Nestled in the northwest corner of Sha Tin, a mere 30-minute train ride from downtown Kowloon and a quick 20 minutes from the Lo Wu border, The Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) is renowned for its captivating campus. Spanning 138.4 hectares on a hillside, it is considered Hong Kong’s largest and most visually stunning campus. A significant portion of this expanse is dedicated to lush greenery, carefully integrated across three plateaus, while its landscape is adorned with tasteful structures blending Chinese and Western architectural influences. CUHK’s campus is a cherished sanctuary for diverse flora and fauna, backed by concerted efforts in conservation and enhancement. Moreover, it offers sweeping views of the Tolo Harbour and the nearby mountain ranges, a sight that has stirred poets to praise its harmoniously tranquil and academic atmosphere.
Designed with pedestrians in mind, the campus provides an ideal setting for bird-watching, botany exploration, leisurely strolls, cycling, and hiking. Within CUHK lie some of Hong Kong’s most enjoyable walks. Whether journeying from the MTR University Station to any of the University’s Colleges or elsewhere, one encounters a range of sights: a lily pond, rare trees, a Chinese pavilion, a tree-lined promenade, serene courtyards, a Chinese medicinal garden, notable sculptures, award-winning architectural wonders, and a host of captivating scenes. This collective tapestry of features fosters an environment conducive to both intellectual and personal growth.
To steer the long-term evolution of its campus, CUHK has instituted a comprehensive Campus Master Plan (CMP). Aligned with the University’s educational, research, and learning needs, the CMP lays out a sustainable and forward-thinking blueprint for the growth of the campus up to 2021 and beyond. This blueprint positions CUHK to flourish as a world-class institution that excels in both academic prowess and campus sustainability.
