Home state seats vacant in NITs, increase after second round seat allocation

The number of vacant seats in National Institutes of Technology (NITs) during the ongoing process of seat allocation being carried out by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has seen an increase. JoSAA in an earlier release said that after the first round about 78 seats in NITs- Jalandhar, Mizoram, Sikkim, Calicut, and Nagaland were reported vacant. A seat is declared vacant if a candidate who has been allocated the seat does not report to accept it.

The number of vacant seats has now increased to 136 after the second round. NIT Agartala and Puducherry have also featured in the list. It is interesting to note that all vacant seats are from the 'Home State' category. 'Home state' of a candidate is defined as the state from which he/she has passed Class 12 (or equivalent) examination.

JoSAA 2016: SBI branches near reporting centres may stay open on holidays

The second round list of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA)  was announced on July 6, 2016. Those candidates who have been allotted seats for the first time this round must report to the respective reporting centres and accept the seats. The SBI branches near some of the RCs will remain open on and 9th July 2016.

Despite the days being declared as holidays on account of Id and banks taking the 2nd and 4th Saturday of the month off, the State Bank of India branches near the RCs will remain open to accommodate the payment schedule of students. "Students are requested to check with SBI, so that they don't face any inconvenience. Though the bank branches are likely to remain open during the 3 days of seat acceptance, it will still be safe to check and plan their reporting." said K V Krishna.

There are no other alternatives in case a student fails to report to the centre.

Take a preparatory course at IITs than a drop year

Approximately 185 category students enrolled for a preparatory course at 19 IITs in the year 2015.

What is a Preparatory course?

It is structured to prepare students to pursue the academic programme to which they wish to been allocated at respective IITs.  This one year long course is done on the basis of relaxed admission criteria. Students are taught Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics, and English for two semesters. At the end of the course, candidates are declared as 'Pass' or 'Fail'.

Who can join this course?

Students belonging to Schedule Caste (SC), Schedule Tribe (ST), and Persons with Disabilities (PwD), category can join the course. Candidates will be allocated in this course on the basis of their JEE Advanced ranks.

Also admission is given to the candidates in the preparatory course provided (i) the seats reserved for the respective category are vacant, (ii) candidates satisfy minimum norms, and (iii) candidates have not undergone the preparatory course earlier.

What is the reason behind this course?

When seats reserved for Scheduled Caste, Schedule Tribe and Persons with Disabilities, remain vacant, it is allotted to candidates of respective categories for admission to a preparatory course. On successful completion of the course, students will be offered direct admission in July 2017 (Academic Year 2017-18). They will secure a direct seat at IITs from first year, without taking JEE again.

Who conducts this course?

All the IITs and ISM will run preparatory courses of one year duration for SC, ST and PwD candidates.

How to apply?

The process will be declared once the Joint Seat Allocation process is over.

JoSAA 2016: Number of vacant seats increased to 156 in round three

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) released the third round allotment list on July 10. With the seat acceptance process from July 11 to 13, only those candidates must visit a reporting centre who are allotted seats for the first time in round three or those who have to dual reporting.

As per the seat allotment statistics there are no vacant seats at IITs and ISM, but there are 156 Home State quota seats vacant in NITs. Most of these seats are vacant since round one was over on July 5. There are over 75 seats vacant at NIT Mizoram, Nagaland, and Sikkim since round one. Chances are that students did not select a particular branch's seat at the above mentioned NITs while locking their choices.

Since students cannot change or add more options to their preference list now, these seats continue to remain vacant even in round three.

JoSAA 2016: 'Home State Quota' cause of vacant seats at NITs

A total of 156 seats remain vacant in the National Institute Technology (NITs) after the third round of seat allocation process conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2016. The majority of vacant seats are from the NITs across the North Eastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Agartala.

"We have proposed to the concerned officials of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), to amend the admission process in order to fill the vacant seats of the NITs. If amended, the vacant seats will be filled during the sixth round of seat allocation," said Asok De, Chairman, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) 2016.

Half of all these seats at each NIT come under a 'home state quota' and are filled according to the reservation policy of the state where the institute is located. The remaining half come under the national quota and are filled in keeping with the national reservation policy of 15 per cent for the Scheduled Castes, 7.5 per cent for the Scheduled Tribes and 27 per cent for the Other Backward Classes

The decision to amend the current admission process is yet to be affirmed by the MHRD. If confirmed, these vacant seats will be allotted only to the students domiciled in the North Eastern states of India, and will not be allotted to students from other states. Said Asok De.

