JEE MAIN 2020: Application Correction, Syllabus, Exam Date

Parents give thumbs up to online mode

The first round of the second phase of JEE Mains 2016 got over at 12.30 pm today. Around 2 lakh students opted for this year's online mode of examination. One of the toughest exams, JEE Mains, does tests not only a student's knowledge but also their parents' patience.

Parents braved the sweltering heat to stay put at the exam centres, waiting for their children as they attempted the JEE Mains exam inside. They were relieved to know that the exams went on well.

Parents gave thumbs up to the online mode. "I supported my child when he expressed his desire to take the online mode of the examination. Being an engineer, I am aware of the merits of this method when compared to the offline exam. I am happy to know that his exam went off well," said Amit Pandey, who had accompanied his child at the centre today.

Anam Sheikh, a homemaker, who had come along with her son, from the slums of Vidyavihar, Mumbai, said, "We come from a modest background. I supported him in his decision to opt for the online mode. We also sourced a second-hand computer for him so that he would practice at home. It comes as a great relief to know that he attempted the paper confidently and may make it this time around."

Some parents were apprehensive initially. "I was tensed when my child decided to take the online mode of exam. He practised a lot in the last few months. In the end, I think it was a good idea. I am relieved till the results are out," said Armaan Shah, another parent at the exam centre in Mumbai.

CBSE conducted the online mode of JEE Mains 2016 with technical support from TCS Ion. Students over the centres have not received any major technical glitch while attempting the exam, though minor issues were reported at some centres, but were resolved within no time. TCS Ion will also generate a personalised analytical report in the coming days.

177 out of 192 students appear on Day 1 of JEE Mains online exam in Kota

The pen-and-paper mode of JEE Mains 2016 exam on April 3, 2016, saw a high turnout in the coaching capital. In complete contrast, only 177 of the total 384 engineering aspirants, who had registered themselves for this mode, appeared for the round one of the JEE Mains Online examination held today. Rest of them are expected to take ittomorrow.

Aspirants in the coaching capital, who took the computer-based test in Kota, said that Mathematics paper was 'lengthy' and 'tough.' Some other aspirants found Physics and some Chemistry relatively easier than Mathematics in the JEE Mains Online examination held today.

Savita Garg, an aspirant who appeared for Paper 1, said, "The Mathematics paper was lengthy and difficult. Overall the examination was neither tough nor easy as compared to JEE offline examination held earlier this week." Another aspirant Himanshu Shekhar said, "Physics was tough, Chemistry was easier while Mathematics part was moderate." Alisha Verma too found Physics difficult. She said, "Mathematics section was lengthy and a time-consuming part."

Maharishi Arvind Group of Colleges in Ranpur, Kota, was the only examination centre in Kota where the online exam for JEE Mains was held. College authorities informed that 177 aspirants out of the total 192 aspirants took the JEE Mains Online Examination in Paper 1 (B.tech/B.E.) and Paper 2 (B.Arch/B. Planning) today. The other cities in Rajasthan where JEE Mains Online examination was held were Jaipur, Jodhpur, Udaipur, Ajmer, and Bikaner. The second phase of JEE mains 2016 online examination will be held tomorrow as well. Isolated centres, satisfied aspirants, mark the end of JEE Main 2016 online exam

Today, April 10, being the last phase of the JEE Main 2016 exam, saw very few aspirants at exam centres. Despite this being the last slot for the JEE Main exam, many centres in Mumbai had only 8-10 students taking the exam today. However, students and parents were satisfied with the question paper and level of difficulty.

Raju Avadhi, one of the aspirants, said, "I thought since we had a whole week extra to study as compared to the offline exam takers, this would be a pretty tough paper. But the exam was much easier than the offline exam held last Sunday." Overall, students found the Maths section tough and lengthy, while environment chemistry was easy and Physics was average. Karan Singh, a student who was taking the exam for the second time, said, " Last year I had opted for the offline mode of exam, which was very time consuming and difficult. The online mode is comparatively easier and less time was spend in marking the answers on the OMR sheets.

