There is a certain telecom services company. 85% of its employees are females. Most of these are in their late teens and early twenties. However, the employees are very irregular - being regularly absent. Hence, the company has to hire extra staff in order to complete the work. This leads to losses for the company. You, as a consultant to this company, need to find a solution to this.

XAT score : 93.92 %ile

GD/PI slot : 6th March - 8:45 AM
Venue : YMCA - Central Branch , Colaba , Mumbai

Okay, I reached the venue at 08.33. Soon after 5 min. one person came and announced the name for Group I, which was further split into 2 groups. There were only 15 present(8 in mine and then the next 7)

GT topic was a case study.
Have to recruit a person for summer internship for the current project in my team. Have got some of the applications from the HR department and in this one application the name is same as that of the vice president of the company with a JR. written before it. Later in the afternoon the vice president who has never talked to me before approaches and says with a smile "Hi, How is the recruitment process going on? I am sure you will do justice to it". Then this person mumbles something then.
Study closed.
We were given 3 min. to think about it. Then the GT started with everybody of us giving an opening statement. And at last a closing statement. After that a long wait for the next 7 people to finish their GT and from the interviews. I was the last in my group of 8 so it was really a long wait. But 7 of us guys sat on a table outside further discussing about how GT went, good MBA colleges, which is better than which, work ex etc etc. so it was really helpful in keeping the nerves calm from the long wait.

Then finally after about 2 hrs. I get called in for interview.

P1:(is looking at my CV)
P2:(sit down)
P1:Hitesh Garg, hm, are you a Punjabi.:-?
me: No sir.
P1: Garg's are punjabi?
me: No sir.(surprised at the question)
P2: No they have been given the tag as the North Indians.
me:(what?? are u getting communal?)
P1: Why do you have so poor acads?
me: (damn it, ask something else, there is a lot more in me besides that)
me: Sir there were this one sem which got my percentage really down
P2: padhte likhte nahi ho kya bhai.
P2: So what entertaining thing do you do?
me: sir I experiment with my computer whenever I get time. Like opening it..
P2: wasn looking for something more.
me: sir I watch science fiction programmes and stuff.
P2: really boring. These days students are really boring.
P2: Okay have you read blah blah thing.
me: no sir.
P2: Tell me one novel which you have read.
me: Sir I liked Da vinci code.
P2: It was not a science fiction novel. It was Historical fiction.
me: Yes sir. Sir I have also read The Digital Fortress by the same person. It was pretty science fictional with cryptography and all.
P2: So you have read Da Vinci Code. Do you remember The Last Supper. The painting.
me: yes sir I do.
P2: Have you seen it?
me: yes sir I have.
P2: where? you mustn't have gone to Italy to see it.
me: No sir, A movie has also been released on this novel. So I have followed up with the site and have seen it there.
P2: A movie? Has it been released?
me: Yes sir..(??)
P2: (consulting P1 now but P1 is seems he is not interested) It hasn't been released.
me: sir it has been. There was a controversy as well over the christian community.
P2: Oh yeah yeah, they did not allow it to screen it in Goa. Because of the Christian's controvery.
(By this time P1 has figured something out to ask me)
P1: Tell me one of your favourite subjects.
me: Sir I reallly like Computer Graphics and Computer Networking.
P1: Okay so tell me about stick algorithm.
me: Sir I have never heard of it.
P1: you have never heard of it. Which book do you use?
me: Sir I have read from the local author's book only from Pune University
P1: tell me the name
me: told
P1: Okay then tell me something from Computer Graphics
me: Sir Bresnan's algorithm, blah blah, fractals
P1: Okay what are Fractals?
me: told something but he was looking for more
me: told something more but still he was looking for more
P1: Is a mountain a fractal?
me: yes sir it is. (Then we got into a sort of small argument over 2D fractals and 3D fractals)
me: I was talking with P1 and in between P2 says: you can go now..
P1 finished up what he was saying and so did I.
P2: Send the next person exactly after 1 min.
me: Okay sir. Thank you sir.

and that's how the interview ended. The interviewers weren't looking keen enough to take me, or so with the others who were before me. From the discussion I had with my group mates, there were questions like
Do you have a girlfriend?
Are you punjabi?(Why do they ask that?)
Why have you come all the way from blah blah place?

