This time the pattern for question paper sets were different from the traditional A,B,C,D sets.

All the Best,

JEE Main 2016 tough for most, straightforward for a few

The JEE Main 2016, that was held saw only a handful of students who found the paper to be smooth sailing. Like it has been  noticed for the last few years, Physics was the toughest, followed by Maths. Most students though found Chemistry to be the easiest section of all.

"I found the physics section extremely tough. I could not even attempt one single question in this section. Instead of attempting the questions and getting them wrong, and losing marks in negative scoring I decided to not attempt. Math was just better. Chemistry was the easiest of all." said Juhi K.

Some students took the risk of attempting all the questions despite the fear of negative marking. "I attempted all the sections. Though I found Math to be tough I didn't skip questions. Chemistry was smooth sailing. I completed it in less than 40 mins. Physics was okay." said Aniket Badhar

It was however not such a gloomy picture for a few. "I hardly had time to revise after my boards. I met with an accident and fractured my leg. But I felt my paper went well. I had a classroom on the ground floor. I found the Chemistry section to be easy, Physics slightly tough and Math the toughest of all." added Soham Gupta, one of the few  who felt their paper went well.

ANALYSIS OF JEE MAIN PAPER 2016

By IIT- ian's PACE Team

Math:-

Jee Main paper 2016 was relatively easy as compared to previous year paper. Though 2 questions are still doubtful and are subjected to one's interpretation.

Chemistry:-

The paper was slightly difficult because many questions were factual & they were from chapters like environmental chemistry etc for which students devote lesser time compared to other chapters. This paper clearly emphasizes thorough study of NCERT text books. In one of the question multiple answers can be there (Code F- 17 Question)

Physics:-

The paper was relatively tough, two questions had more than one answer correct. Quite a few questions were lengthy, one question in optics has lengthy simplification. Over all the paper is tough and conceptual. Greater emphasis was given for 12th STD syllabus

Career Point, Allen Career Institute, Resonance, and Motion IIT Academy faculty analyse JEE Mains 2016 paper, say the cut-off may come down this time

The faculty of different coaching institutes - Career Point, Allen Career Institute, Resonance, and Motion IIT Academy - in Kota have analysed JEE Mains 2016 paper. They were unanimous in their view that Physics paper was lengthy, Chemistry focussed on NCERT syllabus and Mathematics paper tougher than last year. They are expecting the cut-off to come down this time.

Shailendra Maheshwari, Director, Career Point, Kota

The Physics paper was lengthy but comparatively easier than previous years. Some of the questions were repeated from previous year's papers. It had few questions with more than one answer. The Chemistry part was mostly based on NCERT syllabus, but it was low scoring as compared to previous year's papers. The physical and inorganic chemistry sections were same as last year; two questions of physical chemistry contained insufficient and incorrect data. The organic part was difficult. The questions on environmental chemistry required standard data of water pollution, an ignored topic for most students. The Mathematics section was low scoring. Some of the questions were lengthy and challenging while one question from binomial theorem was fundamentally wrong. This section laid equal importance to Class 11 and 12 syllabi. The cut-off marks will be lower than that of the previous year.

RK Verma, Director, Resonance Eduventures, Kota

As expected, JEE Mains 2016 paper followed the same pattern as that of last year. All three subjects were tough with Mathematics taking a lead, followed by Chemistry and Physics.Even though the paper was moderate this time around, the cut-off would still fall as compared to last year because of the increase in the number of seats, from 1,50,000 to 2,00,000.There were a few ambiguous questions, with either more than one answer or not having a correct option altogether, in all the subjects. In Mathematics, one question had two correct options. In Chemistry, three questions were ambiguous. In Physics, two questions had no correct answer from the given choices, and two questions were vague. These questions might be announced as a bonus. In JEE Mains 2016, 40% of questions were based on Class 11 syllabus and the remaining from Class 12 in all three subjects. The expected cut-off for different categories could be as follows: Gen 99, OBC 64, SC 43, ST 37.

Vinod Kumawat, Faculty Member, Allen Career Institute, Kota

Physics paper was lengthy and probably two questions had two correct answers among the four given choices. Chemistry section was comparatively easier, and most of it were based on NCERT syllabus. The Mathematics paper was based on the same pattern as last year, and it was easy.

Nitin Vijay, Motion IIT Academy, Director, Kota

The questions in Chemistry were mostly from NCERT syllabus and factual. The Physics and Chemistry sections followed the same pattern as last year's JEE Mains paper. There were two questions in Mathematics for which students should get bonus marks. The overall paper was tough, so the cut-off is likely to come down this time.

1,099 students appear for Paper 2 in Kota

The most prestigious engineering entrance exam, JEE Mains 2016, in pen-paper mode was conducted in two parts (Paper 1 and Paper 2) on Sunday, 3 April 2016, across the country. While Paper 1 was for those students who were applying only for an engineering course, Paper 2 was for those who were interested in a B.Arch degree.

