IIT Kanpur offers B.Tech and B.S. degrees in Science and Technology over a four-year period. Students with high JEE Advanced scores will be considered for B.Tech and B.S programs. Both the B.Tech and B.S programs are only available in full-time regular mode.
Counseling is used to determine final admission (JoSAA). IIT Kanpur offers B.Tech in ten specialisations and BS in four.
Eligibility for IIT Kanpur B.Tech/B.S
Candidates applying for the B.Tech/B.S. program must have completed 10+2 level education from a recognized board and be in the top 20% of their respective board. They must also have a valid JEE Advanced score.
IIT Kanpur Admission Criteria for B.Tech/B.S. Selection
- Candidates must register on the JoSAA website. Following receipt of the Application Number and Password, the candidate should begin filling out the application form with personal and academic information.
- They must select the desired specialisations offered by IIT Kanpur. Once the choice filling is over, they need to lock the choices and take a hard copy printout of the application.
- Students will be assigned options based on the cut-off established by the Central Counselling Board. If the candidate wishes to confirm the allotment after it has been made, they can Freeze the allotment.

Procedures for Applying for B.Tech/B.S. Admission
- Visit the official JEE Advanced website and fill out the Online Application Form with your Email ID and Mobile Number.
- Take note of the system-generated Application Number that appears on the screen.
- Create a password, as well as a Security Question and its answer.
- After creating a password and recording the application number, the candidate can login again and begin filling out the application form.
- Enter your personal and academic information as requested, and upload scanned images of your photographs and signature.
- Pay the application fee with a debit or credit card, net banking, UPI, or PAYTM. Only after successful payment confirmation will the application be considered informed, and the candidate will be able to print the Confirmation Page.
- Keep a hard copy print of the application form for future use.
Note:
At the end of the sixth semester, B.Tech/B.S students can apply for the M.Tech/M.S/MBA programme in their same or different department. Dual Degree Programs are those that combine the UG and PG programmes mentioned above.
Students must have no backlogs and a minimum CPI of 6.0 to be eligible for this. However, this is subject to the availability of seats in the desired PG programme.
IIT Kanpur M.Tech and M.S (Research) Admission 2024
IIT Kanpur offers a full-time regular M.Tech programme in 13 specialisations. It also provides an M.S. by research programme in nine specialisations. Both programmes are two years in length. IIT Kanpur course admissions to M.Tech programmes is based on students’ performance in the GATE Examination, which is followed by counselling and an interview.
M.Tech. and M.S. from IIT Kanpur (Research) Eligibility
Candidates for M.Tech and M.S by Research must have a Bachelor’s degree in Engineering/Science or a Master’s degree in Science with a minimum aggregate of 55% marks/5.5 CPI GATE score.
Candidates with a B.Tech/B.S (Four Year) degree from an IIT with a minimum overall CPI of 6.5 and a minimum CPI of 8.0 in the last two years in B.Tech/B.S are exempt from the GATE requirement (Four Year)
Applicants with a B.Sc. (3-year) or equivalent with a minimum of 75 percent marks/7.5 CPI may also be considered for admission to MS (Research) in CSE.
IIT Kanpur Admission Criteria for M.Tech and M.S (Research) Selection
- IIT Kanpur course admissions to the M.Tech and M.S research programs will be based on GATE scores.
- Candidates for the M.Tech, M.S (Research) program must go through CCMT Counselling. They must first register on the official CCMT website.
- Fill out the application form with your personal and academic information, and pay the registration fee (INR 2200/- for General/OBC and INR 1700/- for SC/ ST/ PwD).
- Begin entering the desired options. Add and lock the options in decreasing order of preference.
- Seats will be assigned during the rounds of counseling. Candidates must obtain an allotment letter and report to the institute. On the day of admission, they must bring the original documents with them.

