Heres few pointers fr those who hav just strtd preparing fr cat.
1. The most imp part of cat is dat puttin in 8-10 hrs a day dsnt help much, in fact its better to study less...only 1-2 hrs a day is more dan enuf fr nw, bt u shud mak it a point to sit widd the material fr at lst 4-5 days a wk...
2. try to get d study mat of ny coaching center, nd frst go thru the entire study mat nd practice material...ideally, this shud take arnd 3-4 months..so u shud b done by end feb or march. Goin thru the entire study mat of one coaching insti, instd of refering to multiple buks in d begng ensures that u dnt miss out ny topic.
3. Next, focus on improving ur skills by goin thru reference buks. The nxt 3 mnths u cn prctc prblms from diff buks fr diff topics dat r available in d market. This is the tym wen u shud wrk on improving ur weaker section, goin thru concepts, solving prblms, etc. U shud b done wid this by july, wen d test series of all instis strt.
4. This is the time wen u shud grdly build up d tempo. Giving lots of mocks are the best way to reach ur peak. For the first 3-4 mocks, dnt aim to score too high.just familiarize urslf wid the timed environment, try difff strategies (though not much choice left there nw). Find out the areas u r cmfrtbl in, nd ur weaknesses. The analysis of mocks is very imp. No one cn overstress it. Make an excel sheet, and after every mock, put in ur scores nd percentiles along wid cutoffs, both sectional nd OA, in dat sht..dat way u will knw whch way u r goin nd wrk accordingly. Also u cn put in d qstn nos of qstns dat u found interesting or tricky in each section. It shud b arnd 5-8 qstns at most in a mock. Dat way u wud hav a repository of arnd 50-60 gud qstns to luk thru on the day bfr the final exam..nd u wnt b left in d lurch.
5. While it is imp to go fr enuf mocks, bt dont overdo it. I suggest takin arnd 2-3 mocks a week, wid gaps in between. Ideally, u shud do a mock, analyse it d next day. Revise the concepts u gained from it on the third day nd go fr nthr mock on the fourth.
6. Last but most important, CAT is just another exam so dnt let it become ur lyf. While it is important to be focussed, dnt get into a cocoon. Go out wid frnz, socialise, have fun wid ur family, do thngs u luv. Make sure that wen u crack the mother of all exams, u at least have enuf ppl to celebrate it wid... :)

dnt wrry bro...by d way, even if u r not goin for the paid TF courseware, i wud suggest u to subscribe to the CAT Question a day nd daily wordlist from them. email subscription is free, nd the quality is exceptionally gud fr both...
PS: m not marketing fr TF, bt from my experience of 2 yrs, i cn assure u abt the quality of TF being up dere with d best, at at a lot cheaper price...

Dnt bother abt ur performance here..TF literally throws away discounts, keep a tab on their site, nd getting 20-30% discounts on TF courseware is no big deal... :)

I was also a CAT aspirant till one year back, and finally cracked it last year.
Only one advice, try to get as much info and knowledge out of PG as possible. For that, go through the various threads and all. Try to build up relations with other CAT aspirants. It will really help you guys out. Due to PG, I now know loads of people in other B-Schools.