Around 10,632 aspirants appeared for Paper 1 of JEE Mains at 20 examination centers in the morning shift in Kota today while 1,099 appeared for Paper 2 in the afternoon shift at two examination centers. The two centers were Lawrence and Mayo Public School and Rajasthan Technical University. "Around 1,222 students were expected to write the exam but 170 aspirants skipped it," said, Pradeep Singh Gaur, CBSE Coordinator, Kota, adding, "The examination passed off smoothly."

Heaving a sigh of relief, Pallavi, who wrote the exam, said, "It was definitely easier compared to Paper 1 held in the morning shift. The paper had aptitude test, logical reasoning, drawing and plan as its components. The Mathematics section was relatively difficult in Paper 2 than other components."

Another aspirant Priyanka Rana, who appeared in both the papers today, said, "Paper 2 was easier than Paper 1 but Mathematics section was tough," adding, "The drawing component in the paper focused on bringing out the creativity of the aspirant."

Academic Counselor Amit Ahuja said that Paper 2 has few takers and not many take the exam.

FIITJEE Director analyses JEE Mains Paper 1

The Paper 1 for B.E. / B.Tech courses in JEE Mains 2016 followed the same pattern as that of the last four years, from 2011 to 2015. A few questions in Physics were tricky. As compared to last year, this section was tough. One question (Q. 84 in Set F) had two answers. One or two questions in Chemistry were challenging too. It was difficult compared to last year. A question (Q 17 in Set F) appeared to have no matching answer in the choices given. A few questions in Mathematics were lengthy. The difficulty level for the paper was moderate. For a student who has been focused and paid ample attention to improving speed and accuracy by taking mock tests on JEE Mains pattern must have done reasonably well. It is always relative performance that matters in such highly competitive examinations. As far as errors and ambiguities are concerned, I will be able to comment only after solving the entire paper. The cut-offs are expected to be little higher this time around. Top 2,00,000 candidates of JEE Main will be eligible to appear in JEE Advanced on May 23, 2016, to slug it out to secure a seat out of 10,000 seats in the IITs/ISM Dhanbad.

Alphabetical confusion in JEE Mains 2016 question paper

Approximately 15 lakh students took the offline mode of JEE Mains 2016 on April 3, 2016. This qualifying examination for engineering colleges has four different sets of questions papers. As aspirants were waiting for the clock to struck 9:30 a.m with a hope to get easiest of the Sets (A, B, C or D) but they were given Sets E, F, G and H.

Coaching institutes who were waiting to solve the question papers had a similar epiphany. Where is Set A. A JEE faculty from Allen, Kota,  said, "I was waiting to solve the Set C, but instead got set G."

JEE Mains is conducted by the Central Board of Secondary Education. JK Yadav, Deputy Secretary, JEE office, said, "We change the alphabets every year to avoid a set pattern. We choose random alphabets, like L,M,N,O or W, X, Y, Z."

Whatever the Sets pattern was, JEE Mains was conducted successfully on April 3, 2016. Now, aspirants are waiting for the online JEE Mains which will be conducted on April 9 and 10, 2016.

IITs, IIMs bag top ranks in MHRD survey

The Indian Institutes of Technologies and Indian Institutes of Managements lead the league tables for engineering and management occupying top positions in India's first ever domestic educational ranking list released by the Ministry of Human Resource Development in New Delhi on Monday.

The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF), a body constituted by the HRD ministry last year surveyed more than 230 universities and 3,500 educational institutes across the country. While the Indian Institute of Technology, Madras bagged the top position in the NIRF ranking in engineering category, IIT Bombay and IIT Kharagpur stood at the second and third position respectively.

The institutions were ranked on five basic criteria -- teaching, learning & resources, research, professional practice & collaborative performance, graduation outcomes, outreach and perception. An independent agency, the National Bureau of Accreditation, validated the data submitted by the institutes. The first four parameters accounted for 90% of weightage. For the perception criterion, feedback was taken from various stakeholders, including parents, teachers and alumni.

While the IIT-Madras scored 89.42%, IIT-Bombay scored 87.67% and IIT Kharagpur scored 83.91%. While IIT Madras got the highest ranking in the graduation outcome parameter, IIT Bombay got it in outreach and perception and IIT Kharagpur got it in teaching, learning and research.

The IITs from Delhi, Kanpur, Roorkee, Hyderabad, Gandhinagar, Ropar, Patna and Guwahati scored in the range of 74% to 82%. The IIT Guwahati missed the distinction mark by a whisker with a score of 74.63%. The IIT Hyderabad emerged as a rising star as it secured the seventh position. Prof UB Desai, director of IIT-Hyderabad, which was ranked seventh among various teaching and research institutes said - "We are pleased to receive this award from the HRD Ministry. We have been ranked 7th, which is the highest among all new IITs. It is really an honour to be recognized and awarded for the work being done at the institute. We certainly would like to do better and rank higher up in the coming years." The IIT Jodhpur got the lowest rank of 25 with a score of 67.68%.