After last year's seat allocation process, around 192 seats had remained vacant in NITs across the nation.

Mandatory vaccination for admission to IIT Bombay

The JoSAA 2016 website has displayed registration and lecture commencement schedules for IITs where majority seats have been filled. IITs have uploaded PDFs containing regulations, fee structure and requirements for admission to the institute.

IIT Bombay (IITB), in its instructional document has mentioned a very specific clause, that no other IIT has included in its instructions. Students securing admission to IITB have to get themselves vaccinated against Typhoid, Hepatitis A and B, MMR and Chickenpox. Admission/registration formalities to the institute will be stalled until certificates of vaccination are submitted to the IITB hospital.

Shubham Goyal, a final year student in IITB, said, "Students are advised to get vaccinated before joining the institute, but if they don't, the institute hospital has facilities to do so at a subsidised rate. In any case, taking the shots is a part of the admission process."

But what about students who have already been vaccinated in childhood for Hepatitis, Typhoid, MMR and Chicken Pox? Do they have repeat the vaccination? As per IIT Bombay rules, the student should be recently vaccinated. Another student of IIT Bombay, Shrey Goyal, says, "Chicken Pox and MMR vaccinations should ideally be taken at least once every year, as the effect of the vaccine doesn't last for more than a year."

According to the IITB hospital staff, this rule has been there since five to six years. When students shift to Mumbai from other cities, try to adjust to the food and lifestyle here, their immunity gets compromised. While no other IIT compels students for vaccination, IIT Bombay claims it is for the safety of students as the institute receives crowds from remote cities/villages in the country.

JEE Advanced 2016: IIT Gandhinagar's offer letter to new entrants

Registration process of the new entrants at the Indian Institute of Technology Gandhinagar (IIT-Gn) is scheduled to be held on Thursday, July 21, 2016. Students must reach the institute by 2 p.m. on Thursday to complete the process. If a student fails to report for registration by 6 p.m. on July 21, it will be presumed that the candidate is not interested to take admission at IIT-Gn.

In the offer letter, other than the details related to registration and fee submission, IIT-Gn also notified students about their four month long mandatory Foundation Programme. It is a learning programme structured around five themes; value and ethics, creativity, teamwork, social awareness, and physical activities and sports.

IIT-Gn has asked the new entrants to carry their games and sports kit which includes sports shoes, track suit, shorts, as they will undergo rigorous physical exercise. Students are also advised to carry a traditional or regional attire for a cultural festival at the end of the Foundation programme. Students can bring along the choice of their musical instruments that might be required while performing at the cultural festival.

No students will be permitted to take leave during the Foundation programme for any purpose whatsoever. IIT-Gn authorities will be firm if a student is absent from any part of the programme, which may result into failing the course.

IIT Kharagpur and Roorkee to provide shuttle service for new entrants

Of all the IITs and ISM, only IIT Kharagpur (IIT-Kgp) and IIT Roorkee (IIT-R) will provide transportation facility to the new entrants from city's railway station and bus stand to the institute.

Date of Reporting for both, IIT-Kgp, and IIT-R is July 21, 2016, and both the institutes will provide transportation from July 20. The buses will be available every hour from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. on July 20, and from 8 a.m. to noon, on July 21. "Since there are no local buses between the institute and railway station, we will provide the transport for easy, hassle-free commute," said an official from the Student Affairs' department at IIT-Kgp.

The JEE Advanced Unit released the admission schedule for Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and Indian School of Mines (ISM), on July 12, 2016, it is for candidates who have accepted seats at IITs and ISM, for the 2016-2017 academic year.

In the schedule displayed on the official portal of JEE Advanced, students can look for details like date of reporting for finishing the admission documentation process, allocation of hostels, date of commencement of classes, fee details etc.

JoSAA 2016: IIT-Kanpur notifies students about various scholarships

The recent IIT fee hike from Rs 90,000 to Rs 2,00,000 had definitely raised a lot of eyebrows. Here is your chance to shoulder the burden of your hefty tuition fees for a degree in an IIT. And it will be shared by none other than the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development, and the Institute itself. In the recent Joining Instructions released by various IITs on the official website of Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2016, IIT Kanpur has notified the incoming students about various scholarships that they can avail of at their institute.

"Every year, a large number of scholarships are offered to the students by the institute. About 40% of undergraduate students of the institute avail of scholarships like the Merit-cum-Means scholarship given by the Alumni of IIT Kanpur, Sports scholarship, Benevolence fund, etc." said an official of IIT Kanpur.

