JEE MAIN 2020: Application Correction, Syllabus, Exam Date

JEE Mains 2016: Aspirants uncertain after release of OMR sheet, answer key

The four sets of answer keys of JEE Mains 2016 released by the authorities is confusions' galore. The aspirants who took the pen and paper based exam are anxiously waiting for the revised answer key. They are not even sure if they will make the cut for JEE Advanced 2016. Those who were hopeful earlier told PaGaLGuY that they were unable to do well because of the wrong questions in the paper. Some students spent a lot of time on attempting the wrong questions while some felt disheartened after being unable to solve it satisfactorily.

PaGaLGuY spoke to some aspirants about their responses in JEE Mains 2016 paper. Varun from Jaipur, said, "According to the instruction number seven in the question booklet, there can be only one correct answer. But question number 30 of Set E, had multiple answers. I immediately identified the correct responses, still spent around 10 minutes on it."

He added, "I missed five to six questions in the paper because of that question. I request the Board to give bonus marks for this question."

Varun has challenged 11 answers and is anxiously waiting for the revised answer key. Another aspirant from Jaipur, Mansi, said, "The answer for question number 50 in Set E, challenges NCERT textbooks. By not specifying the standards, the question asked in the paper, is incomplete." Some aspirants even felt a little demotivated because they were unable to solve some questions.

The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) conducts the Mains paper with the help of JEE Unit. The parents are also a troubled lot and wondering as to how the Board could set a paper with multiple errors. They feel that the quality of JEE Mains paper was not up to the mark this time around. Varun's father, Vishal, said, "JEE unit has enough funds to set an error-free paper, but I don't know what stops them," adding, "Even while challenging an answer, they don't give 'none of the above' option. Nor do they give space to provide a solution as to why one thinks that the challenged answer is correct."

Aspirants told PaGaLGuY that they were sure that some questions in the paper are incorrect and are hoping JEE will consider their request. Vishal further added, "Science can't be understood without questioning. How will JEE know why did we challenge a particular question without even giving a chance to explain the solution."

The result of JEE Mains 2016 will be declared on April 27.

JEE Mains 2016: Bonus marks for ambiguous questions only hope for many aspirants

The wait will soon be over for lakhs of engineering aspirants who took the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains in the offline and online mode held on April 3, 9 and 10 this year. The Central Board of Secondary Examination (CBSE), authorities which conducted the exam, will announce the result on April 27, 2016. The top two lakh JEE aspirants will be selected for JEE Advanced. The all-India merit list will be declared on June 30, 2016.

With just a day to go, some aspirants seemed tensed while others were relaxed. The recently released OMR sheets and answer keys have given most of them a fair idea of how they have fared in the exam. The ambiguity expressed by CBSE officials over the alleged wrong questions and the possible bonus marks are the only thoughts that have given some hope to the aspirants and their parents.

"I am not tensed for the results as I have a comfortable score of 275 according to the JEE Mains official answer key. I started my revision for JEE Advanced immediately after my Mains. However, I have bookmarked the JEE website, and I am eagerly waiting for the results," said Sanket Choudhary.

Another JEE aspirant Ashilesh Ingale, said, "I am nervous. I have a score of 98 according to the official answer key. I was expecting a score of at least 140. As of now, I am relying on the probable bonus marks. I have challenged two questions."

The parents are an anxious lot as well. "We are satisfied with her performance, and we know that she will make the cut, but I am a little worried considering the fate of the challenged answers because that will have a tremendous impact on the merit list," said Preeti Thakkar, mother of an aspirant.

Those who clear JEE Mains will qualify for JEE Advanced scheduled to be held on May 22, 2016. The registrations for JEE Advanced will begin from April 29 and end on May 4.

Kota institutes hope to maintain winning streak in JEE Mains 2016

The result of JEE Mains 2016 will be declared on Wednesday and the coaching institutes in Kota are hopeful of repeating their stupendous feat this year around as well.

The small town in Rajasthan has 150-200 odd coaching centres which are known for churning out IITians year on year. Most institutes here believe that they will outperform themselves tomorrow.

Nitin Vijay, Director, Motion IIT Academy, Kota, appeared confident that this year more students from his institute will clear JEE Mains. When asked about the logic behind his assertion, he said, "Students and institutes work hard all through the year. Their diligence will reap rich rewards tomorrow." Shailendra Maheshwari, Director of Career Point Institute, said that it was difficult to predict the exact number of selections but he was hopeful that his institute and Kota would better its score in JEE Mains 2016.

The coaching institutes were of the unanimous view that the cut-off can see a drop this year around. "JEE Mains examination was tougher than last year as it was more conceptual, so students took more time in finishing the paper. The cut-offs will come down this time. There were some ambiguities in the paper and it was confused students," said RK Verma, Managing Director of Resonance.

The aspirants in the coaching city had mixed feelings. While some aspirants were relaxed, others seemed anxious and worried. The recently released answer keys and OMR sheets had added to their woes. Deepak Sharma from Uttar Pradesh said that he is expecting around 238 marks as per the answer key and has started JEE Advanced preparation. Another aspirant Mrityunjay Kumar Yadav revealed that he is qualifying after tallying marks of JEE Mains with the answer key so there is no excitement about tomorrow's results. However, Pooja Kumari said that she is scoring marks which are marginally above expected cut off marks so she was a bit anxious.

Bansal Classes puts its student on billboard, claims he will top JEE Mains

It seldom happens that a coaching institute goes over the top to market itself but for Bansal Classes in Kota, this exception is a rule. If last year, they put up billboards across the coaching capital announcing one of its student Satwat Jagwani as All India Topper of JEE Advanced 2015 much before the result was out. He eventually topped the exam and scored full marks in Physics section of the paper.

Taking a cue from last year, the coaching institute has put up billboards around the town to announce how Mankaran Singh, a student from its current batch of engineering aspirants, is all set to ace JEE Mains 2016 by scoring full marks in the Mathematics section of the paper. The advertisement also has a picture of last year's JEE Advanced topper to add credence to its claims.

It is a smart marketing strategy to attract prospective students, who are camping in the town to zero in on the coaching institute, in the ongoing admission season.

Bansal Classes, however, refused to label it as an attention-grabbing marketing move. "Kota has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the past few months. It is a small step to instil positivity among the students. We want to reaffirm their faith in coaching institutes here and tell them that all said and done, we are doing whatever it takes to get you into the engineering institute of your choice," said AK Tiwari, Administrative Head of Bansal Classes, Kota.

When asked why did they go all the way to announce Mankaran as the top scorer in Mathematics just a day before the results are to be declared, he said, "Mankaran is a brilliant student of their institute. He approached us after matching his score with the answer key of JEE Mains and found to have scored full marks in Mathematics subject. It is an incredible feat, and we want to highlight it."

The other institutes, however, have refrained from making such tall claims. They are waiting for the results to be declared tomorrow.