In the management category, the first six ranks were occupied by IIMs led by IIM Bangalore at 1st rank with a weighted score of 93.04%. Following the lead was IIM Ahmedabad on rank 2, IIM Calcutta on rank 3, IIM Lucknow on rank 4 with weighted scores of 89.92%, 87.45% and 86.13% respectively. Meanwhile, IIM Udaipur and IIM Kozhikode stood at the fifth and sixth positions with weighted score of 84.23% and 81.97% respectively.

The IIM Bengaluru obtained highest score in the perception criteria whereas IIM Ahmedabad and Calcutta got the highest score in teaching, learning and research.

The IIMs which received lower than distinction scores were IIM Raipur at 18th rank with a score of 72.42%, IIM Rohtak at 19th rank with a score of 72.37% and IIM Kashipur with a score of 70.11%.

Advantages of taking JEE online

Are you a JEE aspirant, slogging for more than just getting into an IIT, well then you must have applied for various other entrance examinations. The National Defence Academy written Examination is one such entrance which gives entry to the prestigious joint services Academy of the Indian Armed Forces. The number of students applying for NDA exam has been rising over the time. Over 2,50,000 class 12th, students will be taking this year's NDA Exam on April 17, 2016. The majority of the students who have applied for NDA exam also took this year's JEE mains exam.

Students preparing for JEE 2016, who have also applied for NDA will certainly be better positioned on April 17 while attempting the NDA exam. The Following are the reasons that will benefit a JEE aspirant while attempting NDA (i) 2016.

1) Students from 12th Science background have the opportunity to qualify any of the three designated branches in NDA. That is the Army, Navy, and the Airforce. On the other hand, students from other streams apart from science can only opt for Army division of NDA.

2) The current paper pattern,

There are two objective type paper for NDA exam. Mathematics and General Ability Test.

Advantages of taking JEE Mains 2016 online

Online mode of Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for engineering will be conducted on April 9 and 10, 2016 by the Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE). With only three days left for the exam, PaGaLGuY spoke to experts to get you some tips on how to use this online facility to your advantage.

Amit Ahuja, Allen- Kota

Countdown timer- The countdown timer in the top right corner of screen, will help you in analysing how much time you need to devote to the remaining questions.

Multiple language- You can view any question in either Hindi or English. You can also switch from English to Hindi or Hindi to English, at any point in the exam.

Question palette- Make use of the color coding options given by the CBSE. The color coding facility will help students in getting a tentative idea about the questions. There are five options available in the question palette.

Ashish Gupta, Bansal Classes- Jaipur

Change your answer- Since students can easily change their answers in online mode, there are chances of them getting easily confused. They should not get unnecessarily worried about this and be confident of their answers.

When the timer reaches zero, the examination will end by itself. Students should not be worried about saving or submitting the examination. Approximately 13 lakh students took the offline mode of JEE Mains on April 3 and about 1.5 lakh students are expected to take the online mode this weekend on April 9 and 10.

Online mode better than pen-and-paper exam, say first-year engineering students

Last year, JEE Mains introduced the online mode of examination for the sake of aspirants' convenience. However, numbers reveal that the pen-and-paper method is more popular among engineering aspirants as only 15-20% of the total students appearing for JEE in the country prefer to take the online exams. With barely two days left for the JEE Mains online exam that is scheduled to be held over the weekend, PaGaLGuY team spoke with a couple of first-year engineering students to get a rundown of the two modes for the benefit of JEE Mains aspirants.

Inputs have been given by the following students about their experiences in the JEE Main 2015 online exam.

Rahul Raj, IIT Kgp

Gunreet Kaur, NIT Jalandar

Renish Khimani, SVNIT

Rajat Harlalka, IIT Guwahati

Anshul Jain, IIT Delhi

Sabyasachi Basu, IISc Bengaluru

Prabuddh Baiid, IIT Delhi

Kabir Chhabra, IIT Delhi

Use calculation sheets judiciously for JEE Mains 2016 online test

The JEE Main 2016 computer based test will be held over the coming weekend ( April 9 and 10, 2016). It was observed when JEE Mains went online last year, that students fell short of the rough sheets provided to them for solving answers.

Students are provided with two blank sheets for calculations. "Students had mentioned last year that, the sheets provided were less. However, that is the case because many at times they don't realize that they need to solve many more sums than the questions they are attempting. This  then, causes them to use a lot of space of the rough sheets right at the beginning of the exam, and later fall short of space as they go ahead." said Prof. Alok Gautam, Vidyamandir Classes, New Delhi.

Also, when a student gets a particular problem wrong in the first attempt, they tend to repeat the same question. "I would suggest to students to  avoid that mistake. If they don't arrive at the solution in the first attempt, it's best to mark that question for review and move to the next one. If time and space permits then, go back to solving the same question.' said Ajay D, a student who took his exam last year from a centre in Mumbai.

A CBSE official who PaGaLGuY spoke to said that, it is quite trivial, because the sheets are enough for the number of questions that needs to be solved. 'Instead of wasting space, divide the rough sheet into two or three sections and then start calculations. It will keep the calculations organized and also avoid wasting space.' he said.
