National Institute of Fashion Technology – [NIFT], Kolkata Overview

Founded in the year 1986 by the Ministry of Textiles - Government of India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology, Kolkata is an institution of design, fashion, technology and management situated in Salt Lake City, Kolkata, West Bengal.

Spread over an area of three acres the college is one of the 16 NIFT campuses present in the country and has a campus strength of 750. The institute provides various UG, PG and doctoral programmes in Design and Fashion Technology consisting of courses like B.Des, B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, M.Des and PhD.

Admission to these courses is conducted on the basis of an individual’s performance in the National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Examination. NIFT Kolkata offers a total of seven Undergraduate courses, two Postgraduate courses and one Doctoral programme.

NIFT Kolkata Courses offered and Fee Structure

The National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kolkata provides degrees in branches of Design and Fashion Technology. NIFT courses are offered in B.Des, B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech, M.Des and PhD. Following is a brief discussion of NIFT fee structure of the NIFT Kolkata courses.

NIFT Kolkata Course Highlights

• NIFT Kolkata offers a full-time 4-year long Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme for a fee of INR 11.36 lakhs. Aspiring candidates need to clear their senior secondary exam from a recognised board or university with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as compulsory subjects. The courses offered include Leather Design, Fashion Communication, Knitwear Design, Fashion Design, Accessory Design And Textile Design.
• The college also provides a full-time Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) degree in Apparel Production for a period of 4 years along with a fee of INR 11.36 lakhs. Willing candidates need to clear their senior secondary exam from a recognised board or university with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as compulsory subjects.
• NIFT Kolkata courses are offered at the PG level is a two-year-long full-time Master of Design (M.Des) programme for a NIFT Kolkata course fee of INR 5.22 lakhs. Candidates need to have an Undergraduate Diploma for a minimum of three years from NIFT or NID (National Institute of Design) or an undergraduate degree from any recognised university to be eligible for this course. 
• The college also offers a two-year-long full-time Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech) programme for a fee of INR 5.22 lakhs. Aspiring candidates need to have an Undergraduate Diploma for a minimum of three years from NIFT or NID or an Undergraduate degree from any recognised university.
• NIFT Kolkata provides a PhD degree in Design for NIFT Kolkata fees of INR 10.58 Lakhs. The course is completed over a period of five years. Willing candidates need to have a postgraduate degree in the field of Design, Management of Technology with a minimum aggregate of 6.0 CGPA (on a 10 point scale). A minimum of seven years of education after the 10th grade is required to be eligible for this course.

NIFT Kolkata Admission Process

Candidates must meet the NIFT eligibility criteria to be eligible to apply for their preferred courses. Students can collect NIFT admit card from its official website. The NIFT Kolkata admission procedures of 2019 for the various courses are as follows:

• Bachelor of Design (B.Des) Admission -  NIFT Kolkata admission is based on the performance of a candidate in his or her National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Examination. Shortlisted candidates need to sit for another exam known as the Situation Test.
• Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) Admission - Admission is based on the performance of a candidate in the National Institute of Fashion Technology Entrance Examination. Other written exams include the CAT (Creative Ability Test) and the GAT (General Ability Test). Shortlisted candidates need to sit for another exam known as the Situation Test.
• Master of Design (M.Des) Admission - Admission is conducted on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidate in the General Ability Test - GAT (30% weightage) or Creative Ability Test - CAT (50% weightage) followed by his or her performance in Group Discussion or Personal Interview.

NIFT Kolkata Result and Cut-off

Aspiring candidates need to score above a specified percentile, which is decided by the college itself, in their entrance exams to get admitted into their desired streams. NIFT cut off for the UG and PG Level is declared on the basis of the score obtained in the NIFT Entrance Exam.

NIFT Kolkata Scholarships

NIFT Kolkata offers finite assistance to deserving or meritorious students who are in need of financial support as per the norms of the Means-cum-Merit Financial Assistance programme.

Students who are willing to avail this offer should submit an application form along with an annual family income certificate and contact the Student Development Activity Coordinator (SDAC) at their campus after the completion of the required admission procedures.

NIFT scholarship also has another assistantship programme under which it offers means to a student to support his or her academic journey in return for a few hours of employment. The students are given a part-time job within the institute and then paid for their service.

NIFT Kolkata Campus Facility

Following are a few of the facilities available at the NIFT Kolkata campus.

• Library: The National Institute of Fashion Technology at Kolkata has a Resource Centre (RC) consisting of a library wing and a material wing. The Library is stocked with various books covering details and information regarding fashion, garments and technology and has a subscription to fashion journals and forecast. It also keeps a collection of videotapes, slides and CD-ROMs. The Material Wing, on the other hand, is filled with costumes, textiles, accessories and findings. The Textile collection includes a fully documented stack of woven and printed patterns manufactured for apparel and home furnishings. The collection of costumes includes regional costumes of India as well as clothing from famous designers. Findings include a collection of functional materials such as embellishments interfacing, buttons, elastic, zippers, linings and other materials required for completing garments. Lastly, the accessories collection comprises of a variety of bags, belts, costume jewellery and yarn craft.

• Hostels: The college provides lodging facilities to only female students (especially for students of the first year). The hostels are equipped with basic amenities like reading rooms, Wi-Fi connectivity, water purifier, mess, gym etc. The rooms are available on a shared basis for two people and are equipped with provisions like table, cupboard, chair and cots.  

• Sports: NIFT Kolkata has a Tennis and Volleyball court.

• Labs: The laboratories at NIFT Kolkata include a Computer Lab, Patternmaking or draping labs, Construction labs, Flatbed knitting lab, Computerized knitting lab, Weaving lab, Textile testing lab, Cad studio, Jewellery design studio, Leather processing lab and Machine lab.

• Location: The official NIFT Kolkata address is Plot - 3B, Block-LA, Sector-III, Salt Lake City, Kolkata (West Bengal). It is well connected with different parts of West Bengal as well as India by railway and air-routes.
• Other: The college has Audiovisual rooms with LCD projectors. It also provides Banking facility for students and staff.
