So here comes the first topic from GIM,Goa GD panel.
The topic for both the panels were :
"What should one expect to accomplish through an mba program"
AND
"Public waste and inefficiency damage a country more than corruption"
People will start posting their experiences soon.
Do we have to choose between the two topics or these were separate topics for two panels? Thanks!
Rushabhlalan SaysDo we have to choose between the two topics or these were separate topics for two panels? Thanks!
You don't have to choose.
These were the different topics for the two panels.
The topics for panels at same timing can be same also. But there won't be any choice for sure.
SINCERE Request to all : Let this thread be only for GD/PI Experience from now on.
Post the queries (anything) on the given links in my first post on the top of this page.
Thanks.

GD topic - "Public waste and inefficiency damage a country more than corruption"
We were given 1 minute to think, 20 seconds to give an opening statement then 10-15 minutes for the GD and finally 20 minutes for a closing remark... there were 6 people in the GD
followed by a write up...where we had to summarise the GD, put our own points into it...whichever of the two we wish to do...10 minutes for that...
Interview :
The panel asked to introduce myself and family...then asked questions on what I had said....Asked if I had a girlfriend...then we discussed on whether being in a relation is right or not...questions on minor and major projects...where do u see yourself 5 years down the line..I said something regarding me interested in HR....so quizzed on HR..like why HR??what roles...and stuff
Came to hobbies...Books...what last book you read..I said Atlas Shrugged...and asked about it...
It was a nice experience...tho the panel was trying to catch you off gaurd and trying to counter everything I said...maybe somewhere on the lines of a stress interview...
But all in all It was a good experience....decent GD and a fairly good PI...keeping my fingers crossed 😃

we were given 2 minutes to think about the topic and then everyone has to give an opening statement not lasting more than 1 min. Then topic is open for discussion. The gd lasted for 10 mins. we had 10 people in the group instead of an actual attendance of 13. Everyone spoke with their views on the topic, 2 spoke really well and no fish market stuff happened. Then everyone would have to conclude, this time the order is reversed.
After it you wud be given 5 mins to write a essay comprising of 4 paragraph, 1st should be the gist, followed by 2 n 3 which was about your take on the topic and last should be concluding para.. this was basically to test your written communication skills. My essay was completely bad as i left some space in the beginning for my opening paragraph, completed the rest but in the end they got my paper when i was writing my opening para making my essay very abrupt in the beginning itself. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

unfortunately our GD turned into a semi fish market since the beginning :banghead:Everyone was saying the same point and not listening to anyone. But one positive was that somehow everyone got a chance to speak!:o We aslo managed to come to a loose conclusion. I gave around 4-5 points(3 were drowned in the confusion). Some people tried to listen to the counter arguments too... but overall bad GD. plz dont be silent is what i would say. Do chip in your points or try to guide the GD so that a direction is achieved.

When we were having the warm up discussion, i asked him what he did in marketing, and responded to his questions, their were only 4-5 people who did it. Dont be hesitant. Participate as if ur talking to ur friend but talk like ur talking to ur senior's 😛 no bakwas! only gyan!

GD Topic: Public waste and inefficiency does greater damage to a country than corruption.
Experience: 11 people in the group.
We were given 1 minute to think and then had to make an opening statement (introduction).
Then the GD started. It wasn't a fish market at all but sometimes more than 2 people were speaking together for few seconds.
Then we were asked to make a closing statement.
After that we were asked to write about it in 2 paragraphs of 4 to 5 sentences. We were told not to write in bullet points.
PI: 2 Professors.
p1 took my file and started going through the mark sheets and certificates.
p2: Tell us about yourself.
Me: Answered.
p2: Your hobby is reading? favorite author.
Me: Told.
p2: What's happening in the economy and why?
Me: Answered. Some facts from news and rest gyaan.
p2: Favorite subjects.
Me: Told.
Then p1 took over. He asked me a lot (read A LOT) on my favorite subjects and other subjects too.
I was able to answer some of them. Made some guesses in others. Didn't know the answers to few. :(
This was the stress-kinda part of the interview.
p2: Other calls.
Me: Told.
----- Over -----
Interview lasted for 18-20mins
Any other interesting thing: Nothing. Thanks to the seniors here, I was well aware of how the entire process takes place.
The freshers were grilled on their subjects and the work ex people on their job (as told by other candidates).
No questions like why GIM, why MBA etc were asked.
All the best!

