The JEE Main 2015 Exam is just around the corner. With the release of the admit cards for this exam, your heartbeats must have increased even more. You must be wondering about how to prepare for its various sections. In this article, let us understand how to prepare for the Chemistry section of this exam.
Chemistry is a big mystery to most of us. The chemical reactions, bonds, solutes and solutions make our knees wobble. But it is not that difficult. Know the elements, understand their nature, and know their reactions with other elements and the job becomes easier. As you all know, chemistry is divided into three parts – Physical, Organic and Inorganic.
Physical chemistry includes chemical kinetics, thermodynamics, etc. Properly study the sequence of reactions. Any intermediate step could be asked from it. Know the thermodynamics’ laws. A special attention should be given to the units. You would often come across questions where you need to convert some quantity to SI units. You must have solved many sums for your theory paper; nothing different is asked here. Chemical kinetics might be a bit tricky to understand. Make it a point to learn the standard equations well and learn the nature of various reactions and their rate so that you can easily recall them.
Organic chemistry is a piece of cake if you thoroughly understand the nature of reagents and learn the kind of reaction that they cause. For example, KOH causes dehydrohalogenation, Grignard’s reagent makes carbon-carbon bonds, etc. This is the easiest way to remember these reactions. Otherwise you will have to mug up all of them individually, which is risky. Note down the reactions and practice rewriting them so that you do not forget the conditions required for them. The names of the compounds are equally important; so learn their common names as well. Likewise, know the names of the reactions thoroughly as questions may not mention the formula every time.
In Inorganic chemistry, know the solutes, solvents and types of bonds thoroughly. You must practice rewriting them till you have completely mastered them. Otherwise, you may get confused and may jumble up everything. Draw flowcharts. Try to depict the reactions pictorially. A picture is easier to recall than mere text. The heart of chemistry lies in the periodic table. One must know the periodic table by heart, including the d-block and f-block elements. It helps to guess the chemical nature of elements as they are grouped together accordingly. Know the properties down the group and across the period. Make funny mnemonics to remember the elements.
Chemistry is a subject which you should learn from the start itself and not at the last minute.
Understand it thoroughly and invent tricks to remember it. You will surely enjoy it at the end and ace the test.
All the Best!
