for q1,i thnk d last line says 'people will never fall sick'.so i think its c.q2 has to be b.d doesnt seem to be so bcoz it says dat people r dissatisfied.if people r dissatisfied, they 'll leave d job.cudn't get q3 and q4 i think its a bcoz of last line which says dat blockade will result in international discord.
hope it helps.

thnx dude but m nt 2 mch convinced with Ques1 explanation...in option D, if ppl r genetically susceptilble to diseases..this means they'll fall sick too...
may b m nt able to mae out the diff b/w options c & d
Well m nt convinced with Ques 1 & 3 explanations....

Can u throw some more light..and according to u wat shall be the ans

Please see below :

Ques 1. Within 20 years it will probably be possible to identify the genetic susceptibility an individual may have toward any particular disease. Eventually, effective strategies will be discovered to counteract each such susceptibility. Once these effective strategies are found, therefore, the people who follow them will never get sick.
The argument above is based on which of the following assumptions?
(A) For every disease there is only one strategy that can prevent its occurrence.
(B) In the future, genetics will be the only medical specialty of any importance.
(C) All human sicknesses are in part the result of individuals' genetic susceptibilities.
(D) All humans are genetically susceptible to some diseases.
(E) People will follow medical advice when they are convinced that it is effective
Well the confusion is between choices 'c' & 'd'.......
The argument says that if people follow the strategies to counter each susceptibility they won't fall sick. So it is assumed that all the sicknesses are a result of some genetic susceptibility.
D talks about some diseases, but the argument is about all the sicknesses.

Ques 3. Although parapsychology is often considered a pseudoscience, it is in fact a genuine scientific enterprise, for it uses scientific methods such as controlled experiments and statistical tests of clearly stated hypotheses to examine the questions it raises.
The conclusion above is properly drawn if which of the following is assumed?
(A) If a field of study can conclusively answer the questions it raises, then it is a genuine science.
(B) Since parapsychology uses scientific methods, it will produce credible results.
(C) Any enterprise that does not use controlled experiments and statistical tests is not genuine science.
(D) Any field of study that employs scientific methods is a genuine scientific enterprise.
(E) Since parapsychology raises clearly statable questions, they can be tested in controlled experiments.
Between 'c' & 'd'.....

C says what is not a genuine science, it doesn't mean that if something employs scientific methods will be a genuine science. So as per this statement, there can be other factors also to determine if some study is a genuine science or not.

But D defines what is a genuine science.

Hope it helps.

Q.1
Installing scrubbers in smokestacks and switching to cleaner-burning fuel are the two methods available to Northern Power for reducing harmful emissions from its plants. Scrubbers will reduce harmful emissions more than cleaner-burning fuels will. Therefore, by installing scrubbers, Northern Power will be doing the most that can be done to reduce harmful emissions from its plants.
Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?
(A) Switching to cleaner-burning fuel will not be more expensive than installing scrubbers.
(B) Northern Power can choose from among various kinds of scrubbers, some of which are more effective than others.
(C) Northern Power is not necessarily committed to reducing harmful emissions from its plants.
(D) Harmful emissions from Northern Powers plants cannot be reduced more by using both methods together than by the installation of scrubbers alone
(E) Aside from harmful emissions from the smokestacks of its plants, the activities of Northern Power do not cause significant air pollution.

Advertisement: For sinus pain, three out of four hospitals give their patients Novex. So when you want the most effective painkiller for sinus pain, Novex is the one to choose.
Which of the following, if true, most seriously undermines the advertisements argument?
(A) Some competing brands of painkillers are intended to reduce other kinds of pain in addition to sinus pain.
(B) Many hospitals that do not usually use Novex will do so for those patients who cannot tolerate the drug the hospitals usually use.
(C) Many drug manufacturers increase sales of their products to hospitals by selling these products to the hospitals at the lowest price the manufacturers can afford.
(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctors prescription
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.