However, Ashish Arora, professor at Allen Coaching Intitutes, says, "Students found the online paper easy as they only have to concentrate on one question at a time. They don't get distracted by the visibility of other questions and hence attempt the paper with a single focus."

Students were also worried about some technical issues since some of them were taking an online for the first time. However, Krishna Shah, one of the exam takers today, said, "The exam procedure was very smooth. No problems with computer systems or softwares were encountered. Anand Pathare, a student who took the exam at D.G. Ruparel college in Matunga, Mumbai also appreciated the efficiency of the invigilators and the computer facilities. He said, "There were no technical glitches as such, although we weren't too many students in the class, so there were a lot of spare computer systems to switch to if required."

Only 15-20% of the total JEE aspirants in the country opt for the online mode of JEE Main exam. Started only last year, the online system has raised many apprehensive heads. Students usually trained in the rudimentary technique of taking the offline exam, are wary of attempting the online mode. However, the few students who attempted the online JEE Main this weekend, have more than anything, complained about the solemn adventure.

Dwarkesh Haldankar, a student from IITians PACE, said, "I am probably the only student in PACE who decided to take the online exam. Despite having more time to study, I had no one to discuss my apprehensions about the online exam." Students feel that though they got more time to study for the exam, they somewhere hoped that they had taken the exam last Sunday with their batch-mates. "If I have any confusion regarding the procedure of online exam, I dont have any friend to discuss that with. Coaching centres give you assistance, but it is difficult to get through them for help on the day of the exam." said another aspirant whose batch-mates and friends had taken the JEE Main exam last Sunday.

One of the reasons why students and coaching institutes had decided against the online exam was also because not many opt for it. There are fears among aspirants that if anything went wrong during the exam, redressal for so few aspirant would be tough to get. Since only a handful students from each coaching centre take the online exam, last minute assistance is also difficult to get.

While students say that coaching institutes had giving them thorough explanation about the online procedure, most of them were adviced against opting for it. Professor Amit Gautam, Faculty Head (Chemistry) Vidyamandir Classes, Delhi, said, "Often only two or three sheets are provided for the calculation. Students may fall short of rough sheets unless they use them judiciously." Students also usually take the online exam with a pre-conceived notion that if Physics was yough in the online paper, it would be difficult in the online exam as well.

According to Alankar Zaveri, another aspirant, said, "Students usually opt for the online exam because they get more time to study. Parents also prefer this arrangement as we can chose our own exam slots. But the first time experience of taking such a tough exam is not very great and one needs support from other students going through the same. I don't regret choosing the online mode, but I wished there were more students who had done the same."

The online mode of JEE Main, sure comes with some benefits like having an easier question paper and more time to study, but aspirants say the idea of taking the exam with only 5-10 other students at the centre is also demotivating.

Errors in JEE Mains 2016 paper puzzles aspirants

Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) office released OMR sheets and answer key on April 18, to clear the students' doubts. But it looks like aspirants are more confused after looking at the answer key.

Praveen Tyagi, Managing Director, IITians Pace Mumbai, said, "It is unfortunate that even this year Mains paper had certain errors. JEE authorities should be more careful in making the paper error free."

Tyagi continued, "JEE has no idea how even one question can puzzle a student, and affect the student's overall performance."

Sarthak Jain, an aspirant from Kota, said, "I was confused with one question in Physics. Because my answer was not matching with the given options, I solved it four times and wasted good ten minutes on it."

If any candidate is not satisfied with any of the answer, then he/she can challenge it. For every answer challenged students need to shell out Rs 1,000. Rahul Yogi, Faculty, Allen- Kota, said, "As far as I know, the answer key is fine. I would suggest students to cross-check their answers."

Yogi also added, "In 2015 JEE Mains answer key was revised, but I doubt they will do it again."

Aspirants across the country are getting worried. Some are saying challenging their answers, some are asking for bonus marks, while some are unclear about how much they are scoring. Amit Ahuja, Academic Counsellor, Allen- Kota, said, "There was one problem in Physics, where JEE has taken the nearest number to be the correct answer. I don't think there are any more problems."

