The Manipal Academy of Higher Education (MAHE), formerly known as Manipal University, is a private research institute and deemed to be university, which was established in 1956 by Padma Shri awardee and renowned educationist, Dr. Tonse Madhav Ananth Pai in the town of Manipal in Karnataka.
The Sikkim Manipal University is certified under both the ISO 9001:2008 and ISO 14001:2004 mandates. Dr. Ramdas Pai, who is the current chancellor of the university took over the duties from his father since the elder Dr. Pai’s death in 1979. The university is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities.
With headquarters and its largest campus in Manipal, the university has also got off shoot campuses in Karnataka in Mangalore. Manipal University Bangalore is located in Tiger Circle Road, Madhav Nagar. It has sister campuses in Sikkim and there is also a Manipal University Jaipur and offshore campuses in Dubai, UAE and Melaka, Malaysia.
At the time of admission, the students are registered into one of the 19 colleges that fall under MAHE’s purview. There are seven departments which provide 218 programmes in 19 different disciplines ranging from engineering, management, medicine and dentistry to geopolitics, European studies, communication and humanities.
The faculty at Manipal University are perhaps its single biggest USP. Historically, the institution has been famous for their exemplary faculty which includes the likes of Dr. Kumar Sharma and Professor S.N Bhat both of whom have published dozens of academic books and research papers.
The faculty is known for their hands on process of teaching and using real life precedents to help students understand the subject matter.

The Quacquarelli Symonds World University Rankings of 2018 has ranked Manipal University 701-750, worldwide. The same organisation has ranked the university 198 in Asia. Manipal University ranking is 119 among the BRICS (Brazil. Russia, India, China and South Africa) nations by the QS World University Ranking in 2018.
The 2018 survey made by the government organisation, National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) has ranked Manipal 19 among all institutions and 11 among universities across the country.
Manipal University Admissions
Admissions to Manipal University is moderated by the institution’s very own, Manipal Entrance Test (MET). The syllabus for the different degree programmes is set accordingly. Hundreds of thousands of prospective candidates sit for the exams.
The cut-offs are high and the acceptance rate is very low. In 2016, only 4.3% (6,500) of the 1,50,000 applicants found a seat in the university. While admission to most courses is based on the candidate’s score and rank in MET, there are courses such as MBBS, MD and MBA for which the candidates have to sit in all India entrance exams such as NEET for medical aspirants and XAT 2020/MAT for business school prospects.

Manipal University Courses Highlight
- Manipal’s MBBS course is one of the most exclusive courses in the country with an extremely high cutoff. The admission is based on either the candidate’s MUOET or NEET scores. It is also very expensive and costs around INR 50.5 lakhs over the course of five years of study.
- The Manipal Institute of Technology is renowned throughout the country for its faculty and for its placement percentage. The college provides 16 specialisations to choose from. The range of which extends from Mechanical Engineering to Print and Media Technology.
- TAPMI’s MBA programmes in Healthcare Management and Global Business Management was one of the earliest to be launched in the country and the placement percentage of the department is among the highest in the entire university.

Manipal University Placements
The Manipal Academy of Higher Education considers placements to be one of its strong suites. There is an almost cent percent placement in most of the institutions under the university. With over 300 courses offered by Manipal University, students see 1,500 students get jobs via campus interviews.
Recruiters come in long before the students have completed their studies and by the time, they graduate the students have a job of their choice in their hands.
Manipal University Placement Highlights
- In 2017, the placements for MIT featured brands like Amazon, Goldman Sachs and Fiat. The School of Management attracted the attention of brands such as, HDFC, Cafe Coffee Day and ICICI. The pharmaceutical students found themselves placed in the likes of Pfizer, Dr. Reddy’s and the Himalaya Drug Company.
- 2017-18 saw a total of 1,050 offers to the B.Tech students.

Manipal University Results and Cut off
Manipal University hosts the Manipal Entrance Test (MET) every year for conducting admissions to their B.Tech and M.Tech courses. The Manipal University Application process begins in October and ends in March. The exams themselves are conducted in May.
The B.Tech (CSE) course is MIT’s crown jewel and as of 2018, it takes a minimum rank of 1,059 in MET to make the cut off. The candidate’s ranking in MET is dependent on an aggregate of the candidate’s score in MET and the scores they got in their 10+2 exams.
MBA aspirants are expected to score at least 600 in their MAT or if they are taking XAT their score should at least be 85 in order to get into TAPMI.
Most other candidates such as those applying for courses like BA, B.Com or B.Sc have to undertake the Manipal University Online Entrance Test (MUOET) and their cutoff is usually the top 25% in their respective category.
Manipal University Alumni Network
Manipal University boasts an extensive alumni network composed of around 1,00,000 members, worldwide. The most celebrated of all the alumnus are, perhaps, Satya Nadella - the CEO of Microsoft, Rajeev Suri - the CEO of Nokia and the Michelin starred chef, Vikas Khanna.
Other alumni members include, ENT surgeon Dr. R.C Deka - the cochlear implant expert and famous journalists and editors such as, M.V Kamath and M.D Nalapath. The alumni network try to hold interactions between themselves and the current batch of Manipal students so as to help them get in touch with the industry.
The university maintains a large database that contains the contact information of their past students that help the alumnus maintain contact via social media and get in touch, as required.
Manipal University Scholarship
The Manipal Academy of Higher Education provides scholarships for those who are either academically brilliant or with recorded achievements in fields such as sports or art. High rankers in NEET, for example, are exempt from having to pay tuition fees.
Scholarships are also provided to those facing economic limitations. However, to avail the latter, the candidate has to submit their parents’ income tax returns to MAHE. The IT return must show that their income is less than INR 3 lakhs, per annum else the scholarship would not be granted.

Manipal University Campus Facilities
Manipal University has an enormous campus spreading over 313 acres on the plateau town of Manipal. The campus is home to almost 30,000 people including students and staff. Restaurants, hostel blocks, libraries, classrooms and sporting facilities are all located within the borders.
There are other features such as, ATMs, post offices and convenience stores in the campus. The place is wi-fi connected 24*7 and follows ecologically allied practices to ensure a green and clean ambience. The campus is divided into 2 blocks - Medical and Engineering.