Batch of Interview: 27th feb, 8 30 am, GIM CAMPUS
i reached the campus 20 mins prior to the interview, one senior immediately came : and guided us to the class where other candidates were sitiing, they were very much helpful, infact they were more concerned about us then ourself
our panel had the director of the college himself along with another visiting faculty
GD Topic:PUBLIC WASTE AND inefficiency damage the country more than corruption
had a fairly cool gd , all were made to make opening statements followed by an open GD, it was a fish market scenario and everyone were quite chilled during the GD except one who was contradicting each and every one trying to get attention , it ended with everyone making a closing statement and followed by essay on the GD
PI :
both the panelist were quite chilled out, it was a non stress type interview, no bashing up, all the questions were in general, no technical stuff, the interview was kinda spontaneous , as they asked all the conventional questions in a non- conventional manner so had to frame my answers differently, all in all had a nice time with them....
since i finished early i had ample time to go through campus, and its a fabulous place, had a nice chocolate shake in the cafeteria, clicked some nice pics in the campus, all in all had a very expirience, though my chances of gettin through are less coz of low xat score, but still would love be a junior to some excellent seniors.
p.s. enjoy the BEACH PARTY seniors 😁 ,
and ya i missed meeting Mr. AVINASH JHA , would have liked to have a chat with you
p,s, you are quite famous in the campus coz as pagalguy king
GD-PI Experience (GIM 2012-14)
Date: 27.02.2012 (1:30 pm Slot) Hotel Swagath, Malviya Nagar, New Delhi
GD Topic: Is India's Economic Progress is in the right direction.
1 min to think and scribe on rough sheet- 30 secs to broach the topic individually- 10 mins of open forum GD- 30 secs to summarise the discussion individually- 5 mins to write about discussion in about 250 words.
Overall it was a friendly discussion, just like my SCM experience, everyone contributed, we digressed in between on the way towards FDI in Retail, but refined it rapt. Not a fish market and everyone was at a level playing field. All guys and girls were great.
PI Experience: Prof 1 (senior, he is from Marketing- P1), Prof 2 (Junior, he is from finance- P2)
Introduce yourself (Told)
Why MBA (Told)
About my company and Job Profile (Told)
You are earning good amount (Again that SCM dialogue) and still age is on your side. Then P1 stopped. You have good acads, what about CAT and other calls. I told about all my calls. P1 asked then why GIM when you have good amount of calls from other B-schools. I gave a diplomatic answer. He asked me am I going to join marketing or what as I talked a lot about Goa and GIM. Then he started talking about my Engineering College. We had a good discussion ending his praise for my college (Actually he is also a Bong!!). He ended on indicating that I should be honest about my final destination. I started and he cut me down saying I should focus on converting my IIM calls. P2 remained silent throughout the process. PI was of 10 mins duration.
PS: Not satisfied about PI. I should have illustrated more about why GIM, but this is such a typical question and when professors carry a pre-conceived notion that the interviewee is not going to join as he has other good calls. Time for some serious introspection about how to tackle these open ended questions.
In the morning slot a guy having XL-BM & HR calls faced the same situation. When we were having fag outside, he repented about that.
Advice: Good process, nothing to feel tensed about. Everyone is having a chilled interview session and coming out with a big smile. In the GD, you will get the chance to speak and write so come up with full confidence and kick it off. Goa is waiting for you !!!!!

