JoSAA 2016: What does Freeze, Float, and Slide option mean?

With the release of JoSAA's first round seat allotment list, the seat acceptance process for engineering colleges through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) Main and Advanced has begun.

Students should note that if the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has allotted them a seat, they must report at the nearest reporting centre to acknowledge the seat. If they fail to do so, JoSAA will not consider them in subsequent rounds of seat allotment.

A candidate can either retain the seat or opt for a change as per his/her preferences. The three available options to do so are Freeze, Float, and Slide.

Freeze - Candidate is content with the allocated seat and pays the seat acceptance fee. This candidate is not interested in participating in further rounds of seat allotment and hence will not be considered in subsequent rounds.

Float - Candidate accepts the allocated seat, but will wait if a better seat (in any institute) of his/her preference is offered in subsequent rounds. If not, the candidate can always go back to the previously allotted seat.

Slide - Candidate accepts the seat but will wait if a better branch (in the same institute) of his/her preference is offered in subsequent rounds. If not, the candidate can always go back to the previously allotted seat.

JoSAA 2016: Mandatory documents required for admissions at IITs, NITs, IIITs

Students allocated a seat by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) have to follow certain rules and carry some important documents. The two most important things to keep in mind are: pay the seat acceptance fee through SBI Net Banking, or e-Challan, and visit a Reporting Centre (RC) with the required documents.

The seat acceptance fee for General category students is Rs 45,000, and for other category students is Rs 20,000.

Candidates have to report at any of the designated Reporting Centres to acknowledge the allocated seat. If they fail to do so, JoSAA will not consider them in subsequent seat allotment rounds.

While downloading the seat allotment letter, candidates can book an appointment, mentioning their date of visit and time, at their choice of RC. If they don't have an appointment, they might have to wait for an uncertain duration of time, for their chance to come. RCs will give preference to candidates who have an appointment, but this doesn't mean your seat will be allocated to someone else, it just means that you might have to for more time than others. Candidates can book only one appointment throughout the seat allocation process. If a candidate wants to modify the booked appointment, he/she should do it up to two hours prior to the slot booked, and booking is allowed up to two hours prior to the slot of the desired hour. If a candidate arrives more than 20 minutes later than the scheduled appointment, then he/she will be considered on par with those without an appointment. Each RC will have a separate counter for students who do not have an appointment.

Students should carry the required original documents to RC for verification.

JoSAA 2016: Spot verification and detailed instructions make Day 1 of reporting at ARC IIT Bombay hassle-free

The first day of document verification in IIT Bombay saw a relatively low turnout of students. The IITB centre had multiple verification counters, but a crowd that could be handled by a couple of counters only. Students have been given one week to report at the ARC (Admission Reporting Centre) for verification. JoSAA has also released a list of documents required to be submitted at the ARC. Thus students have been given adequate time and instructions to accumulate their documents and free up their schedule. Students at IIT Bombay said that the procedure for verification was hassle-free due to detailed instructions uploaded on the website.

While selecting their choice online (freeze/float/slide), students were asked to confirm a date and time for reporting at the ARC. However, the ARCs had kept some amount of flexibility in those terms, as students who couldn't make it at the scheduled time were still allowed to continue their verification without any issues. In fact, Brijesh Sharma, a student reporting at IIT Bombay, said, "We turned up at the ARC without any appointment for verification, but were allowed to stay and complete the process." Students were facilitated with spot verification, which means that they could report at the ARC without an appointment, taken a token number and get their documents verified on the same day. The verification authorities at IITB say that the provision is made for students who miss out on their appointments due to genuine reasons. However, priority would be given to those who had confirmed their appointment before reporting.

The only inconvenience for students has been the limited number of ARCs across the country. At IIT Bombay, there were students from Kolhapur and Nashik as well, since this is the only IIT in the state. In fact, students from Bengaluru would also have to come down to Mumbai or Chennai for verification as IIT Dharwad is not an ARC.

Beyond this, the verification procedure is running smooth and quick on Day 1 of reporting at ARCs.

For further queries, students can leave their questions in the comments section, and we will get back with an answer as soon as possible.

IIT to hold entrance test in SAARC nations; excluding Pakistan

MHRD will conduct Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) in SAARC nations, for admissions to the prestigious Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs). However, JEE will not be conducted in Pakistan despite being a member of the SAARC fraternity. The decision was taken by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in consultation with the External Affairs Ministry of India.

The conclusion to not conduct JEE in Pakistan in 2017, comes after considering various factors, especially difficulties involved with regard to students procuring visas.

Apart from SAARC nations, JEE will also be conducted in Singapore, UAE and may be in South Africa. The number of seats to be allotted in 2017, for foreign nationals will be supernumerary. The fee applicable in the case of foreign students will also be more as the subsidised fee which Indians pay would not be applicable to them.

Foreign students will be selected through a common entrance exam which would be administered by the IIT with the help of Indian missions in these countries. It will be a pen and paper based entrance exam with same marking structure

The first round of seat allocation for IITs conducted by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) will come to an end on July 5, 2016.

The second round of seat allocations will be declared on July 6 at 5 pm. The schedule and procedure to accept seats will be the same as in round one. Candidates will have to approach respective reporting centres between July 7 to July 9 to claim seats allocated to them.

JoSAA 2016: seat allocation to continue till all seats are filled

The first round of seat allocation conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) for admission to IITs and NITs will come to an end today, July 5, at 5 pm. None of the 10,575 seats in IITs made available for admission this year are vacant according to JoSAA.

Prof K V Krishna, Chairman, JEE Advanced 2016 said, "new vacancy will be created if seats which were allocated in the first round are not claimed by candidates by today evening." Krishna added, "The process of seat allocation will continue till all seats in NITs are also filled."

Unlike last year, admission to IITs and NITs for this academic year is being carried out by a single body, JoSAA.

JoSAA: Second round counselling tomorrow. No spot-rounds this year

Only 72 seats in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs) are available for the second round of counselling. The list for this round shall be declared at 5 p.m. on July 6, 2016. Students who had opted for 'float' or 'slide', the new option will also be allocated in this round.

If a student has accepted a seat of an IIT in the previous round, and if the seat is upgraded to ISM Dhanbad or any other IIT, then the student doesn't have to report to a Reporting Centre (RC) again. It is similar for an upgraded NIT seat as well.

If, however, a student has accepted a seat in an NIT in the previous round and the seat is now upgraded to an IIT, then they will have to report at an RC of IITs and accept the seat. Students who fail to do so will lose both seats.

JoSAA has declared that there will be no spot-rounds this year.
