JEE MAIN 2020: Application Correction, Syllabus, Exam Date

Are rank predictors any good for JEE students

The grind is not over yet for students who have appeared for JEE Mains 2016. Though the scores have been announced, JEE authorities are yet to declare the ranks secured by lakhs of candidates who have qualified for the next level, JEE Advanced. The rank scored by a candidate will determine his/her eligibility for a particular institute during the allocation process. The students across the country have been checking various sites to predict their ranks. But are these websites accurate in their calculations? PaGaLGuY finds out.

"I have scored 146 in JEE Mains 2016 and expecting 87% in the Board exams. I am trying various sites to predict my rank to know the colleges where I will be eligible of securing a seat," says Utasha Singh, from Delhi. She is not the only one. There are countless others who have been predicting their ranks on various websites. Ironically, the ranks predicted by the sites are hardly ever close to the ranks actually secured by the students. "I too had fallen into this trap when I had appeared for JEE. Unfortunately, there was a huge difference in the rank predictors and my actual rank. I have discouraged my younger brother from checking them," says Utkansh Bajaj, a second-year student at IIT Roorkee.

Are you wondering as to why JEE ranks have not been declared yet? If yes, then it is because the Central Board of Secondary Education is yet to declare the Class 12 result. The JEE rank is calculated by giving 40% weightage to the marks scored in Class 12 Board exams.

So, even if various states have declared their results, JEE will release the ranks only after CBSE result is out. That's not all, due to the difference in state boards and CBSE pattern, the score have to be normalised after which the ranks will be declared.

But students are an eager and anxious lot, and they can't stop logging in to these websites to predict their ranks.

After JEE rank predictors, students fret over college cut-offs

An engineering aspirant's woes seem unending. After clearing JEE Mains, there's still a lot to worry. And to add to it, the next level of exam, JEE Advanced, is just around the corner.

If first a student was anxious to know the rank that he/she has secured on an all-India level, the next big issue taxing an aspirant's mind now is the cut-off at various engineering institutes. Once again, none of these processes will move forward no matter how much the students and parents fret over it. "I have been incessantly checking various sites to get an idea of the cut-offs at different institutes. I want to be prepared well in advance with a list of places where I will be eligible to secure a seat," says Deepak Panchal, from Mumbai.

Panchal isn't alone in the cut-off hunt. The social media and other discussion forums are flooded with queries from students about cut-offs at various institutes and the branch they would be eligible for admission after the ranks are announced.

It's no longer only about a student's preference of a particular branch for his undergrad degree but what matters more is his/her eligibility for the same. "My son should get into a good institute. That's my primary concern. Ultimately where he gets the degree from is important," says Anil Goenka, whose son scored 178 in JEE Mains 2016.

With JEE Advanced barely two weeks' away, many feel this is nothing but a sheer wastage of time. PaGaLGuY spoke to a few engineering students who were of the opinion that students should instead focus on their preparation and not on the branch or the institute where they would be eligible to get admission.

They told that this approach would matter only in the short term. "Skill and what you learn is more important. As clichéd as it may sound, the brand name of the institute will not take you far, as will your knowledge," said Abhishek Jha of IIT Kanpur. He is now working on a start-up idea with his friends.

Quite a few others echoed his thought. Another student added, "When you graduate with an engineering degree from an NIT or any other institute, which is not top-ranked, focus on developing your skill. The name of your institute will not get you a job but your knowledge and expertise will surely help you stay ahead of others."

                            Interview with Aman Goel

When did you first start writing a blog? Why do you write only about JEE Preparation?

After the JEE results, many students started asking me questions about how I prepared for JEE, the books which I used etc. It was cumbersome to answer all the questions on Facebook or on phone. So, I thought of writing an article and just sharing the link. This would be beneficial to students as well as me. This is how the blog started.

JEE is a super set for all other exams. Preparing for JEE Advanced prepares you for different Olympiads, KVYP etc.

Have you thought taking up writing as a career?

No, I don't enjoy writing. I am very interested in core computer science and would like to pursue it in future also.

If not engineering, then which career would you choose?

I would have joined my father's business and settled down in Kanpur.

Why an engineer and not a writer?

I took up engineering as a choice. My parents gave me the freedom to take up any profession. So,

Any support from IITB for your blog?

No. even if I write about them, they won't endorse it.

What after engineering?

You like Organic Chemistry. Why? Is it because it is scoring subject?

Yes, it is a scoring subject. My chemistry teacher recommended me a book by L G Wade. It is a very interesting book. It gives you an insight into organic chemistry without you having to memorize things.

How much time and energy is devoted to the blog on a daily basis?

