Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) from ICFAI_Hyderabad

Management Accounting: Read books by SN Maheshwari and Jain-Narang. Personally, I found SN Maheshwari really good.

Economic Legislations: I read prep manuals from Institute of Company Secretaries of India (ICSI) and Institute of Cost & Works Accountants of India (ICWAI) foundation and intermediate courses, which helped me score 2nd highest in India in EL with their help. So I guess it would be very useful to you too.

Just a note guys,
when I use the term "read", I mean to say that you should look at the examples and the solutions given in those books and if you have time, then make sure you practice them in writing coz thats whats gonna clarify the concepts in ur mind.
No doubt, the workbooks are good but at the best, you can get a very good feel of the kind of questions you will be asked in the exams by solving the workbooks. An average guy would need a bit more of practice and these books would be immensely helpful. Not to underestimate the past papers, solving them will give you a good level of confidence but make sure you do them only when you have completed the whole syllabus.

Secondly, I have got the theme from this thread and also in many PMs that I get, that people are hell bent on "clearing" the papers. NO ! THIS SHOULD NOT BE THE SOLE CRITERION.

You guys should also focus on understanding the concepts and be able to analyse based on those concepts. If that takes place, you shall clear the papers with stellar grades. No doubt clearing the papers is a must but your focus should also be on learning different things in finance, which will ultimately be useful to you and be the foundation stone for your career.

Anymore help you need guys, just PM me.

Brilliant job Tumtum. All India rank 2 amazing

How much did you score in EL paper?

Infact i want to ask you this thing. University offers gold/silver medal as well as merit certificates to All India top 10 rank holders in CFA programme. How much do you think these guys overall score?

Well, a couple of my friends scored highest in India and their scores were in early 80s AT THAT TIME....say between 2001-2004.

Probably now the way this competition is growing, I think guys who score topmost must be anywhere between late 80s to early 90s u see.

Regards,

Tumtum.

Ideally, the approach to ensure that you have adequate materials and you practice enough, you should form groups guys. Form city-wise groups, or maintain a separate e-group where you post your queries regarding different subjects, which can be answered by anyone from the group OR someone can atleast point out where to look for an answer.

As new members chip in, the group may also share past exam question papers or download them by sharing the costs, which would be cheap for everybody instead of everyone shelling out 100 bucks for each paper.

Then we can also have weekly/fortnightly meetings where the group members can discuss about different career opportunities or can arrange for someone senior and working people to guide them in this regard. I can help as much as you all want me to in this regard on a personal note.

The whole idea behind me proposing this endeavour is that I felt pretty lonely when I did my study and then at a later stage, forming a group immensely helped me. Hence,I guess it should help you too coz if not anything else, when you see other people aiming for the same thing that you do, it gives you a competitive spirit and also does good for your motivation and self confidence. Believe me friends, amongst yourselves, you will have many success stories and that will be really inspiring.

Hope you guys get a whiff of what I mean to say and that something concrete will be done in this direction.

Any help needed in this regard and in co-ordination and I am more than willing to do it.

Warm regards,

Tumtum.

hie guys. i second tumtum's idea. let us now do some serious cfa acads and queries stuff on this thread itself or lets add eachother in mssngrs .

my studies have started full on. im finding the 1st level easy(ie the 2 groups ive recieved). DO THEY SEND IN GAMMA MATERIAL ONLY AFTER WE PASS THESE TWO?

i find the accounts and eco stuff easy.so starting quants from group 2 right away. needs a bit of hardwork for starters. also the finance chapters are really cool.

my strategy is read the text casually once or twice.since i know most of it, it is fine. then revise using the study guides and solve the workbook along with it.
any non commerce background ppl here? how do u feel .

HEY TUMTUM, BABU, are the real exams more or less like the samples at the end of the workbooks?
and are u like short of time or comfy in the exams . what is the papertaking strategy like?

hope to hear from u guys. let optimum utilisation of efforts be the mantra.

Congrats bhai for the material. I havent got my Beta material !!. Only Alpha i got.

You will be sitting for Accounts and economics paper in july (group Alpha)..right.

I analysed previous year question paper with respect to workbook and questions are directly picked from workbook. In most numericals, figures are same.

There are lot of mistakes in Group Alpha material. Hope we can discuss printed mistakes also

Hi Ameen,

CFA_smart, i read BT, ET and sometimes business world. As i want a job equity analysis (Indian markets/ KPO), i browse www.moneycontrol.com and nasdaq.com and keep a track of emerging global equity markets. Also you can use www.moneybhai.com and start doing vritual trading for free. Check out www.einvesting.com in case if you are interested to do virtual trading on NASDAQ.

