hello everybody,

Well as the celebrations on campus on account of Praxis Business School's victory over IIMC seems to subside (it feels gr8 to have overcome them with utmost ease in the ET quiz held at the Xavier's audi; especially after the last few results in quizzes and debates where teams form IIMC managed to edge us out at the very last minute), we get back to our regular schedule. so to start with, we had presentations in consumer behaviour (for PGP-II) students where students in groups of five came out with the implications of Martin Fishben's model of 'muti-attribute attitude' for the respective brands that they were assigned with. the best part in praxis is to sit through these presentations which clearly reflect the kind of effort that the faculty puts in during the classes (Mr. Anindra Halder in this case) ...the presentations and the discussions that followed helped us seek clarity on a model that seems to be critical in attaining juris-prudence while judging consumer behaviour...and to folllow it, we have the much awaited class from Dr. Samal (adjunct faculty of XIMB), who continues to amaze us with his grasp on topics related to accounting (Finanacial & Cost and Management), Business and Company Law and now Economic Legislation (Income Tax). and the class always has to be on its toe for his surprise quizzes can really surprise students not just on the timing front but also on the depth of understanding that the questions seek.

oh yes....by the way, we have a business quiz scheduled this evening by none other than the ones who orchestrated our vistory in the ET quiz (Saurav Jalan and Sahill Shaha)...and the very nature of Praxis and the students of not resting on the laurels shall make it sure that we have such host of events to gear our quizzers and debaters for the much coveted tag of 'Champions' in the BT Acumen (incidentally the debating team of IIMC managed to just edge us out during the regional finals of 2007-08;so unfinished business still lurks on that front!).

cheers!

Hi Everybody

Life at praxis rocks ..........Work hard and Party harder is the motto........

Btw Praxis beating IIM C is no mean achievement .........we are really proud of our guys (Saurav and Sahill)

Cheers !!!!

Saturday:

Saturday afternoon unfolded with a session from Mr. Agnimitra Biswas from IBM, who is the lead faculty designated for the course on Software Project Management . He took us through issues that may surround a Software Project Manager in a global delivery environment and ways to address the mentioned issues. the class paid rapt attention as he spell-bound us with his style of delivery and the content of the discussion .the day ended with him conducting a quiz which tested us on the applications of Software Project Management methodologies in various real life scenarios.

Brief profile of Mr. Agnimitra Biswas:
Has over fourteen years of work experience in PwC Consulting and IBM, involving program and project management, software quality management, IT strategy consulting and implementation of application software. At IBM India Ltd, he is an Executive Project Manager at the Kolkata Global Delivery Center. He is a certified Project Management Professional from PMI and leads the Project Management Center of Excellence at IBM India Kolkata location.Agni's interest area also includes eGovernance and other application of Information and Communication Technology.
Sunday (Morning to Afternoon):
It was an early start to the day, with the much anticipated class from
Mr. Atanu Ghosh lined up from 9a.m. to 4p.m.
Brief Profile of Mr. Atanu Ghosh:
B.E- Electrical (Jadavpur University); PGDM (IIM- B)

Has been an Associate Partner/ Director (SAP Practice) with IBM India. He is currently Head of SAP Consulting Services, Nevaeh Technology Pvt. Ltd., a recently set-up business and IT consulting company. In the 15 years of his career, Atanu has been involved in delivering business and SAP solutions in sectors like iron and steel, manufacturing, oil and gas, pharmaceuticals, retail and textiles for clients like Tata Steel, Essar Steel, Ranbaxy Laboratories, Arvind Mills, Titan, Becton Dickinson, etc. He has also managed and serviced several international projects and clients including British Petroleum (UK), British Gas (UK), Ericsson (Sweden), Shell (UK), Lenovo (China). He is a management consultant of international repute and his contribution to SAP practice has been acknowledged in national and international press by various industry leaders. He also enjoys being an avid photographer with various publications in international photographic journals.

Atanu Sir conducts our classes on Enterprise Resource Planning (ERP), a domain that is increasingly becoming important to master for the future managers. Atanu Sir happened to take us through four sessions .These sessions dealt with on issues such as- how to gauge client's requirements and needs with regards to an ERP solution, how to understand the needs better and how to manage relationships in case of Off-shore ERP projects. he also led us through ways in which a proposal from a consultant to a client needs to be articulated and project management methodologies that apply to an ERP implementation project

and now came the best part of the day:.....the class got divided into 5 groups of eight members each. out of these five groups, two groups were assigned the role of a client (one is a steel company, the other happens to be a retail chain) and the remanining three groups were assigned the role of a consultant. now the consultants are required to frame proposals for the client companies after having convinced them about the need of an ERP system. the consultant's grades would depend on the clients evaluation of their offering and the client teams would in turn be evaluated by a board of professors who evaluate the parameters and fairness of evaluation on part of a client. We have been given two weeks for the same after which the workshop would be held. personally, am having a gala time, as i am into a client team and am utilizing the opportunity to boss over some of my pals who have got into the consulting teams!!
Sunday (Late Afternoon to Evening):