Q3.
The reason much refrigerated food spoils is that it ends up out of sight at the back of the shelf. So why not have round shelves that rotate? Because such rotating shelves would have just the same sort of drawback, since things would fall off the shelves edges into the rear corners.
Which of the following is presupposed in the argument against introducing rotating shelves?
(A) Refrigerators would not be made so that their interior space is cylindrical.
(B) Refrigerators would not be made to have a window in front for easy viewing of their contents without opening the door.
(C) The problem of spoilage of refrigerated food is not amenable to any solution based on design changes.
(D) Refrigerators are so well designed that there are bound to be drawbacks to any design change
(E) Rotating shelves would be designed to rotate only while the refrigerator door was open.

Q4.
It would cost Rosetown one million dollars to repair all of its roads. In the year after completion of those repairs, however, Rosetown would thereby avoid incurring three million dollars worth of damages, since currently Rosetown pays that amount annually in compensation for damage done to cars each year by its unrepaired roads.
Which of the following, if true, gives the strongest support to the argument above?
(A) Communities bordering on Rosetown also pay compensation for damage done to cars by their unrepaired roads.
(B) After any Rosetown road has been repaired, several years will elapse before that road begins to damage cars.
(C) Rosetown would need to raise additional taxes if it were to spend one million dollars in one year on road repairs.
(D) The degree of damage caused to Rosetowns roads by harsh weather can vary widely from year to year
(E) Trucks cause much of the wear on Rosetowns roads, but owners of cars file almost all of the claims for compensation for damage caused by unrepaired roads.

Demographers doing research for an international economics newsletter claim that the average per capita income in the country of Kuptala is substantially lower than that in the country of Bahlton. They also claim, however, that whereas poverty is relatively rare in Kuptala, over half the population of Bahlton lives in extreme poverty. At least one of the demographers claims must, therefore, be wrong.
The argument above is most vulnerable to which of the following criticisms?
(A) It rejects an empirical claim about the average per capita incomes in the two countries without making any attempt to discredit that claim by offering additional economic evidence.
(B) It treats the vague term poverty as though it had a precise and universally accepted meaning.
(C) It overlooks the possibility that the number of people in the two countries who live in poverty could be the same even though the percentages of the two populations that live in poverty differ markedly.
(D) It fails to show that wealth and poverty have the same social significance in Kuptala as in Bahlton
(E) It does not consider the possibility that incomes in Kuptala, unlike those in Bahlton, might all be very close to the countrys average per capita income.

The more Colombian beans in a blend of coffee, the better the blend, and no company purchases more Colombian beans than Kreemo Coffee, Inc. So it only stands to reason that if you buy a can of Kreemos coffee, youre buying the best blended coffee available today.
The reasoning of the argument in the advertisement is flawed because it overlooks the possibility that
(A) The equipment used by Kreemo to blend and package its coffee is no different from that used by most other coffee producers
(B) Not all of Kreemos competitors use Colombian coffee beans in the blends of coffee they sell
(C) Kreemo sells more coffee than does any other company

1)The Argument says there are two methods to control air pollution and then concludes one of the method(installing scrubbers) is more useful than the other. So an assumption that has to be made should say something about first method is not more useful than the second or the other possibility that combined they are not more useful than the second one.
Now D clearly talks about one of these scenarios. So I think D is correct.
E talks about other factors than those mentioned in the premise so it seems out of scope.
2)For something to weaken an argument it should weaken the premise on which the argument is based
Now A talks about other kinds of pain. Out of scope so ruled out
B talks about only a certain kind of patients so a general conclusion about Novex regarding sinus can't be weakened.
C talks about drug manufacturers and products in general so out of scope. Even if you apply it to Novex case and think this may be the reason why novex is used other drugs can also use it so this doesn't weaken the specific conclusion
D this gives an alternative explanation on why Novex is most used (not because it is the best but because so this seems correct.
E does not weaken at all.
If you still end up with confusion use a rating system rate the strongest if I have to choose between C and D. D is the stronger one for the reasons already stated.
D seems correct
3)To argue against X a presupposition about an advantage of X not being there has to be made
A . this looks like an advantage of X because round shelves can fit in exactly in which case items may not fall off and end out of sight. So A seems correct Let me check whether any other alternative presents a stronger case.
B looks a general statement so out of scope
C same as B out of scope
D again out of scope
E this is not an advantage of X so not a presupposition
A seems correct
4)For an information to support the argument it has to strengthen the premise
Here Rose town's expenditure on road is justified if there is benefit that outweighs the expenditure
A. out of scope( why talk about communities?)
B.Looks like there is net profit to Rose town.So seems correct
C.This does not support the argument whatsoever.
D.out of scope
E.whats the difference? whether truck owners claim or the car owners Rose town has to pay so no benefit. E is ruled out
B seems to be correct
5)There are two pieces of data here first, average per capita income and second, poverty
A. It is not trying to discredit any specific data but simply states one of the claim should be wrong.
B. Even though the line of poverty( some economics term) varies from country to country the meaning of poverty doesn't so it is not vague.
C.out of scope
D. Social significance? out of scope.
E. This points a possible criticism of one of the data given and of all the choices this looks close.
E seems to be correct
6) Columbia coffee beans --> more beans----> better blend ----->better blended coffee
A. Doesn't state any flaw
B.Not all but some may use.Why they are still not the best then? states no flaw
C.Sells more coffee so there is a chance there is going to be less beans per blend so quality reduces.Looks ok.
D.out of scope
E.Argument is concerned about blended coffee. out of scope
So
C seems to be correct. Looking to see the correct answers for these

