Earlier known as ‘Malabar University’, Kannur University was founded in the year 1996. It began functioning on the 2nd of March in the same year. The inauguration of the university was done by the then Chief Minister of Kerala. The university has six campuses at present and aims at providing higher education in the areas of Kasargod and Kannur.
These campuses are Dr P.K. Rajan Memorial Campus, Kannur, Palathadam, Mananthavady Campus, Kasargod Campus, Payyanur Campus, Mangattuparamba Campus and Thalassery Campus. The UGC approved university is also a member of AIU.
The Nileshwaram campus or Dr. P.K. Ranjan campus has departments of Malayalam, MBA, IT Education, Molecular Biology and Hindi while Mananthavady campus includes the Department of Zoology and Rural & Tribal Sociology.
Kasargod campus provides departments related to IT Education, Indian Languages and Management Studies and on the other hand, departments of Geography, Visual and Fine Arts, Chemical Sciences and Pure and Applied Chemistry are available in Swami Anandatheertha campus, which is located in Payyanur campus.
Mangattuparamba has such 12 departments against the Thalassery campus which includes only nine departments. Kannur University offers many UG and PG programs in disciplines like Management, Commerce, Arts, Fine Arts, Computer Applications, and so on.
Distance education is also provided in the university. Prof. Gopinath Ravindran is the current vice-chancellor of the university, and other faculty heads of several departments have performed their roles very well in making the university a successful venture.

Courses offered and Fee structure.
Kannur University offers two UG, 11 PG, one integrated, one PG Diploma and two doctorate courses. The university provides degrees in Business Administration, Education, Arts, Sciences, Commerce, Journalism, Zoology, Microbiology, Geography, Physics Advanced Materials, MLISc, Law, Computer Application etc. with a duration between one to five years.
BA+LLB is the only integrated course available in the university for full-time and the duration of the course is five years.
Undergraduate courses
The university offers several bachelor courses at the undergraduate level of study. For instance, there is a total of around 20 courses, starting from regional languages to subjects like History, Economics, Islamic History and many more.

Postgraduate courses
The PG course provided in the university include MSc (Master of Sciences), MPEd (Master of Physical Education), MA (Master of Arts), MCJ (Master of Communication & Journalism) , MLISc (Master of Library & Information Science), MCA (Master of Computer Application) and LLM (Master of Law). MSc includes specializations in Mathematics, Statistics, Computer Science, Medical Microbiology, Biochemistry, Medical Laboratory and Clinical and Counselling Psychology.
MA is available in disciplines like Anthropology, Applied Economics, Rural & Tribal Sociology, History & Heritage Studies etc. Environmental Studies, Molecular Biology, Applied Zoology etc. are branches of M Tech. The duration of these courses is between two and three years. In terms of fees, the MBA course fee is Rs. 52,790 against MSc fee which almost half of it.
MA course fee at the university is quite affordable which is Rs. 14,550 but LLM costs around Rs. 28,670. Lateral course in MCA has its price around Rs. 38,800 whereas M.LIB.I.SC. a fee is Rs.23,270. MCJ course is also offered on a decent rate of Rs. 39,580. However, MCA fee goes a little higher around Rs. 58,000. Besides, UG and PG courses, Kannur University also offers Distance Education programme for the students who are working and cannot attend a regular class. Kannur University Distance Education courses are conducted through the School of Distance Education.

Admission Process
Admission to UG courses requires a passing score in HSC examination that is accepted by the university for UG admission. Some conditions are to be matched to become eligible for entry into the university for a particular course. Bachelor degree courses are joined in Kannur University based on marks scored in the 10+2 examination. BEd and LLB candidates can join the courses on having a degree in any discipline.
For admission into Kannur University MBA course, students have to get a bachelor degree along with a valid scorecard of CAT, MAT etc. For PG course, an undergraduate degree in the same discipline is required, but for PhD candidates, 55% aggregate marks are required in the master’s degree. After all these conditions are matched, candidates have to take and pass an entrance test conducted by the Kannur University.
- For admission in UG course, the university takes students based on their merits in the higher secondary examination along with a scorecard in the state-level exams, required for some course.
- For admission in PG course, marks in UG courses and entrance exam’s scores are considered.

Kannur University, along with providing good quality education, also saves the efforts of the students by offering excellent job opportunities for them. Companies participating in the job fest are Yodlee, Zopper, Wipro, Sapient, Oracle, Tech Mahindra etc.
In 2015 batch, the placement percentage of Kannur University was 39.1% that stayed around 35% in 2016 too. However, in 2017, a sudden fall in placement percentage was seen. The highest salary package offered in 2017 was 10 LPA against 8.50 LPA provided in 2015.
Results and Cut-offs
A specified percentile has to be crossed by the candidates seeking admission in the university. Kannur University decides the cut-off percentile after the result of the qualifying exams are out. UG and PG cut-off list is declared after some factors are taken into consideration as a number of appearing candidates, difficulty level of the exam, scores in the qualifying exam and availability of seats in the university for a particular course.

Scholarships
Kannur University scholarships are offered to meritorious and deserving students who are engaged in full-time courses in the university. Scholarships are offered in the form of fee exemption, remission etc. AMAT scholarships are also given to the students with good academic ranks.
Scholarships for MBA program candidates have to meet the eligibility criteria that includes a bachelor’s degree with minimum 50% aggregate.
The required percentage goes a little down to 45% in case of SC/ST candidates. Candidates who score a high rank in the qualifying exams like CAT/MAT/GMAT/AMAT also become eligible for these scholarships. Candidates must belong to Indian nationality to get benefits of these scholarships.

Mananthavady campus has an open-air auditorium with large seating capacity and area of 1,147 sq. m.