Once my exams gets over i am planning to read some finance/investment books.

I am sorry mahesh (maheshtk_21) for the wrong information which i passed to you.Infact i also didnt knew about it and came to know today from ICFAI counsellor.

You can appear for 2 groups together. So it means if you have the will and capacity to work 'extremely hard' you can finish each level in 6 months and whole CFA in flat 18 months. Sounds good but its tough

However, you can not appear for L 1 and L 2 papers together. So you can not give group Gamma (L 1) and Group Delta (L2) together. You have to pass L 1 before you can sit for L 2 papers.

I have revisited April 2006 Exam schedule and dates doenst not clash if one decides to give 2 groups together.

yeah true u can give 2 groups together, provided they r both in the same level.
yep, it is not possible or practical to give 2 groups together other than in level 1.
but still wanted to know they technical possibilities.

me too joined the group. hope anyone who has papers and stuff will post it there. we can also put in whatever e resources we can lay our hands on.

also i wud suggest that we use the messenger for discussions and mabbe even conference. as babu said ,there are some mistakes in alpha material. may not have come to everyone's notice. we can take up such issues.

i also request u guys to bring more members with the similar pursuits into the fold. pg ka memebership bhi badhega .

Hey babu, just to point out your observation. Just look at the date on which the workbook has been printed. Now compare it with the date on which the exams were held.
If you see that the print date of work book is later than last year's respective exam dates, then it simply means that the workbook is a compilation of the previous year's examination papers and NOT that the examination questions were picked straightaway from the workbook as you say !!! That is why you find the sums with same figures in the workbooks (lol). If what you say is correct, then it means that you already know the April, July and October 2006 examination questions right ? Wrong !!

Even I had fallen for the same observation when I did CFA but I soon realised that it was other way round.

I didnt mean to pick on you Babu but just to point out that CFA papers DONT come straightway from workbooks. Rather the workbooks are compiled from the previous papers. Hope you dont feel offended and be more careful when dishing out your observations.

Regards,

Tumtum.

Hi friends,

based on my experience, I would recommend that alongwith your CFA studies, you also read

1) Chartered Financial Analyst magazine.
2) Treasury Manager magazine.
3) Projects & Profits magazine
4) Professional Banker magazine.

All these are ICFAI publications and if you subscribe in a group, then you shall find it cheap.

Apart from that,

5) Business Standard newspaper
6) Business Line newspaper.

Get a Financial Times and/or Wall Street Journal online subscription by one person's name and share the annual subscription amongst yourselves.

If not all this, websites such as http://finance.yahoo.com/ are free for use by all and should also serve your purpose for the start atleast. Also for those interested in precious metals (gold, silver, copper et al), www.thebulliondesk.com is a fabulous site. For those in metros, many seminars on different financial topics are held periodically so try attending them.

Apart from these, the sites that babu mentioned are also immensely useful.
Though it is too early to do so now, but for those aiming a career in equities, tracking news items and their impact in a partiular sector of chioce and reading more research reports about those sectors would lay the foundation stone for their careers.

So happy reading guys.

Tumtum.

You are right TumTum. We dont know the future question papers. I had that thing in mind that its other way round. In Books, its printed February 2004 and question paper which i compared was october 2005. All theoritical questions which were asked in exam were in workbook and few practical questions were new , although concepts remained the same

On an average workbook contains 700-800 questions and it can be only solved through concept based approach. So even if questions come from workbook, i guess concepts should be strong to crack questions in examination hall under extra examination stress.
As new members chip in, the group may also share past exam question papers or download them by sharing the costs, which would be cheap for everybody instead of everyone shelling out 100 bucks for each paper.

Tumtum have raised a good point here. The previous year examination paper can surely help and when you download , it gets stored in your hard disk (pdf format) with suggested answers.

So the files can be transferred and payment can be shared. The payment can be credited through online transfer which most banks do free of charge.

Mahesh and cfa_smart comes to my mind who will be appearing for group alpha. In this case if we are 3, then each paper will cost Rs 33.33 , saving almost 67 bucks. Great Fund managers 😃

Do post your opinion about this. I am willing to download paper and pay first through my credit card.

Hi to all,

yeah Babu we are gonna be fund managers before completing our course, well babu i will tell u,but i need some time to pay you amount because i haven't got my Credit Card, otherwise i would have downloaded those papers.By the way if u can then i can pay you later.

And i want to thank babu and tumtum for providing those additional reading suggestions.thanks u guys u are really helping me.
