Grocery Retailing : Facing the 'Kirana' Challenge
For an average consumer, not only do Kirana shops offer spatial convenience, they also sell goods on credit and offer home delivery service. The management of kiranas involves minimal labour costs since the entire family works there. The focus is on creating and retaining clients, since it is the only source of livelihood for them. The business passes down through generations. As a result, shopping at a kirana, where the owner knows one's shopping habits personally, has been ingrained in the psyche of the Indian consumer.
In light of the above facts, what should the entry strategy for the large retailing chains planning to enter Indian markets be? We expect your entries to be based upon scenario analysis*. Please take into account the possible options with the retailing majors e.g. franchisee/subsidiary/JV, format, focus on tier-1/2 cities, assortment, learning from existing players etc.

Mr Syed Ahmed, ED-Marketing, ITC Ltd and Mr Jayant Pendharkar, VP, Head - Global Marketing, TCS Ltd, amongst others, will attempt to unravel the future of marketing from their very own perspectives.
Even as attempts are made to unravel the direction marketing is likely to take in the near future, Synapse 2006 intends to explore the relatively unexplored subject of 'Marketing in Movies'. This will take place through a workshop conducted by the pioneers of marketing in Bollywood Yash Raj Films, and will be conducted by Mr Tarun Tripathi, Head of Marketing, Yash Raj Films. As multinational retail giants steady their sights on one of the fastest growing consumer markets in the world, they are faced with challenges they will have to counter as they enter a market that revels in its diversity. With their typical characteristics and efficient use of resources, as well as personalized services, 'kirana' shops pose the biggest challenge yet for retail chains waiting to make their big-ticked debuts in the country. The Paper Writing Contest is sure to unearth practical and creative solutions to the challenge.
Big cash prizes are waiting to be won, even as the clock ticks away. The last date for entries is 18th Aug, 2006, and the results will be announced on 20th Aug, 2006. Rules and regulations, and registration details are available at http://www.iimk-mpower.info/.