GD Topic:something about Economic growth as a measure of development in India, can't recall it proper. And I can't recall it because I have no idea about the Indian Economy:banghead::banghead::banghead:.I related the economic development in the country with efforts being made by the govt to develop the rural sector as it has a major chunk of the population. This was my opening statement.Thank you for the free hit,I couldn't think of anything more. Then the discussion started with facts and figures flying in from all sides and corners. We were 9 of us.People related economic development to the fact that everyone in India owns a car and has a flat :P{ @ the person who said this, bhai if you are reading this, you made my GD..haha}.Rest went about grabbing airtime with facts and figures about the various economic terms and about various sectors of our economy. As a group,we did not reach any sort of conclusion or discuss any solutions about problems preventing eco. development.I was mostly a listener, tried to throw in whatever googlies I could during the discussion thinking something from my mouth might get heard.{It didn't}.At the end we were supposed to conclude the GD individually, I again lost track of what I was speaking mid way through, call me boring:banghead::banghead::banghead:..blabbered something. Then An essay about the same topic was to be written. They asked us to write just two paragraphs in proper English.PROPER ENGLISH.They wanted nothing else.I did that bit well,I hope so.
All in All if I call my performance as boring/uninteresting in the GD,i'll be doing myself a favour.
PI:
P1 : Tell us something about yourself.
I : Sold myself totally, telling everything positive about me including how driven I was to do an MBA.
P1 : Your claims do not match up to your performance in the GD though.{Papa to Papa hote hain,ab bolo beta}
I: Sir,to be honest- The topic about the Indian Economy and its growth,Sir,well, It isn't something about which I can contribute much constructively.{mujhe nahi maloom iske baare me kuch}.I smiled sheepishly.
P1; He smiled back and said good you have been candid with that answer.{If I had said anything else,he would have hung me upside down-His smile was telling me that,haha}
With that done,let's move on--
P2; Done looking at my documents,Tell us everything about your work-ex.
I:Told
P1; More questions on work-ex.He wanted to be absolutely sure if I knew everything about the firm and that I actually worked for it or was I faking as I said I work with my family.
I; Told everything.Questions were on verticals the company operates on, its turnover, employee strength,my responsibility etc etc.
P2; Some more questions about my brother.
I: Told.
Moving on from this part-----
P1: You have majored in IT.You are working in a facilities management company.Justify.
I; Told them, I dint like IT,did as best as could in college but it wasn't good enough.I did not like the fact that I did not learn much in 4 years.Made a hurried decision in jumping the IT bandwagon. Now I wanted a change, and want to do something that I really enjoy doing. So started working with my brother.Though it's different. But I enjoy what I do.Straight faced.
P2:Why did you pursue IT then?
I; Sirrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr, It was a hurried decision, I liked the Internet and computers and thought pursuing IT would be fun.I was 17 then and I'd be honest- this was my rationale behind going in for IT.
P2: Then what did you not like about IT.
I; The core science, the programming. I would do whatever best I could but still end up getting 60% scores when the best scores were close to 90.More importantly, I wasn't really learning anything.I figured it out that I don't belong here and need to move on to greener pastures and hence figured out what my strengths were/are and what that best possible path for me would be to excel in life. Before he said anything,I said, yes, hence an MBA.
P1; So you have made an informed decision this time unlike before.
I; Yes.I absolutely want this.
P2;What kind of a job do you want after your MBA.
I:Sirrrrrr,I lack business knowledge right now,I dont possess a sharp acumen in that regard.I am here to learn first, and whatever job fits me best after the MBA,I'd take that. Not thought about the kind of job as such.I am more interested in being an able help to my brother. He needs quality managers,I want to be one of those. The jobs shall follow sir.::
P2; Other calls.
I; IMI,IMT-G,KJ SOMAIYA,FORE,XIMB.
P2; Wrote them down on a paper in front of me and asked me what do you know about these colleges.Forget about GIM for now.
I; And this is where I slammed shut the door on my face.Sir I had applied to these colleges because I wanted a college in Delhi/Mumbai/something close to mumbai.Usne kya poocha and maine kya bola.and kyun bola.LOL.
P2; Smiling,XIMB in Delhi?
I; Smiling,HAHA, Sir Sir Sir, it is ACTUALLY one of the best colleges that considers the XAT scores after XL,so I went in for XIM-B too.:banghead::banghead::banghead:{I have not been able to connect all the dots in life as yet.}
P2: Okay, So from IMI,IMT-G,FORE,KJ,XIMB- what would you pick.Forget about GIM.:banghead:
I: IMI-Delhi, Sir.
P2; Why?
I; I had lost track of the interview by then. Said sir, 3 of my family members have done their MBA from IMI-D and are doing well in life and given the calls that I have,if I converted IMI,with their experience, suggest me to go and join IMI.And I'll go with their word Sir.
Both looked at each other, nodded their heads and said Thank You.You may leave.
And I left.
P.S. This was my experience,I tend to get emotional in all interviews.Had prepared totally different answers but don't know why I said what I said. Was advised against answering in that way.I am candid about life.I have a lot of calls this season,Done with 4 as of now.Same pattern of answers in all the interviews throughout.About the GD,I really suck at GD's.Have been trying to improve upon it.Today was a bad day.I was soo lost.LoL.Any feedback from anyone would be appreciated,I am not doing well at all in the GDPI's.
P.P.S. About the group that I had for the slot, totally chilling guys and a GD queen.hehe.
Hi Seniors.../frenzzz..../
