lehmanbrothershereicome Saysyou need to put in close to 300 hours of study for L1 if u a non fin person.....and along with B school curriculum i am not too sure how many manage to do that...cos the first year is very hectic in most b schools....and am not sure about showing the L1 in resume for summers......since the exam is on a sunday it does not clash with any exam i believe....maybe some lectures...which i am sure u can manage.....
Hi thanx for the info,
i have some other specific queries...i hope you can help me out..
i am planning to study for CFA during may and june and then decide
if i will be giving it this december..
are there any specific parts that i should start of studying so that it helps
me out in the first year of mba...
are there any classes that teach the basics of accountancy and other CFA
portion..and are they any good...
and do you have to slog at the end..cause i am confident of completing
a decent portion in may -june but with MBA to revise the entire portion
during december ...i dont know if it will be possible..
well I do understand basics of economics but the CFA and accountancy part..i'm
a complete novice...it would be of great help if you could help me out as i dont want to waste the 2 months i have before i join my mba...
i also know a few other people in the same position on the forum...thats why i put
the query on the forum and not pmed you...

Well if you want to test out then you should if possible get hold of CFA L1 notes by schewers and read through the FSA (Financial Statement Analyis) part...this is my personal opinion others might beg to differ....you can then back it up with some readings on derivatives et al...and economics if u like....
FSA is wat u would be learning in finance in school i believe....to learn basics of accounting nothing better than the commerce books for first year after 12th guess they cover the basics....
disclaimer: these are my personal opinions views of others may differ...

Hey dude, you can aaram se complete cfa L1 in dec alongwith your mba studies. I am giving the L1 this june, and will be joining NMIMS after that. I am through almost 1/3rd the portion till now. Its not difficult. I suggest you complete small topics like- equity analysis, ethics, portfolio mgmt, derivaties, alternate investments before your mba begins. The major portion of Financial Statement Ananlysis will anyway be a part of I Trimester, so it will be easy to do after that. Level I is simple, tension mat lo.
As for the classes, I believe there is no need. Self-study from Schweser notes is enough. Still, if you want to explore that option, Munira Lokhandwala conducts classes in Mumbai for CFA. You can find an interview by her on homepage of PG, you will get more details of her classes there.
Go ahead and buy yourself the Schweser Notes and start off! 2-3 mnths of regular prep should be enough
Hi guys,
First of all thnks to all the guys who have been doing an excellent job all this while some of them now and some of them previously but this is one thread which has cemented my decision to go on and do what I wanted to do. Guys like CTD, archbishop earlier have done extensive research on the subject and enlightened all the other ppl with their research. Though I had been a silent onlooker to the thread but have studied it since the start and one who has a look at this one thread from the start can tell that YES this is brilliant credit goes to you all guys who have been keeping it alive with all the info and guidance and posting ur researches here for all to benefit.
I remember sometime back that CTD had thrown an idea of developing a website on CFA seeing the success of this thread I wud say a gud idea and wud do gud community service. I am also an IT professional and somehow down the line in all these years have realised tht finance is my interest and so hence was searching for options like doing MBA or something else but this option has prompted me to go ahead with my plans as I was a a bit hesitant to change the fields but seeing so many engrs and all kinda guys goin with CFA i took a sigh of relief.
Now after studying all the posts and all the info posted by all the guys here I have one point to raise here. First of all I wanna say to CTD and all old guys that thye have been down and out of the action on this thread so I ask them to join back and be active as ur inputs make it more lively and also informative and can make it more and more fruitful.
Now further to that I would ask the guys who have cleared the L1 exam recently to provide some strategy for studying to the prospective guys who are studying and who will be taking the exam this year. Now what this will do with the exp of you guys is that it will help the others like me to prepare and focus in a proper manner as you are the guys who have done this and have been through successfully. Provide us your feedback as to how do we make a planned study, what to do study first what to do study last what to emphasize on more. Your inputs and light on this wud help the future candidates pass it a little more easily.
I have seen in some earlier posts also some people asking the same thing as I am but there was no reply. I know everybody of us is involved in something or the other and v r busy with our lives but take some time out for the sake of fellow future CFAs as you have been doing all this while devote sometime and v all will b grateful to u always at least I wud be .
Cheers 😃

Hey Vishal,
To answer ur first part if you have CFA L1 cleared bfore ur summer placements then it is goin to definitely help you out in that.
Now the answer to the second part I am also looking out for

Does anybody has a clue to that????:(

Any sequence is fine as long as you feel comfortable doing it,it does not matter which book you start or end with ,although I would advise you to do ethics last as most of the questions are very similar to the cse studies in the CFA Handbook it is best to do this part in the end and have it fresh in your memory.

As far as i have read on this and other forums...order of study does not make a difference as long as u know the material.....
my 200th post

Thanks guys for the input but guys like me who dont know "A,b,C,d....." 😞 of finance, what should be the course of action of theirs. I mean to ask that whether they should study something thts easy to grasp so tht it can build up their confidence or start with the the tough ones first so tht u find everything easy.
And + which topics you guys find easy and which ones tough??
Cheers

Now that i have shamelessly thanked you for that post, i might as well write a reply

Ok enuff drama. Im glad more people are participating here. I was away for a coupla months and when i returned to my favourite thread, i was quite disillusioned to find that this place had degenerated into a message board for ppl hunting for xeroxes and calcis. Discussions like "where can i get xyz" and "hey can you give me pqr" and "does anyone has abc" etc (i just ran out of variables, actually

Whatever happened to that CFA study group guys? It comes up every now and then and drowns away. Are any of you guys studying in groups? Invite me!! Since im out of the CFA scene for a while, i havent been posting, but im following the thread secretly.
