Hi all,

I was a silent reader and follower of this thread for quite some time. But now the time has come to be more active. well frnds, I have enrolled for Level 1 , Dec Exam. And going through some references. I have collected some materials from net and for the time being good amount of study materail i am having. I would like to call all folks who are going to take the Level 1 exam in 2007 to become more active and start discussing and sharing knowledge and resources. Well about me ....I am right now working from Bangalore. Passed out my Enginering in 2006 from IIT and working in IT sector. Have keen interest in investment and equity research kinda stuff. so ppl come together and lets have some active group.

Resources I am having :

1) Schweser study material in pdf form .. all 6 books for 2007 exam.

2) Financial Accounting book in pdf form for CFA references [ I don't remember the author name right now]

3) Investment analysis and portfolio management [ kelly etc. ]

4) Microeconomics and Macroeconomics [ ICFAI Books for thr MS (finance) degree ]

5) more books which i have collected but haven't started reading.

for the time being...I am going through financial accounting books.

Hope to see more ppl coming together soon.

sorry double post !!

hi,
Like many others like moi too has been a silent follower of this thread. I will be taking the L1 exam in dec 07 probably. Me belongs to a non finance background (same old IT) and will be joining a decent B- school in June/July.

Well, I spoke to my friend's friend (this dood has cleared L1 recently) and came to know that CFA is not what I thought it was. So, I want ur opinions.

"cfa totally focuses on equity research which is one part of finance"

Well, I knew that CFA is a course which has been designed to meet certain objectives. But i was under the impression that atleast the L1 exam tests generic stuff : similar to what they teach in MBA first yr:neutral: I've evn heard ppl comparing CFA with MBA (Finance). Seems that this is not the case. And guys what is this "equity research"?.I tried to google it up and dint get a very clear picture.
"I(Moi frend's friend) have found many people regretting after taking level 1 due to its very restricted domain in finance(equity research)"
:wow: Is it so? I have been following this C.F.A thread for quite some time now and have not heard anything of this sort.
"There are 2 different kinds of material available- one from CFA institute and the other schweser notes"

Has anyone tried using the notes got from the CFA institute.

I am not concerned about the preparation itself., But the ends that a L1/L2 will help me achieve.
Thanks a lot in advance ppl..

Cheers!
Raama

ps- if u feel that this post is irrelevent / misleading feel free to groan at me.

The battle between CFA US and ICFAI is a heated battle now. AICTE and government of India will take action against CFA US in the next 6 weeks. CFA US is an association of individuals and can not use word chartered. CFA US have not take any permission from Govt to start its course in India. High court have ordered Government to stop CFA US conducting its examination in India and charging hefty fees.

I am not against any institute. I want to bring out facts which press have brought so that we can have peaceful discussion and opinions. These are not my views, it is a hardcore fact and a reality.

I tend to respect your opinions in a lot of other threads but unfortunately in the case of CFA v/s ICFAI you tend to be very biased.A good example of that is this very post. Now the two small articles appearing in the newspapers only report that ICFAI has filed a petition against CFA and the HC has admitted that petition .That does not imply that the Govt of India or AITCE plan to take any action against it let alone the time frame of 6 weeks.

I commend that you intend to bring out the facts but I would appreciate that you stop acting like a tabloid journalist and unnecessarily add spice and controversy to places where it is not needed.

Totally false .Let me clear a few misconceptions .CFA is not geared towards Equity Research but towards Investment Management that is why in Level 3 80% of the portion is portfolio management.Equity research can be a subset of Investment Management when you are working in buy side firms like Asset Management corporations,Hedge Funds etc or in the sell side like an Investment Bank.
The ultimate aim of a person working for a CFA would be to become a Fund Manager however such opportunities are limited in India and hence ppl feel that a CFA only gets you into equity research.
Abroad where the market is much more diverse and has a lot more depth a CFA is useful a a variety of different functions .
In any case Finance is far too big for an one certification to do everything.
THe CFA focuses on Investment Management,FRM on Risk Management ,CIAI on Alternative Investments (the kind of assets Hedge funds usually deal in) .In short finance is far to big to be covered by one program.

However the greatest appeal for the CFA lies in it's brand value due to the fact that it is in the market for such a long time it is easier for the market players to evaluate someone with a qualification that they know and recognize than with some which they do not.

His old habits will die hard. 😃

ICFAI and its small-time offshoots (tripura, wtf??! What next....ICFAI lakshadweep?!) have dipped to new lows in their battle for stealing the brand name of a course that everyone knows rightfully belongs to the CFA institute, USA. Not only has ICFAI encroached upon a prestigious course based on several technicalities, but is now fighting for its ouster from india. If it is successful, which is unlikely, thousands of indian students will be denied the chance of taking up a truly high-quality international finance course, and of course, that means better revenue for ICFAI, which seems to be its sole purpose of existence. Those guys have no idea what they're talking about when they say "the course and the certificates are not relevant to india at all"! Apparently, equity research and investment analysis is not relevant to india! "The American Institute charges a hefty fee of US $2535 (Rs.1,14,000) from each student for a program which has no content relevant to India." Absolutely ridiculously unbelievable. Activities of frauds like these give us a bad name globally. No wonder people in the west think of us as snake-charmers and beggars who commute on elephants.

I havent used the CFAI notes, but i have looked thru them. I dont think they're very useful from an exam point of view. Basically, they have compiled the contents from all the recommended textbooks into one set. The content is exactly the same as that in the original reference book...the only convenience is that you wont have to buy all the text books, and have all the relevant chapters from those books bound together in a set of 4 books. No other value addition. No exam-specific content. Thousands of pages of text. If you are planning to study from the reference books, then it will be useful coz it is compact and everything is in one place.

heyy i have 2-3 of the books from where the CFAI have taken the original readings.thng is i rely on Schweser to take me thro the actual exam, but the original readings r much better on the educational front.make the conecpts clearer with real case studies which is a BIG plus.the 1'st chapter of Book4 is an example.try reading it from the original reading to know wat am talkin bout.
but then we r here primarily to clear the CFA Level 2 ...so Schweser rockz !

haha ! i cudnt care even if we were disallowed the use of the words CFA after completing the 3 levels.employers ( Goldman, DSP Merill and ALL the big brokers) know the value of the CFA designation.the WORST case scenario is dat we cant use the words CFA...still the employer knows the value of passing 3 levels and will also know that just becoz of sum legal hurdle we arent any less "charterholders" than sum1 say ...in the US.and while my knowledge of the law is near to zero,i dont think the govt can adnw ill stop the CFAi from conducting exams in India.( as stated by our good frnd Babu)

They conduct the exams in over 100 countries and if it hasnt been a trbl in those 100, i see NO reason why it should b here.its ridiculous !

Disclaimer: am NOT gainst ICFAI or any member/candidate affiliated to it.

Thats the difference between the actual textbooks and exam guides. The textbooks will give you all the details and explain really well, but that approach coupled with the vast syllabus makes it impractical to use them for clearing the exam. There are many exam-oriented nitty gritties such as using the calculators and preparing for frequently asked questions that a textbook cant prepare you for. Also, the textbooks usually dont contain numericals or solved examples. It is quite difficult to apply something you learn as four pages of pure text and solve a numeric problem based on textual understanding. If i had all the time in the world and a 10 GB memory card in my brain, i'd love to study directly from the textbooks, but i have neither!