This one person had a small gauti like beard on his chin(Same as like aamir khan's from DCH)What is that? Is that dirt? Have somebody told you that it looks good?

All together I gave a good shot. Lets see what happens now. Although I should mention, I did feel a little bit of biasing for the people from various places. Keeping my fingers crossed and waiting for the results..

Please do reply with you commendable and not so commendable views.

Hey guys!

Had my GD/PI at Mumbai on 3rd March
Sorry for the late post

B.E (Information Technology)
XAT percentile: 97.78
Work-ex: 18 months in Capgemini

GT:
A "Kirana Store" owner decides to issue credit cards to customers. They can pay him back the money within a month and if they

pay after one month then they have to pay a surcharge of 5%. About 90% of the customers take these cards, but later many of

them do not pay back the dues. He starts having a money crunch so he starts borrowing money from other money-lenders at 12%

interest. He fears if he stops the credit cards now, his customers will stop coming to him and also not return the dues. What

should he do?

Interview:
Panelists: Sarita D'souza
Mihir K Mahapatra

Questions:
1. Some question based on a point I proposed in the GD.
2. Tell me your learnings from your job.
3. What did you hear about the interview from your friend in GIM?
4. You have overall 97 percentile why only 81 percentile in Verbal section?
5. Percentile in CAT?
6. Which calls do you have and state your preference in colleges?
7. Is the college culture important to you?
8. Difference between Data Mining and Data Warehousing? (Acads related)

It will be out by the end of this month.. The GD/PI process will be going till 8th of this month

Thanks a lot rahul

Hi Guys,

Had the gd pi at YMCA on 6th.

GD

A very nice case. Couldnt have asked for a better framed problem. An assistant to the general manager has brought the CV of his neice for appointment in a post that has come up in the finance dept. The GM sends the CV to the HR Dept for screening. The Assistant gets pissed off because he believes that as he has been working loyally in the company for the last 15 years, his neice must be appointed right away.....now GM bhai saab is in a fix.........but GMs problems were nothing compared to the one we GIM aspirants were going to land in.....

The GD started.

There were 30 second openings. As expected some spoke well...while some were left wondering where the hell 30 seconds slipped by by the time they completed their ummmmms and aaaahs....Past experience had taught me that 30secs are too less, you cant think and speak, so guys who have their gds left. Memorise what u wanna speak aur seedha bak do. Socho mat....cos you cant think and speak in 30 secs.

Then the pandemonium began.

The opening happened and then the noise level began to sore.

People were like aisa hona chaiye...waisa hona chaiye...yeh acchi baat nahi hai....meritocracy chahiye...nepotism.nahi hona chaiye.... yeh woh....

the group was then urged to dump this wider discussion or debate and concentrate on what the poor GM must do in this little caselet which could prove to be that ticket to goa.

Par koi sunne ko tayyar nahi. A girl at the fag end of the table was trying in vain to bring order but she got no support and the GD was turning out to be the baap of all fish markets.....

So finally one of the Panelist stepped in (probably he feared the roof coming down) and said "I know the time is not yet up....(and my heart skipped a beat....entire groups being disqualified for fishmarketing is not unheard of)....but now its time everyone sum up their thoughts in one minute each.

So in this way the fish market went into a circuit breaker a la stock markets.

The sum ups were good and mirrored common thoughts that th Manager shud follow proper procedure and he shud try to assuage the miffed assistant. (then wonder why so much shouting happened)

I just have 2 words dudes and dudettes...."God Knows"...

Thank You

weird yaar...dnt understand from your points wat they were trying to prove...??
D: It doesn't coz i always used to do well in the verbal section in the mocks i had given. I feel my thinking about the answers did not match with the examiner's that day :wow:

One never "gives" mocks. One always "takes" them. That probably explained the reason for your verbal score to her!!

No offence. ATB for the results and thanks for providing us with an official tentative date for the final result.

my group had our gd second and had to wait.
basically gd topic was about the V.P jr and his application for an internship.
the gd went well, got sufficient entries, made some good points blah blah.
the format of the gd was basically everyone had to make an opening statement, a closing statement at the end and finally a written summary.