JEE Mains was conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education in two modes; offline on April 3, and online on April 9 and 10.

PaGaLGuY has reached out to JEE authorities. We will update the story with their comments when we hear from them.

JEE Mains 2016 results will be declared by 27 April.

No errors in Mains 2016 question paper, say JEE officials

The recently released answer key and OMR sheets of students who took the offline mode of JEE Mains on April 3, 2016, have pointed to a lot of errors in the four sets of question papers. Following this, aspirants are unable to calculate their score in the exam and are quite upset. PaGaLGuY spoke to JEE officials who said that JEE Main 2016 question papers were error free.

JK Yadav, Deputy Secretary, JEE Unit, said, "There was only one question with multiple answers, which we have indicated in the answer key. Apart from that, there are no mistakes in the question paper."

According to the official offline answer key, only question number 8 in set E and H, and question number 9 in set F and G indicate multiple answers.

Yadav continued, "Aspirants who feel that their recorded response is correct, but is shown otherwise in the answer key can challenge it but on or before April 22." The aspirants can log in using their application number on the JEE website to challenge recorded responses by paying a fee Rs 1,000. If the response is correct, JEE will refund the money.

He further added, "We will review the challenges only after April 22. If any of the challenged answers is found correct, we will revise the answer key, and give bonus mark to the candidates."

There were many incorrect questions in JEE Mains 2015 as well, and candidates were awarded bonus marks for the wrong questions even if they had not attempted them.

Coaching institutes specify errors in JEE Mains 2016 paper

PaGaLGuY spoke to JEE authorities yesterday to know if there were any errors in the Mains 2016 question paper. While they said that the Mains 2016 paper was error free, PaGaLGuY is getting inputs from coaching institutes indicating the errors.

For instance, this is what Shishir Mittal, Head of Chemistry Department, Resonance Eduventures, Kota, said, "There were plenty of errors in the question papers. This is the first in that we have prepared a list of ambiguous questions."

Resonance pointed out more than 10 questions in the JEE Mains 2016 offline paper which were either unclear or inaccurate. They also indicated the reason, as to why the questions are incorrect.

Following questions were in Set -F of the JEE Mains 2016 offline paper, conducted on April 3, by the Central Board of Secondary Education.

Part A- Chemistry

Question number 2- Conceptually challengeable question, correct option was (b) & (c) which was not mentioned.

Question number 9- Data Missing (P0 water), question incomplete.

Question number 12- Inconsistent unit volume of solution of H2O2 was not mentioned.

Question number 17- Inconsistent data, two data given in the question contradict themselves.

Question number 22- As per international standards, both (1) and (2) qualify for answer.

Question number 30- Major product is (78%) is that of elimination, which results in formation of a conjugated diene. This produces was not mentioned at all.

Part B- Mathematics

Question number 48- The problem has potential error.

Part C- Physics

Question number 66- Question is not clear because perception of human eye depends on visual angle and interpretation of visual angle can be justified in both ways.

Question number 84 and 89- Two correct options in SCQ question.

Comment below if any of your questions supported any errors or tell us what do you think about the questions mentioned above.

As the confusion over JEE Mains 2016 question paper continues, PaGaLGuY spoke to aspirants to know what their take is on the issue.

Arham Jain, an aspirant from Kota, said "I am challenging four to five questions 17, 57, 79, 81. I had Set G. I went through many answer keys, everyone has a different answer, this has created a lot of confused for me. So, I am challenging only those which I am confident of."

Another aspirant, Anurag from Mumbai said that his teachers have advised him to wait for the official response form CBSE.

To understand how coaching classes are looking at the whole issue, PaGaLGuY spoke to Prof. Trikha, Director, FIITJEE said, "We feel, question 17 in Set F the has two answers. If students have marked either, they should be given marks. After going through questions challenged by students, CBSE announces a final answer key." Asked about his advice to students, Trikha said, "CBSE is an authority, whatever changes they make or don't has to be accepted by the students. Students should wait till the final answer key is released."
