Fine.. point taken... I was not aware of the .. um.. complexity.. involved..

If you can speak about it as elequently in an interview.. you and use it to your advantange..

But would like to re-iterate.. I dont think a company will not give you a lateral position based on this experience.. they tend to be picky about things like these..

u may manage to get past interview panel in some institutes but it is certainly not the "relevant work ex". as sm1 rightly pointed out marketing job is much better.

I think workx as a faculty definately counts as a workX.I had rejected offers from TCS and joined PT(Prof. Tutorials) in raipur as a faculty.And i have converted XL,SJSOM,IITD and other results waiting.And i can recall a long discussion about my workX in all those institutes.

So,I guess all kind of workX(Almost all kind ) is acceptable provided you can justify that.

My friend!!! One think i came to know in IIM-L interview is that these IIM interviewers are blatantly against these coaching institutes
they said that they will consider the WIPRO workex but in no way accept the TIME work ex..

That is they r not going to give extra marks for that work-ex..


As they say that any full-time paid work counts as work-ex, i dont see why they can disregard this as work-ex. For all u know, they just tell u in ur interview that they're not gonna count ur work-ex as a means to stress u out. I know panelists even tell people who're workin in family businesses that they dont count that as relevant work-ex.

But ur last point is probably true. If there are points for what kind of work you've been doing, faculty members dont score too much.

Go through the profile of PGP I at the IIM Indore site. You will find two people(Niharika and Rahul) with work experience in coaching institutes.
In IIMK website have a look at the profile of Malini (PGP I). It mentions Career Launcher as her last employer.

Along with the work experience letter , if you can show them the Pay slips , it would be a good proof of genuine work experiece. Coaching institutes may give fake work ex letters but i dont think they can afford to provide fake pay slips.


what kind of fake work ex letters are we talking about, buddy? if ur the sort of person who goes around collecting fake workex letters, i bet u can find one from any company if u know the right ppl. i work at the ho of a bigwig coaching institute, i work my butt off, btw , and have learned some really amazing things about corporate structure, operations, hr, marketing, practical info. im not a faculty, im a course co-ordinator, and i feel im getting more value addition than any softweare job where im sitting and coding.
as for what colleges thinka bout ur work ex, heres what my exp says: at mica, the panelist had this smile on his face and he asked me" so u work for XYZ institute?" i said yes, n told him what id learnt from my job. let me tell u, i wiped his smirk away, got him to sit up n listen. final result? selected (well, waitlisted actually). at imt gaz, the panelsist said he didnt care what id been doing at my workplace. he couldnt care less if i was chief honcho at infosys. final result? selected. i was rejected at nmims and tapmi, but even there the panelists were more keen on discussing what i learnt at my job.
fianlly, i have this to say: from my office, every year ppl join the top b-schools. u can include the iims in that. and as for iiml, a colleague is there as well.
so think before u speak pal, there is no such thing as irrelevant workex.

lemme add to what arun had to say on this:

1. making students comfortable enough to start sharing their REAL doubts and aspirations; the work of many a HR manager.

2. holding hands, motivation is just another day @ work.

3. incredible amount of satisfaction that u'll get when a student of urs cracks an exam. trust me, its quite unbelievable when ppl come up to you and say that YOU have made a difference to him/her.

4. needless to add, ur own concepts become far clearer. u remain open to sudden questions, and solving them within a 5 minute time-frame. there was a student of mine who asked me a tricky question on squares in the class. it took me ten minutes to solve. well, it was a time well spent because THAT question came in CAT this year.

5. interviews/GD's are a pushover for ya. u get so much experience of handling ppl that invariably u end up moderating your own GD.

but yes, its not necessary that IIM's will look kindly on it. in my IIM B interview, they flastly told me that they would consider my teaching as a negative point. they wanted candidates with "natural aptitude"

well, i guess other instis dint have any problems though. they accepted my certificates quite happily

Work experience is not only about the work you do. Its what you learn about working in the organisation that counts. An I know have couple pf friends who taught at MBA coaching classes and simultaneously given CAT.

well i see no reason why any one should consider teaching not equivalent to work-ex

for another i dont think that itrs any different to a management job n specially in his case wherein he also had 2 market his coching institute.

infact very honestly the difficulty in being a faculty at a coaching institute is far more difficult than the jobs most ppl get after thier graduation.(atleast after graduating in commerce)

besides i knw of alot of ppl who are faculty at coaching institutes gettin in2 the top b schools every year.

Spot on.. An IIM K student does have work ex in CL.

By the way guys there was something about "not counting as relevant work ex". What is relevant work experience? I feel that faculty at coaching institute is relevant work ex . You learn to communicate to a lot of people. You learn to bear morons and you learn to bear the brilliant ones. You learn about corporate structure.

Finally if it does not count then how come so many coaching institutes are allowed as recruiters? It wouldn't be placement at all since the work ex does not count atleast when you get in. Or are we talking about double standards by MBA colleges here? I would rather think that it counts than anything else!!

theres one thing tht everyones missed out....wot happens at the end one year if you dont get into a b-school for some unfortunate reason....if you now consider taking up a job in your own field ...its gonna be next to impossible.....


if you do take it up...make sure you have a whole lot of back up plans lined up....

Well i was just a little diverted from the actual thread........I too work in a coaching institute in Pune -Career Forum........... but not as faculty but as Marketing Executive..........Will it make a difference

I am fresher passsed out in 2004. Gave CAT 2004 but could manage only 86 ptile. Looking to work now. I have a Commerce background with 75.5 % at Graduation.
Looking for a profile to work where i cud learn something abt Finance.Can anyone suggest where do i look for. Registering with Naukri and stuff not helped as i m only getting Call centre offers which i m not interested.

I am a final year IIT student and through campus recruitment i can get a job somewhere in very good companies both in s/w and my core field.
But if I decide to work for an IIT - JEE coaching institute, they might be offering me a high pay package ( probably equal to what I would get after my MBA from IIM's or other top institutes ).
If I could not make it to the IIM's this year, I will be taking a job for a year or 2. So I want to know whether the work ex in an IIT-JEE coaching institute is considered by the IIM's ?
As ultimately I want to do an MBA from an IIM, would it be better to forget about that coaching institute and join the job that i would be getting through campus ?

of course it will be counted...chill.... just justify why u left other jobs to do this job...just dont tell them that the sole reason was money... give some crap about how u always wanted to be a teacher etc....

Even I don't think that coaching experience should be a hindrance... i guess they just wanted to judge you... and will accept it in the end 😃
