GMAT is quite different from CAT. Though maths section is comparatively easier but english section is lot different.

@leonidas. Hi Iam planning to give GMAT this year .I have not started prep yet.Because I'm confused if I could get admission into the top 20 Bschools or not.I have doubts whether my profile will work or not.I have 2.5+ years IT experience as of no with an Indian MNC(IT) .

My B.Tech CGPA - 7.46(Computer Science)

12th - 97%

10th - 90.33%.

So,where should I start with and how do I prep my profile.?? Are there any good coaching classes in Mumbai.I have no idea about SOP,LOR etc etc .Please help me out how to sort those even.

Hi @trgtmba2012, you are good in academics - a plus for you. Which year would you like to take admission?

Please register yourself in www.mba.com and download Gmatprep software – which provides you two free GMAT tests. Go thru the one single test and analyze the result for your strength and areas of improvement. 3-4 months would be more than enough for you to prepare yourself for GMAT exam, however please analyze it by yourself – it may be 2 months enuf for you..
If your targeting Top 20 b schools globally, I would recommend you to target 730-750.

Key – Be consistent in studies – ask any kind of support in the forum. I would recommend you to prepare yourself first – don't be in a rush – one by one understand the concepts – grasp – apply and move on..! Books you may refer OG 12 or 13 / Manhattan series. all the best!

@leonidas.

buddy.. can u please recommend the books for Grammer & VA sections ..

TIA..

just a wee bit of update - gave MGMAT mock today, got 650(51+31) . I left around 11 questions unsolved in verbal and was heavily penalised. score dropped from 85% percentile to straight 58% at the last question.
Integrated reasoning was a nightmare. Got an score of 5.97 and percentile of 5-7 , what does this mean? and what should be the target score in this section ?ďťż

Do not worry about your IR at all. Infact the MGMAT mock IRs are scored on the tougher side and anything above 5 is a pretty decent performance. You will feel the difference when you take your GMAT Prep IRs :). So no worries on that part.

However, there is everything to worry with the fact that you left ~11 VA problems unattempted. This gives me an impression that your time management on the VA section is severly out of place. There is no use of getting a 51 on QA and leaving 11 questions un-attempted on the VA. Remember that you are penalised heavily for leaving the questions unattempted, even more so then getting the questions wrong.

You have not given enough information about your previous track records on VA section. Also, what is your timing consideration for each subsection - SC, CR, and RC? Basically you need to be able to move to the next problem if you go beyond your cut off time for each question type. If you do not follow this please do it going forward.

You need to have a timing chart in place that you can refer at critical time points during the test.

Your time management is also a factor of your willingness to make a few spread out guesses across the section if you lag behind the cut off limit you need to be for that question number. Be ready to make guesses because everyone does that at some time or the other; even the instructors and even those who score a perfect 800.

Time management is also a factor of how strong your fundamentals are in SC, CR, and RC. Generally SC is where students see massive score improvements primarily due to the inherent nature of the question type.

The situation would be worse if you would have not replicated the exact exam conditions , i.e taking the paper with all the four sections including the two 8 min breaks. In such a case your VA performance would still be inflated because you did not have to combat extra fatigue.

So, there is a lot to ponder about. Please assess your situation and get back if you have further queries.

@leonidas.
Pune?

@leonidas I am giving GMAT for the first time on July 30th. Scored 87.3 in XAT 2013. How should I focus in the coming months. Will also appear for CAT 2013.
@bodhi_vriksha Bodhi, first of all THANKS a ton for the advice and guidance. The problem is I am following OG 13 , and aristotle prep SC grail for the verbal part. But when I solve them I find the question easily solvable ,and am able to do solve within 1.75 minutes of time duration. But not in real test. As you righly pointed out , fatigue is a problem , I am working on it ...

Hi Puys,I am planning to take GMAT this April and unfortunately i hvnt started off with the prep yet.
With about 40 days and a lot experience of CAT prep in hand, what would be the best study material to start with. Also please suggest best mock test sources (in addition to the official ones) and their approx cost.
Thanks!
