Gautam Mukherjee is the General Manager (Personnel) of ANZee Bank Plc, which is one of the larger foreign banks doing business in India. Every year, Gautam visits the campuses of various leading management institutes and picks up bright MBAs to work for his bank. Every year (since 1984) Gautam has been recruiting 5 to 6 MBAs. Gautams selection is excellent as none of these MBAs have yet switched jobs and most of them have been doing very well. Vijay Basudev is one such bright MBA that Gautam had recruited in 1981. Like most of the others, Vijay too has been doing very well and his product (he is in the Services Division) has been a grand success. Due to the success of this product Vijay has come in the limelight and a few competitors have already made him job offers. One of these offers has come from Country Had the leading foreign bank in India. Besides a handsome salary he has been offered a furnished house, an air-conditioned car and frequent foreign travel. Vijay is finding it extremely difficult to refuse this offer. Gautam gets to know this. As Vijay is a great asset to the bank, he calls him over for a chat. When he gets to hear of Vijays offer and Vijays demand of a counter offer from ANZee (if they want to retain him) he is in a fix. If he does make a counter offer to Vijay, it will involve promotions and superseding 8 others who are senior and doing as well. Vijays walking out would also mean a loss of clients for the bank (as they would shift to rival banks.) At the same time a promotion could mean a loss of 8 employees. What should Gautam Mukherjee do?
Case 2: The case of the University land
Grand Beach is building a hotel near the university campus & has asked the university to let it use campus land for an access road. Officials from the state government and the municipal corporation have taken up the hotels cause with the university. The university has refused the corporations request to hand over 700 sq. metres of land at the campus for the construction of a road, which would have mainly benefited the Beach hotel. At a meeting, the management council members of the statutory body unanimously resolved that the land could be used only for educational purposes. If we give up the land for use by a 5 star hotel, it would be for a commercial purpose. Thats not done in an educational institutions premises, a council member has been overheard saying. Beach, the government said, was a major foreign investor and the road would ease the problem hotel officials were facing as they transported construction materials to the site. The state Revenue Minister and the former Mayor are meeting with university officials about the issue. How can the situation be resolved?
Case 3: Tie Untied
NYL has been a successful manufacturer of ready-made shirts aimed at the low priced market segment, for the last 12 years. In 1998 it decided to launch a range of ties for that segment, and the response was incredible. These ties clocked sales of 50 lacs v/s optimistic expectations of 20 lacs, and in the next year it rocketed to another 2 crores. Based on that the company made huge expansion plans both in production as well as in marketing and ad-spend. It also unveiled plans to go international, and launch a premium range of products. But in the very next year, sales dropped unaccountably to Rs. 1 crore. This seemed particularly strange since there was no new competitor in the market or any notable or new activity from the existing camps. And this year; the sales are falling even more dangerously and will not even cross the Rs. 1 lac mark by the end of the year. With 6 months to go before the year ends, you as members of the senior management team of NYL have to make a decision.
Case 4: The case of a proposed dam
The water requirement of quite a few villages in Rajasthan is expected to triple in the next five to seven years. As more and more villages are irrigated the water shortage will be even more acute. The government is planning to build a dam, which would irrigate 150 villages in the vicinity. However, this would require submerging a temple and nearly 20 villages, which cover an area of 330 hectares. The villagers are not amenable to the idea. Vehement protests from them have led the government to reconsider the decision. Even while an alternate plan is being worked out, the engineers come up with a proposal to increase the irrigated area by 15% at nearly the same cost. The temple, though, will be submerged. Villagers remain stubborn in their protests. Finally, the CM sends the district magistrate to tackle the problem. What could be the optimal course of action?
Hi guys, I really need u r guidance for interviews coz I really never cleared any interviews till date( except one ). I am not an engineer and I feel that would work against me. Also could u tell me how r we suppose to answer the common question which most probably would b asked " WHY u have chosen SIMS". Could seniors shed some light on this, how did u answered it . Also I would like to know the ratio of engineers and non-engineers at SIMS. If any of the senior could answer this I would b really gr8ful to u guys. And finally KOI MUMBAI SE JA RAHA HAI SIMS KE LIYE. Regards, Rocky

Optimal solution
The ANZee Bank is looking for a solution of a fix wherein the employee is offered a higher package and perks by a rival organisation .Ideally Mr Mukherjee should discuss the issue with Vijay to know the real picture and then with other eight employees telling them the whole story. If the employees are willing to sacrifice their promotion for some period of time then a counter offer can be given to Vijay to get out of this catch22 situation .
If the employess dont agree to it , Vijay can be allowed to go and work for the other bank after serving the appopriate notice as 1) the customers may be retained to ANZee through the efforts of other eight employees. 2)Person appointed in lieu of Vijay may be able to serve the existing clinets in a better way and also, he may be able to bring many more clients for the bank .
"Take away the building premises ,machinery and other tangible assests but the employess with the orgaisation and there will another one better than the existing on a barren plot ,whereas the machinery will rust off and the grass will cover off the buliding without the employees in it".

Its a typical dilemma faced by modern HR managers across the sectors especially in fast growing sectors. And I feel Vijay counter offer needs to b dealt with extreme care.At this juncture Gautam cant afford to lose him, If u throw peanuts u will get monkeys. I would like to make following points
- Promote him- Yes it might sound a blatant statement, but we should remember it as an MNC bank and not an PSU .In MNCs they have a work culture where performance gets rewarded and I feel after 5 yrs vijay needs a promotion.
- If still u r in a flux to promote him then give him a plum foreign posting which he cant afford to resist for a short duration.
-And still he gets unmanageable then talk with him ask him for some time appoint a replacement for him ask Vijay to train this new appointee and just relax coz u have got a replacement.
I hope these 3 approaches would do.
Also people management is of most imp priority for any organisation so treat u r star performers well.
Case 3: Well if the sales were doing well in the last year & there were no new competitors it would mean that the old competitors must hav modified their strategy. They must hav improved the quality of their product. So one thing that should b done is to do a market survey & find out people prefer which brand & why? what is that special thing in their brand which we dont have. We should also be checking if anything went wrong from our production side(say any frauds as far as quality of the tie is concerned) We can also experiment with the tag line First impression is the last impression so allow us to make it memorable Ppl do pour in more suggestions also do tell me where I went wrong. Cheers