This is what the wanna be retailers & marketers in Praxis, so very eagerly wait for! A class by
K. Dasaratharaman B.E- Mechanical (IIT Madras), PGBM (IIM A)
President, Speciality Businesses, Spencer's Retail Retail Strategy Area

who conducts our classes in Retail Management. His brief profile is given below:
K. Dasaratharaman

Dash, as we fondly call him took us through various aspects of managing a retail store. in the next two hours we discussed cases on McDonald's successful foray into the Indian Market and Nanz's failure in doing the same. Dash has this uncanny ability to enrapture the students in the class with his delivery style, content and sense of humour!). having done with the cases, he briefly took us through some examples on Store Economics, Positioning, and so on.

at eight in the evening, after having been done with our discussion on Retail Strategy, we decided to request him to narrate us his experience of framing strategies towards what he termed as the
BINGO segment, while being associated with ITC (a name with which the stickiness factor on part of ITC has still remained as many years after, ITC decided to name their offerings in the snacks and chips segment with the term that was originally coined by Dash). and gauging the intensity of the class, he had no option but to relent to our request. the next one and a half hour was a treat for all the students as he narrated us his experience of trying to convert the bidi-smokers (The Bingos!) into cigarette smokers, how he succeeded in his attempt, only to be failed by the regulations that cropped up four years hence (courtesy the 'Bidi Lobby' in the parliament )!

We finally wrapped up the day at about 9.30 p.m., content and satiated with another eventful Sunday!

The TQM students though, sorely missed the absence of
Mr. Rajeev Singhal , the Chief of Marketing and Sales, Long products, Tata Steel, who had some professional commitments to honour and hence had to postpone his classes till the next Sunday!

Hey all,
The end-terms in Praxis started today. Just finished my Brand Management exam. The questions, a mix of caselets and application based questions thoroughly tested our internalisation of the concepts taught in class. Another beauty of a question paper churned out by the Dean Govindrajan sir. Sir has this unique ability to surprise students (be it IIM L, XLRI, XIMB or Praxis Business School) with basic questions which require deep understanding of the subject; something that I have personally developed attaining his classes over the last one year! Hope that the marks really depict the effort that the students have put in towards the subject!
Oops, have to go back to studies now..because we have the Economic Legislation end-term staring at us next...(3 hours from now).....and Dr. Samal (fondly labelled the binary professor by the XIMB fellows for the panache with which he destroys students through the questions set during the exam) is for sure to fire his much-feared volleys at us next:shocked:...puys plz pray for me!

Cheers!

Congratulations
Saurav Jalan & Sahill Shaha

You guys have proved your mettle by cracking the Economic Times Business Quiz.

Hi Budhaditya,

It's great to see that courses designed here at Praxis involves corporate's themselves, which makes elite b-school in India different from others. My question is are these faculty that serious about delievery of the course on time, and at proper interval. Last night, I was talking to a friend who's also a MBA from ICFAI Hyderabad and he was of the point that teaching is not the area of corporates due to their tight schedule and lack of experience in the teaching world.

Thanks
Rakesh

Hi Rakesh,
It is good that you raised that question...well corporates can be a bit fidgety when it comes to teaching in a b-school...but for that matter, our academic council is very serious about the involvement and the competence of the concerned corporate involved in staging lectures here in Praxis...we, as students are required to provide feedback about the concerned corporate after the first or the second session (latest), and depending on the feedback, a corporate gets an extension or is dispensed with..Believe me, people like Barun Lala, Rajeev Singhal, Atanu Ghosh, Dash..and the like are some of the better teachers that we have had in our entire academic life...and haven't had any exceptions to the brilliance that corporates bring in to our classrooms...!Depends a great deal on the judgement of the academic council.... and they have done pretty well so far!

Cheers!

Hi Budhaditya.

Is it true that if majority of you aren't comfortable with the faculty you get a change, thats amazing. One more query I have interest in the area of finance, but I find very few subjects being offered in that area and what I understand after talking to one first batch student that I have to take subject from other area also. Also what I came to know is that under area of concentration Praxis offers Risk and Treasury, but for the first batch treasury never happened; how is the scene this year, is it being offered and if yes who is going to take it.

Thanks
Rakesh

Hi Rakesh,

Sorry for the long delay.. Its been a hectic week and hardly had time to log in! The placements are about to begin by Dec. so, everyday we are having aptitude tests over and above the regular projects.

Now to your question about specializations: In the second year, each trimester there would be 4 subjects offered in Finance, marketing, HR, systems n ops. Of these 12 subjects, a student needs to select any 7 subjects. If you are interested in finance, then you may take up all the 4 finance subjects and for the other 3- choose from marketing or any other stream. As for the area of concentration in treasury, it is definately being offered this term and it is being taken by Mr Pritam Kundu.

Best of luck for your CAT.
