GMAT Critical Reasoning Discussions

hmmm.. like u said it is debatable! but whr is the correct answer???:)

O/T--> how can u imply that the functions are same IF the chemical structure is same..
churning up my lil chemistry knowledge from aeons ago.. then the 2 substances should essentially be the same right?

Hehe .. Gmat n chemistry couldnt have asked for a better combination ! ! !
You are absolutely right ..Neptune. then the 2 substances are same.. so i'm assuming that atleast they would not be performing 2 totally different functions. I do not know of any existing sane substance performing two opposite acts! Anyways .. Buddy .. i think .. whoever posted the question..- has to post the answer high time.. !

Hello,
I am posting one of the classic critical reasoning problem:
try solving this and know/learn the explanation of the same well.

once you understand such a problem I am sure most of your CR fear is out.

try this:

Please explain this. I am having a hard time understanding.:(

Isn't this supposed to be a CR discussion? Anyway, for CR, think sufficiently and do not go into overdrive and think ot of the box. You're not asked questions about rocket science, for God's sake!! Thats all.....

**********lol*************

Anyway, all the best guys!!! Wishin u all nothin but the very best!!!

check this one out folks:

Frobisher, a sixteenth-century English explorer, had soil samples from Canadas Kodlunarn Island examined for gold content. Because high gold content was reported, Elizabeth I funded two mining expeditions. Neither expedition found any gold there. Modern analysis of the islands soil indicates a very low gold content. Thus the methods used to determine the gold content of Frobishers samples must have been inaccurate.

Which of the following is an assumption on which the argument depends?

A. The gold content of the soil on Kodlunarn Island is much lower today than it was in the sixteenth century.
B. The two mining expeditions funded by Elizabeth I did not mine the same part of Kodlunarn Island.
C. The methods used to assess gold content of the soil samples provided by Frobisher were different from those generally used in the sixteenth century.
D. Frobisher did not have soil samples from any other Canadian island examined for gold content.
E. Gold was not added to the soil samples collected by Frobisher before the samples were examined.

In 1992, there were over 250 rescues of mountain climbers, costing the government almost 3 million dollars. More than 25 people died in climbing mishaps that year. Many new climbers enter the sport each year. Members of a task force have proposed a bonding arrangement requiring all climbers to post a large sum of money to be forfeited to the government in case of calamity.

Each of the following principles, if valid, supports the task force members proposal EXCEPT:

(A) Taxpayers should not subsidize a freely chosen hobby and athletic endeavor of individuals.
(B) The government is obliged to take measures to deter people from risking their lives.
(C) For physically risky sports the government should issue permits only to people who have had at least minimal training in the sport.
(D) Citizens who use publicly subsidized rescue services should be required to pay more toward the cost of these services than citizens who do not.
(E) People who engage in physically risky behavior that is not essential to anyones welfare should be held responsible for the cost of treating any resulting injuries.

option C should be the one Argument is IF A THEN D therefore NOT D implies NOT A

The answer seems to be C. There's nothing mentioned with regards to training or issuing permits. What's the correct answer plz, vscid?

Seems A to me..!! Answer plz..?

E.. If E is not assumed then the conclusion falls apart. The method for determining gold content would be accurate in 16th century too.

If A is assumed then the conclusion would be proved false. The method for determining gold content would be accurate in the 16th century.

Hi guys,

What should be the answer to this question?

Johnson is on firm ground when he asserts that the early editors of Dickinson's poetry often distorted her intentions. Yet Johnson's own, more faithful, text is still guilty of its own forms of distortion. To standardize Dickinson's often indecipherable handwritten punctuation by the use of the dash is to render permanent a casual mode of poetic phrasing that Dickinson surely never expected to see in print. It implies that Dickinson chose the dash as her typical mark of punctuation when, in fact, she apparently never made any definitive choice at all.
Which of the following best summarizes the author's main point?
(A) Although Johnson is right in criticizing Dickinson's early editors for their distortion of her work, his own text is guilty of equally serious distortions.
(B) Johnson's use of the dash in his text of Dickinson's poetry misleads readers about the poet's intentions.
(C) Because Dickinson never expected her poetry to be published, virtually any attempt at editing it must run counter to her intentions.
(D) Although Johnson's attempt to produce a more faithful text of Dickinson's poetry is well-meaning, his study of the material lacks sufficient thoroughness.
(E) Dickinson's editors, including Johnson, have failed to deal adequately with the problem of deciphering Dickinson's handwritten manuscripts.

is it A?? seems to be the safest option... but a bit unsure if Johnson's distortion was SERIOUS,
OA?

I will go with B.

hi neptune,

thanks for your answer, but the correct one is B. though I had thought it would be E, the problem with A is that Johnson's faults are NOT equally serious, since the author says " text is still guilty of its own forms of distortion.".. he doesn't compare the faults.

But I just don't agree with B. what do you think?

thanks,