M.Sc. from IIT Kanpur and a Dual Degree (M.Sc-Ph.D) Eligibility
Candidates for M.Sc and M.Sc-Ph.D programmes must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Science with a relevant specialisation. A candidate who has completed a B.Sc in Physics, for example, will only be eligible for an M.Sc in Physics.
Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree with at least 55 percent (50 percent for SC/ST) from a recognised university.
Candidates must have a valid IIT JAM entrance examination score. Candidates will not be able to participate in counselling, WAT, or PI unless they have a valid score.
IIT Kanpur Admission Criteria for M.Sc and Dual Degree (M.Sc-Ph.D) Selection
- The M.Sc and M.Sc-Ph.D programmes will be selected based on the merit of IIT JAM scores, followed by a written test and an interview at IIT Kanpur.
- Candidates must register on the CCMN website using their IIT JAM score. They must enter the requested information, JAM scores, valid choices, and submit the form online.
- Following submission, an OTP will be sent to the candidate’s mobile phone in order to generate a Permanent Identifier (PID). Relogin with this PID and password to check the status of the application.
- If you are chosen, please download the allotment letter and report to IIT Kanpur on the dates and times specified for the Written Test and Interview.
- The results will be announced on the official website and personally informed to the selected students within 30 days.

The Application Procedure
- Go to the official website.
- Fill out the form by entering the candidate’s name, email address, and phone number. Make a password for yourself as well.
- When the registration form is submitted, an Enrolment ID is sent to the mobile number.
- Re-login with this enrolment ID and enter the details such as academic, personal, paper selection, test centre, and so on.
- Pay the application fee and submit the application form online.
- Check the application form’s status later to see if it was accepted or rejected.
- Later, candidates will be able to download their admit cards from the same login portal.
Note:
Final-year students may also apply for the programme because they will be granted provisional admission. Final admission will be granted once the candidate shows proof of having taken final examinations on the day of registration.
IIT Kanpur M.Des Admission 2024
IIT Kanpur also offers a full-time Masters programme in Design (M.Des). Admission to the programme is based on a CEED/GATE score. Candidate must have a Bachelor’s Degree in Design specialisation. Final admission to these programmes is determined by counselling and an interview.
Candidates with a background in Fine Arts or Interior Design are ineligible for the programme. Final-year students are also eligible to apply if they present their original degree-related certificates before September.
The institute will conduct another screening round based on the CEED scores. If such a test is conducted, the shortlisted candidates will be notified. IIT Kanpur offers a five-year Bachelor’s-Dual Master’s Degree programme that allows students to earn both a bachelor’s and a master’s degree. The Dual-Degree programme at the institute is divided into three categories:
Category A: Both degrees are in the same department/discipline in this category. The institute offers two combinations in this category, which are as follows:

Criteria for Dual Degree Eligibility at IIT Kanpur
Candidates must meet the following requirements to be considered for admission to the IIT Kanpur Dual-Degree programmes:
10+2 from a recognised board of education with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as compulsory subjects.
Students must have a minimum CPI of 6.0 when applying for a dual degree programme in order to continue with the PG portion of the programme.
IIT Kanpur Admission Criteria for Dual Degree Selection
Candidates are chosen based on their JEE Main score, which is then followed by JoSAA counselling. At the time of counselling, the institute does not offer a dual degree programme. Students can, however, apply for the dual degree programme after their fifth, sixth, and seventh semesters. There may be a written test or an interview in the respective department for students applying under categories B and C.
IIT Kanpur Dual Degree Application Procedure
- Students may apply for the Category A dual degree programme after their fifth, sixth, or seventh semester.
- Students in categories B and C may apply only once after their sixth semester.
- The DoSAA office will accept applications for Dual Degrees in all three categories twice a year, in April and November.
- Eligible students should submit their applications on the prescribed Dual Degree application form to the Chairperson, SUGC.
- Completed application forms must be submitted to the DoSAA office’s UG section by the deadline.
- Completed application forms received by the deadline will be processed by the DoSAA office and forwarded to the appropriate departments after the semester’s results are announced.
- Departments must submit their results to the DoSAA office by the day before registration for the next semester begins.

Financial Assistance: For Ph.D. students, the corresponding financial assistance (for Engg./Sciences/Social Sciences) is INR 25,000 for the first two years and then increases to INR 28,000 for the next two years.
