NIFT Kannur – National Institute of Fashion Technology Overview

Founded in the year 2008, by the Ministry of Textiles - Government of India, the National Institute of Fashion Technology Kannur is an institution of design, fashion, technology and management situated outside the city of Kannur in Kerala. Spread over an area of 10 acres, the college is one of the 16 NIFT campuses present in the country.

The institute provides various UG and PG programmes in Design and Fashion Technology consisting of courses like B.Des, B.F.Tech, M.F.Tech and M.Des. Admission to these courses is conducted on the basis of performance in entrance exams like General Ability Test (GAT) or Creative Ability Test (CAT). NIFT Kannur offers a total of five Undergraduate and two Postgraduate programmes.

The National Institute of Fashion Technology in Kannur provides degrees in branches of Design and Fashion Technology. It offers NIFT Kannur courses such as Bachelor of Design (B.Des), Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech), Master of Fashion Technology (M.F.Tech) and Master of Design (M.Des). NIFT Kannur Course Highlights

• NIFT Kannur offers a full-time four-year long Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme with a NIFT Kannur fee structure of INR 11.36 lakhs. Aspiring candidates need to clear their senior secondary exam from a recognised board with Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, Biology and English as compulsory subjects. The courses offered include Fashion Communication, Knitwear Design, Fashion Design and Textile Design.
• The college also provides a full-time Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) degree on for a period of four years along with a fee of INR 11.36 lakhs. Willing candidates need to clear their senior secondary exam from a recognised board or university with Physics, Chemistry, Biology and English as compulsory subjects. The course provided under this degree is that of Apparel Production.
• NIFT Kannur provides a two-year-long full-time Master of Design (M.Des) programme in the specialization of Design Space for a fee of INR 4.54 lakhs. Candidates need to have an Undergraduate Diploma for a minimum of three years from NIFT or NID or an Undergraduate degree from any recognised university to be eligible for this course. 
• National Institute of Fashion and Technology, Kannur also offers a two-year-long full-time Master of Fashion Management (MFM) programme for a fee of INR 4.54 lakhs. Aspiring candidates need to have an Undergraduate Diploma for a minimum of three years from NIFT or NID or an Undergraduate degree from any recognised university.

NIFT Kannur Admission Process

NIFT Kannur admission 2019 has already started. The NIFT admission procedures of 2018 for the various courses are as follows:

• Bachelor of Design (B.Des) Admission - NIFT Kannur admission is based on the performance of a candidate in his or her General Ability Test (GAT) or Creative Ability Test (CAT) exam. Shortlisted candidates need to sit for another exam known as the Situation Test.
• Bachelor of Fashion Technology (B.F.Tech) Admission - Admission is based on the performance of a candidate in his or her General Ability Test (GAT) or Creative Ability Test (CAT) exam. Shortlisted candidates need to sit for another exam known as the Situation Test.
• Master of Design (M.Des) Admission - Admission is conducted on the basis of the marks obtained by the candidate in the General Ability Test - GAT (30% weightage) or Creative Ability Test - CAT (40% weightage) followed by his or her performance in Group Discussion or Personal Interview.

NIFT Kannur Result and Cut-off

Aspiring candidates need to score above a specified percentile, which is decided by the college itself, in their entrance exams to get admitted into their desired streams. NIFT Kannur results for the UG and PG Level is declared on the basis of the score obtained in GAT or CAT exams.

NIFT Kannur Alumni Network

The Alumni Association of NIFT is an all-India society registered in Delhi and functions as an independent member-driven community. In terms of membership, the organisation appoints NIFT alumni in the senior positions to administer over retail, manufacturing, apparel and related industries globally, along with some of the youngest graduates of the institute as well.

The association and its members aim to support their alma mater by encouraging mutually advantageous interactions between the former and the present students of the institute, and amongst the members of the Alumni community themselves.

They also make the alumni take a keen interest in the operation and progress of the fashion institute, and offer suggestions to make the education system of the college responsive towards the growing industry needs and advances in technology.​

NIFT Kannur Scholarships

NIFT Kannur offers scholarships or assistantships to its students on a Merit cum Means basis. It provides financial assistance to students whose annual family income is below a certain amount. The scholarships are mostly in the form of tuition fee exemptions.

For undergraduate candidates

• A student is exempted from paying 75% of the tuition fee if his or her annual family income is less than 1.0 lakh.
• A student is exempted from paying 50% of the tuition fee if his or her annual family income is between 1.0 and 2.5 lakhs.
• A student is exempted from paying 25% of the tuition fee if his or her annual family income is between 2.5 and 4.0 lakhs.

For postgraduate candidates

• A student is exempted from paying 50% of the tuition fee if his or her annual family income is less than 1.0 lakh.
• A student is exempted from paying 25% of the tuition fee if his or her annual family income is between 1.0 and 2.5 lakhs.

To apply for the above scholarship schemes a student needs to submit an application along with an annual parental income certificate and get in touch with the Student Development Activity Coordinator (SDAC) at the campus after admission.

NIFT Kannur Campus Facility

Following are a few of the facilities available at the NIFT Kannur campus.

• Library: The National Institute of Fashion Technology at Kannur has a Resource Centre that keeps a rich collection of print and non-print resources to provide academic assistance to the research and teaching programmes at the Institute. It is stocked with modern facilities and provisions in the form of journals, books, promstyl, CD-ROMs etc. The Resource Centre also offers services like online database and Selective Dissemination of Information (SDI) facility.

• Hostels: The college provides lodging facilities to both boys and girls. All the rooms have basic amenities like table, cupboard, chair and cots. The rooms can be availed on a shared basis and hostels are equipped with provisions like gym, mess, indoor and outdoor games e.t.c. The rooms are assigned on a first come first serve basis.  

• Sports: NIFT Kannur has a Tennis Court, Cricket field, Volleyball court and a Basketball ground.

• Labs: The laboratories at NIFT Kannur include a Computer Lab, Weaving Lab, Surface Design Lab, Pattern Making Lab and a Testing Lab.

• Location: The official NIFT Kannur address is Dharmasala, Mangattuparamba, Kannur (Kerala). It is well connected with different parts of Kerala as well as India by railway and air-routes.