I was second last in my sub group and had to wait about 2 & a half hrs before my interview.

basically the method of interviewing was not of the cliche variety.

there were two profs from gim p2 kept silent while p1 did the interviewing.

p1: so u went to campion school, u must be spoilt ?
me: no sir maby some not i
p1: did u go to school in a mercedes ?

there were 16 people in the slot. we were divided into 2 batches. i was in the first eight.

case study- (something along these lines) - irregularities happening in a company on a large scale basis. management coming to know about the same. there's a newbie who's been caught indulging in this malpractice. he admits his mistake . the above person has a lot of personal problems.

as a manger how would you handle the above situation.

case study was constructive, although odd points were being repeated now and then.everyone chipped in

everyone had to give an opening statement. same held true regards to closing.finally we had to summarize by putting pen on paper.

once we were done the other batch were called in. once they were done it was time for PI

i was the first candidate to be called in

panel consisted of 2 people.( a ma'am and a sir)

me: good afternoon
panel:GA, have a seat.
me:thank you

sir: why electronics and communication?
me: told

sir: so, IIM-B is a no-smoking zone, is the implementation of the rule actually necessary?
me:told

ma'am: pls give me your file

ma'am: so , you are in the final year?
me: yes ma'am

sir: dont you think its better to have a couple of years of work-ex before doing an mba?
me: defended well

ma'am: what are the different types of antennas?
me:told

sir: which has been the most challenging subject?
me:computer networks

sir:tell me something about it
me:told

ma'am: whats a transport layer?
me: told (explained udp and tcp)

during the course of discussion (general discussion) told them about my liking for essentials of management.(was one of my subjects in 6th sem)

sir: whats organisational behaviour?
me: told about MBO's , explained the hierarchy, was about to relate it to organisation behaviour when he interrupted and told me that MBO is an outdated concept.he told that work-ex was necessary to understand the organisation behaviour of a company, the politics involved and so forth

sir:who devised MBO
me: (dint know) said henry fayol, told him that i was not sure about this
sir:it was devised by xxxx trucker (not sure of the name)

sir again emphazised the importance of work-ex. (it was not a stress interiew by any means)
his concern seemed genuine. for some apparent reason he was of the opinion that i needed to have some work-ex before doing an mba

sir: why gim?
me:told

sir: if you were to eliminate 2 people in your group whom would that be and why?
me:told

what other calls do you have?
me:told

sir: i know almost all the students today apply to many colleges, whats your prefernce?
me:divided the calls that i had got into two categories, placed gim along with x , y, z in the topmost one.

ma'am: ok, you may leave
me: thank you ma'am, thank you sir.

it was one of those interviews where i really dont know what to expect. after having reflected on my performance i'm still not sure.

sir , for some apparent reason (atleast in my case, i dont know what he told the other freshers) made me believe that work-ex is a must for an MBA

i'm not too happy with my performance.

i really dont know what to expect. maybe touch and go.

hoping that my experience would help others

cheers n regards

ps - thoughts while leaving the campus - too painful to recollect

Hi all,
I had attended the GIM - GDPI today at IIMB campus , 8.45 am batch. There were about 16 people who were in the batch (including one person who came late and was admitted into the second slot). We were split into 2 slots, and i was number 6 in the first slot. The GD was a case study, which i think someone has posted on some thread before.
The Group Task is actually a four stage process,
- Opening statement - here give your fist views about the case in hand. The invigilators had asked us not to mention anything which was there in the case-let. Hence it was only a 1-2 sentence opening comment(s).
- The actual Discussion , which lasted for about 8-10 minutes where everyone participated, listened and had the opportunity to voice their thoughts.
- The concluding statement(s) - give your views about what happened during the GD, the conclusion reached during the GD etc..
- The write up - a small write-up (5-6 sentences) about the GD and the consensus reached

The PI began as soon as the GD for the second batch was over. Questions for my PI included things on my work-ex (what is FPGA, IC, VLSI, VHDL, since i am from VLSI wing), on my company(what to they do), on general electronic terminology (i was asked about RFID, why is it used, where all and so on).... Then into the general HR Questions (why MBA, why GIM, give me 3 important points which made you like GIM , since i had talked about a couple of points i picked from this forum, What do you do during free time, authors, since i had said reading, On the setting of English countryside settings from Agatha Christies novels...) ... well, i feel i had done pretty well during the interview..
The rest is beyond my control.
Best wishes to everyone who had attended & who are to attend it on 8th.