In the first year, it took up a lot of my time. Now, I have a team of three 'freshies' who followed my blogs. They volunteered to write for me and I agreed.

Students do so much to become engineers and then sell do MBA and sell soaps. Comment

(Laughs) I see many reasons why this happens. Many take up engineering not knowing what it is about. Secondly, many have to opt for a branch which they are not interested in. But the competition here is so much that they are motivated enough to do better even after IIT. Thirdly, if a student has not got a good placement, they will definitely like to learn more skills to get a job of their choice.

Personally, I did think of giving the CAT after I had cracked the JEE, one of the toughest exams. I am sure now that I want to pursue pure computer science.

Why do you not encourage aspirants to also think of other professions or/and take it easy if paper does not go well?

I don't think JEE is the end of everything. The challenges we face in life are very different from JEE. It is important to take things in the right spirit. You should not judge yourself on the basis of the exam. I think, it is important for parents to not pressurise their children to get into an IIT.

I know a senior who did not get admission into an IIT. He took up B.Tech in Information Technology in an NIT, cut offs from which are lower than computer science. He worked very hard and got an offer from Google.

How do deal with people when they ask silly or difficult questions? Do you skirt the question or answer everything that comes your way?

It happens a lot. I have stopped replying to them about six-seven months ago. Many students ask questions not relevant to the topic of the post. The idea of the blog was that I need not repeat things. But I am forced to repeat, so I stopped replying. I answer only if a comment is in the relevant section. Some come up with a book and ask me a review of how good it is. They don't realize that I have not read all the books available in the market. The blog is about how an IITian prepared. It is not meant to replace teachers or the hard work.

Is it necessary to give KVPY?

It is not necessary. It is completely out of interest that I applied. I made bubbling mistakes and got a bad rank.

What do you think of the time between Mains and Advanced? What should aspirants be doing besides studying?

It is a crucial time. It is expected that the syllabus is complete by now. You might be weak at some chapters and strong at some. Revision is most important now. It is an ideal time to spend 12 hours a day studying. Solve more questions on topics you are weak, but don't neglect the strong areas. Students should solve more questions.

There is a lot of uncertainty about the pattern of JEE Advanced exam. What is your advice to students?

Students should not prepare for a pattern. They should be prepared for surprises. Life is full of surprises, so take this opportunity to learn how to face them.

Don't have a PAN card or Aadhaar card or passport...can I use the cbse admit card as identity proof....

Hi

I am new to this engineering section of Pagalguy.

One of my friends has got a score of 160 in JEE Main.

He is also expecting a good score in 12th CBSE Board exams (80%+ would be a fair estimate).

Considering these two scores, which colleges is he likely to get admission into?

Also, more importantly, in which colleges he can still apply?

And, what has been the trend of ranks getting admissions in colleges like PEC, Thapar, NITs?

Any info on the above questions in form of a relevant link or comment will be much appreciated.

TIA

Unhappy students of NITs, IIITs and GFTIs to take JEE Advanced again

Every year, many engineering aspirants aim to secure a seat at the Indian Institutes of Technology or the Indian School of Mines. But unfortunately, their low rank in JEE Advanced makes them eligible for admission in the National Institutes of Technology (NITs), the Indian Institute of Information Technology (IIITs) and other Government Funded Technical Institutions (GFTIs). For such students, JEE Advanced brings as a ray of hope. By appearing again in the exam, they get a chance to better score, improve rank and make it to their dream Institute.

Several students had accepted their seats through the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSSA) process last year but were an unhappy lot. Selvi Durai, a student of NIT Puducherry, took the decision of re-appearing for the JEE advanced this year. "We had organised protests for better infrastructure, but it didn't help. I saw my seniors suffer; I don't want to go through the same ordeal," she said.

A student from NIT Srinagar, which has been in the news for all the wrong reasons in the last few months, shared the same concern. For him, JEE Advanced is a ticket to make it to a better institute this time around. "I was shocked with whatever happened here. My parents also support my decision to reappear for JEE Advanced," he said. He also added that though this move would mean wasting a year, he would still prefer to opt out of NIT Srinagar.

However, it is not as easy as it sounds. There are certain eligibility conditions listed out by JEE authorities for students who are taking JEE Advanced. Students can check the link to know them. Students, who have accepted admission to an IIT or ISM are, however, cannot sit for JEE Advanced once again. A student from IIT Tirupati, on the condition anonymity, said that she too would have like to benefit from this opportunity. "I was disappointed with my choice. I wish this would be extended to students of IITs as well." she said.

