[OFFICIAL] 2019-2021 IIM Rohtak Admission Queries and Discussions

Here's the interview experience of Nikhil Maheshwari, a first year student of IIM Rohtak. Hope you find this helpful. If you have any other queries or you want us to make videos or write articles on any topic, feel free to comment below. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=KfVej--eBqs&feature=youtu.be

PI question of the day.

Tell me something about yourself.

This answer can make or break your interview. The interviewer doesn’t want to know the facts only, he/she can read that from the application form. The main motive is to gauge the candidate’s confidence, tone and how he/she communicates.

Dos:
•Follow an ascending or descending order. That means either start with your schooling, college, work ex etc or the reverse order for the same.
•Skim through the achievements rather than details. Be selective and use the best achievements.
•Include some personal details and hobbies, your interview might turn out to be really interesting

Don’ts:
•Use words you don’t know the meaning of.
•Make it unnecessarily long.
•Brag. The interview wants a candidate who is ready to learn rather someone who knows it all.
•Wing it. This is the most important question, prepare well for it.

PI Question of the day

Your strengths and weaknesses. / What is different about you than the rest of the candidates? / Why should we select you?

Sometimes its very difficult to talk about one’s strengths and weaknesses when asked directly. A commonly asked question in the interview, the key here is listing your qualities with a past example. Some pointers to remember for this question:

1. Have an example ready for each strength and weakness as there might be counter questions and discussions.

2. Take a positive trait and portray it as a weakness. Example, attention to too much details.

3. Be realistic with the strengths, mention the points which goes with your personality. Remember that the panelists have a lot of experience and they can judge if you are telling the truth to a large extent.

P.S. Keep hustling!

How to handle questions you don’t know answers to.

Rule 1: Calm Down: It’s OK to not be aware of answers to questions. Don’t freak out, you don’t want to throw out answers without thinking. Take deep breaths, think through the question to find the right answer.

Rule 2: Don’t make stuff up: Your interviewer can see right through you. You don’t want your entire interview to be affected by one answer.

Rule 3: Don’t say “I don’t know”: You should not tell the interviewer you don’t know the answer off the bat. This gives impression you are not even trying. They basically want to test how you will handle situations you are not well versed with.

Rule 4: Tell your interviewer what you do know: If you do have some knowledge of the question, then tell your interviewer what you know and how you think the problem should be approached. Maybe saying everything out loud can start the process of figuring out the problem.

Rule 5: Tell them how you would find the answer: Sometimes your thought process is more important than actual answer. They want to see how you will approach and handle a problem using idea of your own. Also, while you are trying to find the solution, you can admit to not knowing certain parts, this way you come off as being honest.

Rule 6: Know the right time to come clean: Although we mentioned not admitting to the interviewer that you don't know the answer, there is an exception to this rule. If the answer is something that you will only know through memorization, such as a definition of the word, then it's probably best to admit that you don't know the answer, as it may be impossible to figure it out independently. Here's what you can tell the interviewer: "It's a good question, but I'm sorry, I don't have the answer off the top of my head. I will be sure to follow up with the answer after the interview." Or use words like “Though I have read it but not able to recall at the moment. What I can recall right now is …..”

Rule 7: Be confident: Confidence is the key. Even if you don’t know answers, your interview is not going in the right direction, even if it is a stress interview, be confident. You may not be able to display all your knowledge, all your qualities, but one thing you can clearly convey to them, that you are confident and can function really well under pressure.

P.S. Keep hustling!!

I have mentioned work experience till July 2018 in my CAP form. Even in the space provided to enter from when to till when we worked, I had mentioned from Nov 2016 to July 2018. Do I need to mention till Jan 2019 in the form, If so what should I do now??

Interview tips-

1. Follow the business formal way of dressing.

2. Reach the location at least 15 mins before to settle down before the process.

3. Keep documents in one file to avoid confusion.

4. Take a deep breath before entering the room, it’s going to be okay!

5. Make the most of the ‘tell me about yourself’ question. It sets the tone for the interview.

6. Maintain eye contact with the panelists, use voice modulations and be humble throughout.

7. If you are confused about an answer, ask for a minute to collect your thoughts and then answer.

8. If you don't know anything about an answer, tell that to the panelist. You are not expected to know everything.

9. Read about the college. You should know basic things like the programs they are offering, famous Alumni, etc

10. Have some basic questions ready for the interviewer if they ask at the end. Relevant questions show you are interested and well prepared.

11. Wear a smile at all times. It certainly helps!

12. Get proper sleep a night before and eat light but filling that day.

13. And practice, practice. Use a mirror or any friend or family.
