In and With

When 'a' is used before pencil, with is used. When 'a' doesn't come before pencil, it is considered an uncountable noun and 'in' is used.
Ellipsis in Preposition
In a sentence, when joining two or more words, same preposition is used only if that preposition is appropriate for both the words- for example;
1. We should prevent damage to and theft of railway property.
Here two Nouns (damage and theft) are joined with and. We know that after damage 'to' is used and after theft 'of' is used, above sentence cannot be written in below fashion;
1. We should prevent damage and theft of railway property. (incorrect)
2. He was neither ashamed of nor sorry for his deeds.

In above sentences for 'are to write', 'must write or have to write' can also be used and for 'are to arrange', 'must arrange or have to arrange' can be used but the sense of the sentences will change, using must it becomes harsh and 'have to' shows helplessness.

The structure of some sentences is like below;
Subject + was/were + Present Infinitive/Perfect Infinitive
1. He was to come.
2. They were to marry.
These types of sentences represent that, in future the work was not done according to plan.

When we change Exclamatory sentences from Direct narration to Indirect Narration, in place of said, we use exclaimed with joy/exclaimed with surprise/exclaimed with appreciation etc.. as per the meaning of Reported speech. We use that in place of inverted commas and in reported speech we use helping verb after subject and remove exclamatory words.
Examples;
He said, "Alas! I am ruined.'
He exclaimed with sorrow that he was ruined.
They said, "Hurrah! We have won the match."
They exclaimed with joy that they had won the match.
She said, "Alas! We can't achieve success.''
She exclaimed with sorrow that they couldn't achieve success.
The caption said to soldiers, "Bravo! You have fought well."
The caption applauded the soldiers saying that they had fought well.