One scholarship that has the most benefits and which can be availed of in every IIT and NIT is the Merit-cum-Mean scholarship.

Under the Merit-cum-Means Scholarships for Undergraduate students, students can avail the following benefits:

  • Students receive full tuition waiver, and pocket allowance of Rs 1000 per month for the duration of the program.
  • This is a merit-based scholarship, hence, the recipients must maintain a minimum CPI of 6.5.
  • If CPI falls below 6.5 (but remains above 6.0) then the pocket allowance is withdrawn.
  • Normally, parents annual income should be within certain limits (currently, Rs 6.0 Lakhs).
  • For undergraduates (B.Tech, BS, Major-Minor, Major-Major M.Sc.(2 years), M.Sc.-Ph.D. (UG Part) In an IIT/NIT/IIIT/GFTIs, students are given the facility to benefit from more than one scholarship at a time. All students will be notified about the scholarships by their respective institutes.

JoSAA 2016: 175 seats vacant after fourth round of allocation

A total of 175 seats remain vacant in the National Institute of Technology (NITs) after the fourth round of seat allocation were released today by Joint Seat Allocation Authority 2016 (JoSAA). The number of vacant seats has increased from 156 to 175 since the third round of allocation was released.

Around 173 seats are vacant from the 'Home State Quota', while 2 are All India seats. National Institute of Technology - Nagaland, tops the list with 53 vacant seats across various courses. NIT Mizoram trails with 42 vacant seats. Electrical and Electronics engineering remain the least popular choice with 70 vacant seats in NITs.

Earlier this week, JoSAA had proposed that the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) alter the current allocation process in order to fill the vacant seats. The decision to withdraw the home state quota is yet to receive the MHRD's nod.

"If confirmed, these vacant seats will be allotted in the sixth round of seat allocation. These seats will only be allotted to the students domiciled in the North Eastern states of India, and will not be allotted to students from other states," said Asok De, Chairman, Central Seat Allocation Board.

JoSAA released the results for the fourth round of seat allocation at 2 p.m on July 14, 2016. Candidates who had opted for float and slide option in the third round or candidates who have not been allotted a seat can check their result at josaa.nic.in by filling up your JEE Main 2016 roll no and password.

Candidates who have secured a seat for the first time in the fourth round and those who have to do dual reporting can visit a reporting centre (RC) to accept the seats from July 15 to July 16, 2016 from 10:00 a.m to 5:00 p.m.

JoSAA

When the allotted seats are more than the intake capacity for a particular academic programme, extra seats are called supernumerary seats.

JoSAA has allotted six supernumerary seats so far, two in Computer Science and Engineering branch at the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Mumbai and IIT Delhi each, one in Mathematics and Computing at IIT Kharagpur and one in Chemical Engineering at IIT Patna.

"As per the rules if there are multiple candidates with the same rank, and if they are competing for the last seat of a particular academic programme, then all such candidates are given equal preference. Thus, a supernumerary seat is created," said Prof KV Krishna, Chairman, JEE Advanced 2016.

Also seats allocated to foreign tag candidates can be supernumerary. According to the business rules released on the official JoSAA portal, number of supernumerary seats allotted in each course to foreign candidates is limited to 10% of the total number of seats of the course.

MHT-CET 2016: Aspirant's denied admission after DTE's error

In a recent declaration, the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE), Maharashtra has decided to scrap the admissions to the engineering courses for students who had not taken the Maharashtra Common Entrance Exam (MHT-CET) 2016 and had got admission on the basis of JEE Main 2016. DTE has informed this to all the students who were allotted seats in Centralised Admission Process (CAP) Round 1 on the basis of their JEE Main 2016 marks.

"It was an error from the CAP's side. We are now awarding seats according to the State Government's directives. Primarily, we will allot seats on the basis of MHT-CET marks. Secondly, we will accommodate only those JEE students who had taken the MHT-CET 2016," said D S Meshram, Joint Director - DTE.

DTE has allotted around 15% seats for admissions in the engineering colleges in Maharashtra through JEE Main score. "Students who secured admission through their JEE Main score and had also taken the MHT-CET test will be given preference in the fourth round of CAP, in the Other than Maharashtra State category (OMS)," said Meshram.