What is wring with 'e'

Author has stated only two methods for reducing harmful emission from the plant:
1)using scrubber in smokestack, or
2)switching to cleaner burning fuel
and than "concluded" that the plant is doing the most that can be done (by choosing the better option from the only two available alternatives)

Note that even if the "smokestack" is not the only source of pollution in the plant, it does not affect the conclusion. moreover (e) is kinda out of scope.

Correct option (d) as it assumes that using both the option together is as good as using scrubbers alone. and, if it is not true, the plant has to use both the options to claim that it is doing the best.

(D) Unlike some competing brands of painkillers, Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctors prescription
(E) In clinical trials Novex has been found more effective than competing brands of painkillers that have been on the market longer than Novex.
The ans could be 'c'

you r right...answer has to be (C).

it is only a guess;) (D) ... never seen anything like this before

(E) Trucks cause much of the wear on Rosetowns roads, but owners of cars file almost all of the claims for compensation for damage caused by unrepaired roads.
Wats wrong with 'e'

I think (e) is out of scope....since author has already mentioned that it is the "cars" owners who file the claims of $ 3 million every year. Who damages the roads? doesn't matter...

(E) It does not consider the possibility that incomes in Kuptala, unlike those in Bahlton, might all be very close to the countrys average per capita income.
Wats wrong with 'b'

I think, author has used the same meaning of the term "poverty" to categorize the poor of both the countries - whatever may be the international standards.

(D) Kreemos coffee is the most expensive blended coffee available today

Because author is comparing only "blended" coffees and not "unblended". Conclusion states that:
"if you buy a can of Kreemos coffee, youre buying the best blended coffee available today."

Hey Shiva,

1. Convinced with the explanation...ans is 'e'

2. In 'd' ....Novex is available from pharmacies without a doctors prescription...so it has nothing to do with hospitals prescribing for Novex...
so I dont think 'd' is correct...
However, in 'c' if the drug (Novex) is available at the lower price, hospitals might prescribe the medicine.
So I think 'c' can be a good choice......Surpridsingly the ans is 'b'

3. Again the statement "Because such rotating shelves would have just the same sort of drawback" tempts me to pick 'd'. As 'a' seems a bit weird to corelate, i chose 'd'
But the ans is 'a'....
Can u xplain this in depth

4. I picked option 'e' coz it says trucks blah blah ....and cars file almost all of the claims...
So doesn't it support our arguement that Rosetown will save $3million if it constructs the road.....If the road is constructed (repaired), car owners won't be able to claim

i agree to 'b' too, but I somehow feel 'e' is correct too and a bit better.
the right ans is 'b'

5. in 'e' that incomes in Kuptala, might all be very close to the countrys average per capita income. - so what ? can u xplain this...:boat: i think i dint get it quite well ;)
the right ans is 'e'

6. agreed  the ans is 'c'

2. I am also prety much convinced with 'c'

3. no the right choice is 'a'...well lets wait for Shiva's reply on this.....Dude we'll face weird ques only in GMAT

4. yeah... the damages claimed by car...this is the reason for rosetown to decrease the amount to 1 million as after rosetown repairs its roads, car owners won't be able to claim such a huge amount...let me know ur thoughts.....

