AUTOMOBILE ENGINEERING DEPARTMENT

Just spend a few minutes, look around your surroundings to understand the importance of automobile engineering. It's easy to see the role that these engineers are playing in continuous development of modern vehicles and other related technologies. Automotive engineers are involved in the design, manufacture, operation and maintenance of ground-based vehicles, such as motorcycles, cars, buses, trucks, earthmovers, agriculture, farm machinery and special purpose vehicles and their respective engineering subsystems. They are involved in the whole product design lifecycle from the initial concept to delivery

The Indian auto industry is one of the largest in the world with an annual production of 23.37 million vehicles in FY 2014-15, following a growth of 8.68 per cent over the last year. The automobile industry accounts for 7.1 per cent of the country's gross domestic product (GDP). India is also a prominent auto exporter and has strong export growth expectations for the near future. In FY 2014-15, automobile exports grew by 15 per cent over the last year. In addition, several initiatives by the Government of India and the major automobile players in the Indian market are expected to make India a leader in the Two Wheeler and Four Wheeler market in the world by 2020. Government of India aims to make automobiles manufacturing the main driver of 'Make in India' initiative, as it expects passenger vehicles market to triple to 9.4 million units by 2026, as highlighted in the Auto Mission Plan (AMP) 2016-26

Automotive Design is the number one determinant for a customer while selecting automotive products. It is a process of creativity and innovation channeled towards the development of tradable automotive products and services in a multi-disciplinary manner that involves the sciences of materials technology, engineering, ergonomics and manufacturing. To impart this highly knowledgeable skill Automobile engineering department of faculty of engineering and technology is offering two programees B. Tech- Automobile Engineering & M. Tech- Automotive Engineering (Specialization in Design). These programmes are designed to enable the students with appropriate background to specialize their careers towards automotive Technologies and design. The objective of the programs is to strengthen the ability of the student to solve complex technological problems by creative designs with  the help of software tools that enable them to easily craft and adjust the product's emotional content through their designs. The programme will develop skills of the student to work effectively in close collaboration within a multidisciplinary team and facilitates to develop R&D competency. Since India is a recognized hub of global automotive manufacturers, these courses are committed to produce automotive engineers with creative capabilities and caliber to solve challenging problems and is in tune with current requirements of Auto Industry. The programmes will strengthen the ability of the student to solve complex technological problems and product's emotional content by creative designs and software tools. On completion a candidate will work effectively in close collaboration with a multidisciplinary team of R&D professionals, since the designed curriculum is based on the latest techniques and needs of Auto industry.

The students are exposed to various relevant topics like design of automobile components (both manual and computer aided), types of fuels used in automobiles with their property analysis, different types of energy losses in the vehicle, latest technology and standards used in engine design and manufacturing, air conditioning in the automobiles, dynamics of motor vehicles, vibration analysis, vehicle maintenance and auto electrical and electronics. Along with this, subjects such as strength of materials, manufacturing technology, fluid mechanics, heat transfer, industrial engineering and workshop technology are also taken care of. Hands on training is provided to the students in the specialized laboratories of vehicle maintenance, fuel and lubricant, I.C Engines, auto electrical and electronics, vehicle design etc. Softwares such as ProE, MATLAB and Solid Works are being taught on workstations for design and development of vehicles.

To enhance the acceptability of the students by the auto industry and to enhance their skill and knowledge base the department has tie up with Indian Oil Corp. Ltd CSIR-Indian Institute of Petroleum (CSIR IIP) Dehradun and Automotive Skill Development Council.

Automobile engineers are highly in demand nowadays because of the high proliferation of automobiles in everyday life all over the world. Maruti Suzuki, Toyota, Volkswagen, Tata Motors, Hyundai, Mahindra & Mahindra, Ashok Leyland, Hindustan Motors etc. are some of the leading automobile manufacturers in the country who are showing an interest in our students. The automobile manufacturing industry is supplemented by OEMs, such as JBM, Krishna Maruti, Sharda Motors Ginnie solution, Institute of Road Traffic Education, HKS Auto, TCS, Square Yards, Harrison Associates, Blue Sapphire, Newgen Software technologies, Honeywell, Eternity Industries Pvt Ltd. etc who frequently visit the campus for placement. Of course, other fields are also open to these engineers where they can find suitable jobs. Some of these areas are defence forces, space programme, atomic energy, power plants, railways, research laboratories, software development, information technology etc. Some students, with meritorious academic records and matching skills, had opted for higher studies in both National and International universities.

Automobile Engg Department runs SAE Collegiate Club for its students interested in showcasing their practical knowledge at national and international level. The objective of participation in these competitions is to provide students with a challenging project that involves design, engineering, planning, manufacturing and marketing the tasks for a new product. Students of the department have participated in International events Shell Eco Marathon, SAE Baja International and FSG Germany and in national events SAE Baja, SAE Supra, SAE Efficycle, SAE Go Kart Championship and Grid-Tech events. The team of students has participated in Shell Eco Marathon 2012 competition at Sepang International Circuit Kuala-lumpur, Malaysia. The team was selected for Shell Eco Marathon 2013 and was among one of the 4 teams to represent India. Dr. Pallam Raju, Minister Human Resource Development, Government of India, flagged-off the teams at New Delhi. The Team also participated in Shell Eco Marathon 2014 (Manila, Philippines) and Formula Student Germany 2014 (Hockenheim, Germany). Students of the dept had participated at Grid Tech 2015 held at Pragati Maidan and won the third prize among 40 shortlisted teams from India.

Students are given regular exposure and awareness about manufacturing processes through industrial visits. Some of the manufacturing units that were visited in 2015 are Honda Siel Cars India Ltd. (HSCI) Greater Noida, Rosa Thermal Power Plant, Shahjahanpur (U.P.) Krishna Maruti Ltd. Gurgaon and AAR ESS Auto Private Ltd, Faridabad.

The Faculty members of the Department have been actively involved in Research and Development activities in the field of alternative fuels, heat transfer, new engine development, vibration analysis in vehicles etc. They had published their work in renowned National and International Journals, conferences and also filed patents in their area of research.

The Department conducted workshops titled "Future trends in automobile sector",  "Engine overhauling Fault diagnosis and Wheel balancing" and "SAE International President and Student Meet" in 2012, 2013 and 2015. The objective of these workshops was to apprise faculty members and students about the emerging areas of technology in automobiles. The Department also organized a National Conference titled, 'Alternate Fuels and Controls' in March, 2013, sponsored by DRDO in which prominent personalities from the auto sector delivered their expert thought to our aspiring engineering students.
