National Institute of Design – [NID], Bangalore Overview

National Institute of Design Bangalore was inaugurated in the year 2006. Two programs of Design for Digital Experience and Design for Retail Experience were commenced later on in 2008. The institute began with the joint venture of Ministry of Information Technology and Ministry of Commerce and Industry.

The institute offers design courses on different academic levels such as PG and doctorate levels. Doctor of Philosophy in Design course is also available in the institute. On postgraduate level, NID Bangalore offers Master of Design courses in seven specialisations.

The institute is considered as the Institute of National Importance. The institute is also included in the list of top design colleges in India. NID Bangalore stands 3rd among the names of top three National Institutes of Designing.

The institute has several departments of design. There is a separate R & D department for research and PhD programs. Master of Design study is available in NID campus of Bangalore city in disciplines like Animation Film Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Film and Video Communication, Furniture and Interior Design, Graphic Design, Product Design and Textile Design with four years duration. On the other hand, no NID courses offered on the UG level is provided in this institute.

Part-time PhD program for five years is open for candidates working in industry, academia or organisations of research. NID Bangalore fee structure for PG course is 4.40 lakhs.

NID Bangalore Admission Process

All the applicants are admitted to the institute for a particular course on the basis of the NID eligibility and marks scored in the qualifying exam. The qualifying exam required in the institute is the NID DAT. DAT (Design Aptitude Test) has to be passed by the candidates in order to get NID admission in the course of design.

Candidates have to get a certain score in this exam. The candidates failing to get a certain score required for the course are not allowed to join the course. The exam is followed by a group discussion and a personal interview round.

PhD candidates should have a Master’s degree from a  recognised university or bachelor’s degree from any of the NID campus.  Foreign degree-holding foreigners or national students are also eligible for the PhD course. A No Objection Certificate (NOC) issued by the employer of the PhD candidate is considered for seeking admission in the course.

NID Bangalore Results and Cut-off

The institute announces the NID cutoff list after the qualifying exam NID results 2019 is out. The cut-off list is the deciding factor for admission of candidates.

The cut-off list is prepared on the basis of factors like the number of candidates appearing for the exam, the difficulty level of the exam, their highest scores in the exam and the number of seats available in the institute for a particular course.

Candidates have to clear the qualifying exam. They have to cross the cut-off mark for entry into a particular course. NID DAT is the exam that is considered for M Des candidates. M Des candidates have to cross the NID DAT cut-off score. The final selection, however, depends on the combined cut-off score of the interview and the exam.