5. wats ur ans....m nt able to get it....so waiting for the right explanation....

6. the ans is 'c'...i think Shiva gave a good reason....so m convinced on this..

but if can help me with other ques....
Q1.
Although aspirin has been proven to eliminate moderate fever associated with some illnesses, many doctors no longer routinely recommend its use for this purpose. A moderate fever stimulates the activity of the bodys disease-fighting white blood cells and also inhibits the growth of many strains of disease-causing bacteria.
If the statements above are true, which of the following conclusions is most strongly supported by them?
(A) Aspirin, an effective painkiller, alleviates the pain and discomfort of many illnesses.
(B) Aspirin can prolong a patients illness by eliminating moderate fever helpful in fighting some diseases.
(C) Aspirin inhibits the growth of white blood cells, which are necessary for fighting some illnesses.
(D) The more white blood cells a patients body produces, the less severe the patients illness will be
(E) The focus of modern medicine is on inhibiting the growth of disease-causing bacteria within the body.

Q2.
Because postage rates are rising, Home Decorator magazine plans to maximize its profits by reducing by one half the number of issues it publishes each year. The quality of articles, the number of articles published per year, and the subscription price will not change. Market research shows that neither subscribers nor advertisers will be lost if the magazines plan is instituted.
Which of the following, if true, provides the strongest evidence that the magazines profits are likely to decline if the plan is instituted?
(A) With the new postage rates, a typical issue under the proposed plan would cost about one-third more to mail than a typical current issue would.
(B) The majority of the magazines subscribers are less concerned about a possible reduction in the quantity of the magazines articles than about a possible loss of the current high quality of its articles.
(C) Many of the magazines long-time subscribers would continue their subscriptions even if the subscription price were increased.
(D) Most of the advertisers that purchase advertising space in the magazine will continue to spend the same amount on advertising per issue as they have in the past
(E) Production costs for the magazine are expected to remain stable.

In Q2, although C appears to be very tempting (i chose C too first:D), it doesnt even mention novex at all.if it said that novex manufacturers are selling the drugs at cheaper rates, then it would have been the right answer.but till then, B is our best bet.

1. right 'd'

6. the ans is 'c'...i think Shiva gave a good reason....so m convinced on this..

but if. can help me with other ques....

Question 2. Option (C) is absolutely correct. I have checked it in OG11 as well.

Question 5. as u said, right answer is (e). Lets us assume we have two groups of 10 members each. Incomes of all the members in both the grps are as follows:
Grp A: 3, 3, 3, 10, 10, 10, 10, 2, 2, 2 ==> average income: 5.5

Grp B: 5, 6, 4, 4, 6, 3, 7, 5, 5, 5 ===> average income is still: 5

If poverty line is: equal to or less than 3, Grp A has 6 members below poverty line whereas grp B has only 1.

Therefore, if all the incomes in Kuptala are very close to per capita income it might have lesser number of people living below povery line than that of bahlton
1. right 'd'

Shiva,

can u plz explain the answer to question 3 in depth. i m not gettin it
Hey Shiva,

2)Hmmm this is case of picking the best option. Let me put it this way if you go to a hospital and say you have headache and if Novex is readily available as it doesn't need a doctor's prescription (if it is needed only a doctor can precribe that to you and then you have go to a medical store to get it) then anyone in the hospital can safely give to you. My point here is to weaken an argument an alternative cause has to be state.
C says a general cause on which involves many drug store and products not particularly Novex so it has to be out of scope and moreover it does nothing to deny the fact that Novex is best. However much I try I am not convinced about any other choice It simply has to be D as it provides an alternative explanation that novex is given because it is easily avilable and not particularly because it is the best. This like you gettinga Vicks 500 from someone in hospital or a medical store.
D seems correct cross the check ans if you can or test the source I am not convinced about B which states something about certain patients so it cannot contribute to completely denying Novex is Best

3) The author is putting forth an argument which is favoring the use of round shelves. So he goes on to tell it has the same draw so why not use it. Consider this. I need to hire an employee I have 2 choices. If I have to reject a second employee I should presuppose that hiring him has no obvious advantage. So now think what should I presuppose to argue against using round shelves? If the refrigerator is is cylindrical and of same radius then things will not fall and if it roates all things are seen which is a clear advantage D states a disadvantage of all designs how will it help me to argue agains uisng round shelves( specific case)?????

