IELTS Cut Off 2024

The IELTS (International English Language Testing System) is a prominent English proficiency test widely used by individuals seeking to study abroad. Accepted by over 11,000 institutions, universities, and immigration authorities globally, the IELTS cut-off score represents the minimum score required for application. Meeting this cut-off makes you eligible to apply, but it does not guarantee admission. To enhance your chances of acceptance, aim for scores above the cut-off to strengthen your application.

IELTS is designed to evaluate English language proficiency across all levels, so there is no passing or failing grade. Scores are given for each of the four skills on a scale from 1 to 9, and an overall band score is also provided. Note that the required IELTS scores can vary depending on the college and program you are applying to, and not all universities or programs require IELTS scores. Your overall band score is crucial if you plan to apply to a university, seek employment, or immigrate to an English-speaking country.

IELTS and the CEFR

Cambridge English has conducted several studies to align the IELTS 9-band scale with the six CEFR levels, although exact correspondence between IELTS band scores and CEFR transition points is not always precise. Here’s a general mapping of IELTS scores to CEFR levels:

  • IELTS Score 9: CEFR Level C2 (Proficient User)
  • IELTS Score 8: CEFR Level C1
  • IELTS Score 7.5: CEFR Level C1
  • IELTS Score 7: CEFR Level C1
  • IELTS Score 6.5: CEFR Level B2 (Independent User)
  • IELTS Score 6: CEFR Level B2
  • IELTS Score 5.5: CEFR Level B2
  • IELTS Score 5: CEFR Level B1