This is not the only problem which engineering aspirants will have to face in Maharashtra, as the All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) has gone to the Supreme Court seeking a ban on four engineering colleges in Maharashtra. A letter sent from the AICTE to the Directorate of Technical Education (DTE) has named Padmabhushan Vasantdada Patil Pratishthans College, Sion, Anjuman-I-Islam's Saboo Siddik College, Byculla, Thadomal Shahani College, Bandra and Dr. J J Magdum College, Kolhapur.

The future of those students who have taken admissions to the above-mentioned engineering colleges will now depend on the decision of the Supreme Court.

JoSAA 2016: Preparatory courses admission schedule to be announced soon

Seat allocation for Preparatory courses are simultaneously taking place with the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) allotment rounds. As per the Joint Admission Board (JAB) records, so far 105 seats have been allocated in the 2016 Preparatory courses.

All the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) and Indian School of Mines (ISM) run a year-long Preparatory course for Scheduled Caste (SC), Scheduled Tribe (ST), and Person with Disability (PwD) candidates who failed to secure a seat this year (provided the conditions are met), but wish to pursue the same programme in the next academic year (2017 - 2018).

JAB is yet to release the admission schedule for Preparatory courses. Prof KV Krishna, Chairman, JEE Advanced Unit 2016, said, "We are yet to announce the date of reporting, and place of reporting for Preparatory courses. It will take some time."

There are 23 IITs, but not all of them conduct the Preparatory course. Krishna continued, "IIT Hyderabad will host the programme for students from IIT Bhilai, IIT Indore, IIT Bhubaneswar and IIT Hyderabad itself. We will make similar groups, only then the admission schedule for Preparatory courses be announced."

The academic session for Preparatory courses at IITs will start only in August, 2016, unlike other academic programmes which will commence from July.

According to the seat allotment statistics released by JoSAA after every round of allocation, the number of vacant seats has been increasing subsequently. After Round 1, there were 78 vacant seats, after round 2, 138, then 156, 175 and 186 in consecutive rounds.

Most of the institutes with vacant seats have remained constant from round 1 to round 5, i.e. NIT Jalandar, NIT Mizoram, NIT Agartala, NIT Sikkim, NIT Calicut and NIT Nagaland. Four out of six colleges belong to the north-eastern hemisphere in India.

In fact, through all the rounds, the number of vacant seats in each of these institutes has remained more or less the same. In NIT Nagaland, the number of courses with seats for allotment has increased from two to five in each round of allocation.

According to Prof. K.V. Krishna, JEE Advanced Chairman, "Most of these are home state seats. Students from the state, who were allotted these seats in the first round, may have got admission in another institute in the later rounds, because of which these seats are going vacant. Now these seats cannot be reallocated to students from another state."

He also suggested that most likely, there will not be any spot allocation round this year. If the home state students do not take up these seats in the next round, then it will be left upto the institutes to decide what is to be done with them.

JoSAA 2016: Schedule for Preparatory courses released

The preparatory course schedule released by JEE Advanced 2016 today, July 18, has listed the institutes that will be hosting the course for the next year. As per the list, reporting to host centres will commence in the first week of August, about the same time when first year lectures will start in IITs. This year IIT BHU, Gandhinagar, Guwahati, Hyderabad, Madras, Kharagpur, Roorkee and ISM Dhanbad are confirmed as host institutes where preparatory courses will be held.

Students who have qualified for preparatory courses can read here for more information. Those who have been allotted preparatory course seats in institutes that are not hosting the course, have to report at the partnered institutes. For e.g. Students allotted IIT Kanpur, should report at IIT BHU (Banaras Hindu University) for the course. Similarly, those allotted IIT Delhi, should report at IIT Roorkee. See image below.

Host centres for IIT Bombay, IIT Dharwad and IIT Goa are yet to be announced. Although, since IIT Dharwad and IIT Goa are presently mentored by IIT Bombay, the host institute for the three IITs will most likely be IIT Bombay.

The fifth round of seat acceptance for admission into IITS, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs has come to an end today at 5 pm.

Display of seat availability for sixth and final round will be declared tomorrow at 10 am.

Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) has also reported 186 seats as remaining vacant in different National Institutes of Technology (NITs). Most of the seats being Home state category seats.

JoSAA 2016: Sixth round seat allotment result announced

Candidates can report to their reporting centres (RC) on July 19, 2016 and July 20, 2016 from 10 AM to 5 PM on both the days for their seat acceptance. However, all those candidates who accepted seats in NITs/IIITs/IIEST/Other-GFTIs must report at their respective institutes during on July 22, 2016 to July 26, 2016.
