UPSC ESE 2019 Eligibility Criteria

Educational Qualification – Graduation

As far as educational qualifications are concerned, the followings are applicable:

  • The incumbent must have a degree in any branches of engineering from a reputed college or institute with the required percentage of marks.
  • The candidate should have cleared the section A & B from the institutions of engineers of India.
  • Should possess a diploma or degree from any foreign university and the course should be equivalent to a degree of engineering in India.
  • Passed the graduation membership exam from the Institution of Electronics and Telecommunication Engineers of India.
  • Should have passed part I and II of Associate Membership Examination from the Aeronautical Society of India or Institution of Electronics and Radio Engineers, London.

Education criteria by the UPSC IES Examination

  • The candidates who have passed the examination of IES but not received the results of the final exam will be allowed to sit for the interview round if he can furnish the result at the time of the interview.
  • The candidates who have already passed the IES examination but having a degree of engineering from a foreign university which is not recognized or equivalent to Indian education standard, his selection is solely dependent on the interview board only.
  • The candidates who don’t possess any engineering degree but passed the IES exam they can also be allowed but the degree he possesses must be equivalent to an engineering degree.

Age Limits to Appear for the IES Exam

  • Minimum Age Limit: As far as the age limit is concerned, the minimum age that that has been set to appear for the entrance exam is 21 years. This means, that the candidate must be at least 21 years old on January 01of the year this exam is being held. If someone is planning to appear for the exam in 2019, in that case, he/she needs to be at least 21 years by January 01, 2019.
  • Upper Age Limits: As far as the upper age limit is concerned, it is also calculated on January 01of that particular year. There are different maximum age limits that have been fixed for varied categories, which are as follows:
  • General Category: Up to 30 Years
  • OBC Category: 35 years
  • SC and ST: 35 years
  • For defense personnel who got disabled during operation under any hostile situation and got releases, for him the upper age limit has been set to 35 years
  • The upper age limit for deaf-mute, blind, and orthopedically handicapped individuals is 40 years.
  • Those who are already working in any of the government organization on a contractual basis they can also get a relaxation of upper age limit by 3 years. In addition, the employees who are working in government organization they are also entitled to get some upper age limitation.

Medical examination results of IES candidates

Irrespective of the candidates eligibility status or reservation quota everyone candidate has to undergo the medical examination. To do this the candidates have to face a series of different physical tests to prove their fitness. Each and every candidates whether he is giving this examination for the first time or multiple times each time they have to clear this examination. This examination has to be done form the any of the listed railways hospitals. The candidates found to be unfit will be disqualified for the examination. Here is the detailed process of taking the medical examination.

  • The candidates have to visit the scheduled railways hospitals for the examination on the specific dates.
  • All the information relating to venue, dates, and results will be available on indianrailways.gov.in.
  • Candidates need to carry 3 sets of medical reports which can be downloaded from the website given above.
  • The candidates also need to bring one photo ID issued by the government of India and three copies of passport size photo.
  • The candidates who are applied under the PwD category they need to show their disability certificate along with the abovementioned reports and Ids.

How Many Attempts is One Allowed for the IES Entrance Exam?

For a candidate who belongs to the general category, for him, the age limit has been set up to 30 years. However, it does not mean that will be able to appear for an infinite number of times. There are certain restrictions that have been imposed by the authority in terms of how many times he can appear for the exam. The restrictions, however, vary for separate categories and the calculation is based on the assumption that a candidate passed his B.E or B. Tech at the age of 22 years.

  • For General category, one can make 8 attempts till he is 30 years old
  • For the OBC candidates, one can make 11 attempts until he reaches 33 years
  • For the SC/ST candidates, until he is 35 years old, he can attempt for 13 times

It needs to be mentioned in this regard that physically disabled/handicapped individuals who belong to the general category are allowed to make unlimited attempts until he reaches 40 years; which is the age limit that has been laid down by UPSC.