4) I think by now u agree with me on this one

5)The argument states some about per capita income and the goes on to say about poverty but look at the author's tone he uses the word "however" which helps me to conclude he believes if x happens then y cannot happen. That is he believes if average per capita income of Bahlton is greater than kuptala then it should not be having so many poor people than kuptala. Now what helps me to criticize this? consider in an office of 3 persons the average income is 3rs and if everyone gets 3 rs then all are equal for another office with average income is 5 and if one of then gets 13 rs others can something like 1 re each which makes the majority poor and helps me state that authors argument if X happens then y cannot happen is not sound. So Answer is E.Hope this helps
Hi,

Can some help point out the correct option for this -

Blood banks will shortly start to screen all donors for NANB hepatitis. Although the new screening tests are estimated to disqualify up to 5 percent of all prospective blood donors, they will still miss two-thirds of donors carrying NANB hepatitis. Therefore, about 10 percent of actual donors will still supply NANB-contaminated blood.
The argument above depends on which of the following assumptions?
(A) Donors carrying NANB hepatitis do not, in a large percentage of cases, carry other infections for which reliable screening tests are routinely performed.
(B) Donors carrying NANB hepatitis do not, in a large percentage of cases, develop the disease themselves at any point.
(C) The estimate of the number of donors who would be disqualified by tests for NANB hepatitis is an underestimate.
(D) The incidence of NANB hepatitis is lower among the potential blood donors than it is in the population at large.
(E) The donors who will still supply NANB-contaminated blood will donate blood at the average frequency for all donors.

Hi,

Can some one help me with this Q ?

A recent survey of all auto accident victims in Dole County found that, of the severely injured drivers and front-seat passengers, 80 percent were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents. This indicates that, by wearing seat belts, drivers and front-seat passengers can greatly reduce their risk of being severely injured if they are in an auto accident.
The conclusion above is not properly drawn unless which of the following is true?
(A) Of all the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey, more than 20 percent were wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(B)Considerably more than 20 percent of drivers and front-seat passengers in Dole County always wear seat belts when traveling by car.
(C) More drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey than rear-seat passengers were very severely injured.
(D) More than half of the drivers and front-seat passengers in the survey were not wearing seat belts at the time of their accidents.
(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

The argument states that New test can only eliminate 1/3 patients and concludes 10 % will still go through. Now an assumption which helps this conclusion should be something that states more NANB patients are not eliminated that it does not come down from 10%
A. if this assumption is true. If NANB patients carry other disease for which there are reliable tests then they will be eliminated so the final 10 % will come down. However if they do not carry these disease then they go through and 10 % staya as it is. So this seems ok.
B. It doesn't matter whether they develop or not.Irrelevant
C. Underestimate so what? Irrelevant.
D. population in general why does this come into picture. Out of scope
E.So what? it does nothing to help me say 10 % remain as it is
A seems to be correct

(E) Most of the auto accidents reported to police in Dole County do not involve any serious injury.

This looks like an absurd question with no clear winners. The argument is something like this
survey--- drivers and front seat passengers---80 percent not wearing seat belts---wear seat belt-- reduce risk.
We need to select an option such that if it is false the conclusion is not correct
A.80 percent not wearing seat belt, so I know 20 percent are wearing seat belt. It states the same thing but if it false then the evidence should state 100 % were not wearing sear belts so if this is false then it alters the premise. I am not able to say this is strong or rule this out so I keep this.
B.This is concerned about what was happening when accidents happened. Out of scope
C. Rare seat passengers? Out of scope. the argument is about front seat passengers and drivers.
D.If this is true it weakens the conclusion rather then helping to strengthen.Ruled out
E. Report to police why additional and irrelevant data? out of scope.
So A is the only one left and I have no other choice but to go with it.
A seems correct

well montaques said he checked the ans in OG 11 and the ans is 'c'...but i m not sure whether this is from OG11......

Thnx..it was really helpful....