Blogger Aman Goel to JEE aspirants: You should not judge yourself on the basis of the exam

Aman Goel is a third-year Computer Science and Engineering student at IIT, Bombay. He writes a popular blog, where he guides students about cracking the Joint Entrance Exam (JEE) for admission to IITs. He is also the most viewed writer on Quora under the topic "JEE". Aman is currently doing his internship at Rubrik, a cloud computing company based in California.

Aman spoke to PaGaLGuY about his experience of blogging, cracking JEE and engineering in general.

When did you first start writing a blog? Why do you write only about JEE preparation?

After JEE results, many students started asking me questions about how I prepared for JEE, the books I used, etc. It was a cumbersome task to answer all these issues on Facebook or over the phone. So, I thought of writing an article and just sharing the link. It would be beneficial for both, students and me alike. This is how the blog started. JEE is a superset for all other exams. Preparing for JEE Advanced prepares you for different Olympiads, Kishore Vaigyanik Protsahan Yojana (KVPY) scholarship, etc.

Have you thought taking up writing as a career?

Solving more questions is key to tackle uncertain pattern of JEE Advanced

Clearing the JEE Advanced exam is the next step that aspirants wanting to go to IITs have to tackle. The most differentiating aspect of JEE Advanced is the uncertain pattern. Rishiraj Singhal, a student of NIT, Jalandhar said, "The characteristic feature of JEE Advanced exam is the uncertain pattern of papers."

This uncertainty is about marks that each question carries in both papers. The strategy that most students use while tackling any exam is based on marks that each answer gives them. This helps them optimize their strong areas and clear cut-offs.

Prof. R L Trikha, Director, FIITJEE said, "Solving more and more questions on topics which a student finds difficult is best way to tackle Advanced."

Sheshansh Aggarwal, who was AIR 58 in JEE Advanced 2015 agrees that working on the weaker areas is the way forward. About topics which he found difficult, Sheshansh said, "I was weak at chemistry, so I dedicated one week for it."

About practising questions, Sheshansh said, "It is important that our concepts are clear. Otherwise there is no point in solving questions." Sheshansh added, "I also observed that JEE is asking more questions about concepts rather than those which deal with calculation."

JEE Advanced 2015 Toppers: Relaxing is important while studying

May 22 is an important day for about two lakh JEE aspirants giving the JEE Advanced 2016 exam. This day will decide whether they can realise their dream of being in an IIT. However, the uncertain pattern of exam, vast syllabus to be covered and hectic preparations involved, create considerable amount of anxiety and stress among students.

PaGaLGuY spoke to some 2015 JEE Advanced topper to know how they dealt with all this stress.

Divyansh Pareekh, AIR 18 in JEE Advanced 2015 said, "It is important that students relax while they are studying. I would enjoy a game of cricket or football with my cousins for half an hour or play computer games." But Divyansh sounded a word of caution, "Computer games are addictive so I restricted myself."

Sankalp Gaur, AIR 55 in JEE Advanced 2015 said, "I am particular about my health. Whenever I would feel stressed, I would play with my pet dog. It helped me relax."

Sheshansh Aggarwal, AIR 58 in JEE Advanced 2015 said, "I would study for 10-12 hours which would drain me out. Playing the Synthesizer for an hour or so helped me go back to studying with a fresh mind."

JEE Advanced 2016: Aspirants enter the last lap of preparation

Around two lakh candidates, who made the cut by clearing the Joint Entrance Examination (JEE) Mains, will be taking the next level of exam, JEE Advanced, scheduled to be held on May 22, 2016.

This year, the Indian Institute of Technology Guwahati, is the organising institute for JEE Advanced. Advanced will decide the ranking based on which a candidate will be allotted a seat in the country's most prestigious engineering colleges. The exam will be conducted in two sessions - from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. for Paper I and from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. for Paper II.

Aspirants have entered the last lap of preparation. PaGaLGuY spoke to Preey Shah's mother, who is touted to be JEE Mains topper from Maharashtra, to ask about his preparation for Advanced. She said, "He had scored 330 out of 360 in the Mains and hopes to maintain the tempo in Advanced. He is busy revising all the topics for one last time." She told that revision is crucial. "Students should not get distracted at this point; they should divert their focus on studies," added Shah's mother, who is also an engineer.

Other than revising subjects, students should focus on time management. Praveen Tyagi, Managing Director, IITians Pace, Mumbai, said, "Students won't be allowed to carry a watch in the examination hall so they should be careful about time management. They should increase their speed by solving previous year's papers for the remaining days but without compromising on accuracy."

Tyagi also mentioned that some students start panicking just a day before the exam. He advised students to relax and not bother much, lest it might take a toll on their performance in the exam.
