Call me coservative or uninformed, but i havent heard of LIFA and i wouldnt go for a course that isnt so popular or has made any mark in the industry. Do a thorough anaylsis on its contents, background, credibility, and alumni (if you manage to locate any) before taking it up.

Had a sleepless night yesterday after reading another thread here on FRM:
http://www.pagalguy.com/discussions/financial-risk-manager-frm-by-garp-25017216

Do check out this thread...will give you some perspective. Made me question myself whether im going down the right lane by taking up CFA at all:(. Back to the drawing board now...need some serious expert advice on this. Will post my thoughts on this once i have some clarity.

Hey CTD!
the major reason why i'm taking L1 on June 3 is because of ur insights on this thread, so thanks a lot for it! :)

now about FRM Vs CFA. as someone who did lots of research on them, i can vouch that these two are very different courses with different perspectives.

You would beaware of the fact that Fin is a VERY broad are. WHEN SOMEONE SAYS ,"I like finance", that's one of the most generic statements s/he can make. So CFA is one thing, and PRM/FRM is another.

take CFA if you're interested to become a fin analyst in watever area you want. that's what it is for. makes you competitive AND gives you a "thappa" you passed it means you're good

Take FRM/PRM if you specifically want to go into Fin Risk Mgmt. that's a NICHE area. it has its own plus points, whichyou would obviously have gathered from the thread. The thappa factor also plays an imp role here, and job prospects are good, thopugh in some sectpors only.

and dude, if you are looking from a long term perspective, CFA is THE thing to do today. So don't wonder if you did the right thing or not. Beleive me, I trust you :)

TENNIS GAL, THIS POST I WROTE SHOULD SOLVE UR DOUBTS

Guys...for all of you there wid the "eligibility" criteria doubts,,chck dis link http://www.cfainstitute.org/cfaprog/faq.html##58
dis is wat it says :
" Can you help me to determine if my degree is comparable to a U.S. bachelor's degree?
Generally, applicants must have reached a level of study that qualifies them for acceptance to university graduate programs in the countries where they earned their undergraduate degrees. If you need assistance to determine whether or not your degree is comparable to a U.S. bachelors degree, CFA Institute suggests that you contact your college or university to make an inquiry."
As it says above...my interpretation is that u should be ELIGIBLE for graduate programs ( something equivalent to our M.Com), which anyone who has finishd B.Com is.so no prbs wid dat.the key here is "in the countries where they earned their undergraduate degrees."...so for us, its going to be grad programs(wt we call post grad) for Indian universities and MBA,M.Com, MA etc ALL accpt B.Com grads.
Also, had called up CFAI and asked them whether the 4 yr graduation versus the 3 year thng dat we B.Com ppl get wud make ne difference, they said there ws "no specific timeline regarding 15 or 16 yrs of education"...just dat u should be agrad or a grad in your final year ( full grad for appearing Level 2).
which makes sense cuz a 3 yr b.com grad is as good as a b.com equivalent frm d US, cuz both r grads int heir countries and dis being a global course thy cant enforce US stds.
wats more, if there indeed was ne such criteria, it would have blockd me frm enrolling for Level 2
hope dis helps.

heyy ! Level 1 is OKKK...altho thr a a LOT of concepts nothing is "2 hard" as such.if u spend time u can CERTAINLY grasp all concepts.i would highly recommend buying the Secret Sauce, and writing down the points YOU feel r imp but schweser have missed to cover in secret sauce.dis way, once ur done wid the syllabus,u just have to read the Secret Sauce...
Level 2 is totally diff, am findin dat even aftr spendin considerable time on thngs like Forex, the concepts r still not clear 😞 ...n god knows wat derivatives will do to me.
as it says in the book1 Schweser " enjoy Level 1 while u can, Level 2 wont b the same"
Amen to that !

dude...read up the posts in this thread from the start, u'll get a very good idea bout CFA (AIMR).
there is a seperate ICFAI thread too, go thro dat and then make ur decision !
cuz asking ANYONE here, u'll be recommended the CFA (AIMR), while on d othr thread they'll tell u to do ICFAI CFA !
so its ur call relli...aftr gng thro the posts

Of course following up a CFA would b very good...about the work exp, i personally dont think your brother's exp in the Navy would count as "valid" work-ex...
but he can still appear for all 3 levels and gain exp side-by-side or even later.
dsts not an issue...it will just mean that he will get his charter later...but passing 3 levels is 90% there

Hi,

Anyone who has done/doing both CFA and FRM please let me know what percentage of course is similar in FRM and CFA level 1. Actually I was planning to do both CFA and FRM this year. CFA in December'07 and FRM in november'07. Please let me know whether it will be possible for me to clear both the exams at the same time considering the fact that I can dedicate 100-125 hours to studies every month.
Please let me know ASAP as I have to register for FRM at the earliest before the early registration deadline (30th April)for the exam gets over.

Thanks

Heyyy...i dont think CFA Level 1 and FRM will be having much in common.if anything, L2, L3 and FRM will b having something commonn.but that too not more than 25% i thnk...
so if u r planning on studying for 1 course (CFA)...and just a bit more effort for the other(FRM) or vice versa...its not a good idea.
why dont u chck out the FRM site?thy hv d curriculum thr i thnk.also chck the FRM thread startd by the good Tumtum...he's posted the syllabus on sum page thr.

I would suggest not taking that route.I know of people who tried a similar thing last year and ended up flunking one of the exams.Passing these exams one at a time itself is difficult let alone two. Also giving 100-125 hours a week wont help much as you need time to assimilate and absorb the material .
There is hardly any overlap between the CFA and FRM course except may up to a little bit for the Quantitative techniques portion.Even after that I would say 90% of the topics are dissimilar.

Rajat...r u giving Level 2?

Yes ...PM if you wanna discuss about L2 lets leave the personal questions out of the thread.

Hi guys,

I am a Business Analyst working in USA. I have a bachlors in computer science and MBA from India. I do not have any financial background at all. I want to pursue CFA so that I can move into financial field. I am planning to give the December 2007 exam. After reading the posts of several people I came to know that there are 3 kinds of course material available:
1. CFA institute gives its own books.
2. There are two other course material providers Stella and schweser.

I am confused that for someone without any background knowledge on finance which one is the best? Also if there any other people similar to my backgorund please let me know your experiences with the preparation. I am not sure if I will be able to crack it or not but I know for sure that it is worth trying. So, ny suggestions will be greatly appreciated.

Thanks
