For all three categories, students were given caselets (for general management and for innovative marketing) and rules for building their idea (for entrepreneurship) in advance and the students emailed their responses to the PaGaLGuY.com team.

Indeed, it was heartening to see the number of responses that the event generated amongst the enthusiastic students of IBA, in spite of the short notice that the students got. The fact that these students were just a week into the courses spoke volumes of how they have structured their thought processes in tackling business issues.

The day started off with the visiting trio giving a brief overview of PaGaLGuY.com to all the MBAs-in-making and how the community has grown over the years. Due to the paucity of time, next on agenda was round 1 of the process where each student that had submitted an entry was to be interviewed by one of the PG team. The team from PG then divided the entrants into three distinct groups based on the categories that the students participated in. The general management category saw the most participation from the IBA students. More than a few enterprising students also took the opportunity to submit their entries just before the start of the round 1 of elimination.

The shortlisted candidates

The team from PG was definitely impressed by some of the entries which clearly gave away the depth of thought and innovation in implementing workarounds to what the students saw as common pain points. The round 1 stretched well into the afternoon and by the time, the interviewing of all students was done, it was well past 2pm. The team from PG then went on to have a lunch at the in-house canteen of IBA. During lunch, the interactions with the IBA students clearly showed how some of the students have their reasons for MBA all right and how they were taking advantage of what IBA had to offer, in terms of opportunities.

From round 1, 4-5 students for each category were short listed and were informed prior lunch that they were to get prepared for further questioning on their submission in round 2. To avoid any perceptual bias, it was decided that round 2 will be a group interview of the candidate and his/her submission by all the three members from PG. It was interesting to see how some of the students were clearly meticulous in their planning and preparation in presenting their case to the interviewing panel. At the end of round 2, it was indeed turning out to be the proverbial tough decision in deciding the winners of the scholarship. This was more so the case with the entrepreneurship category where the team from PG felt that two candidates had very good and implementable ideas. After a lot of deliberations, and discussions with PGHQ as well as IBA management, it was finally decided that in the interest of fairness, the award amount be split between the two participants. Finally, at the end of a long day, the four recipients of the PaGaLGuY.com Maverick Manager were decided.

General Management - Prerna Duhan
Innovative Marketing - V Ganesh
Entrepreneurship - Shiv Kumar Pandey and Ganesh Iyer

Ravin K, one of the students interviewed for the scholarship said, “I came to know about the scholarship through Pagalguy. The three people from Pagalguy who came to interview us for the scholarships gave us a great learning experience by making us think on touch and on-depth questions. My business plan was about opening a tiffin business in Ahmedabad on the lines of Mumbai. Despite having spent five months in the hospitality industry, the panelists' questions showed me that I had overlooked many things in my plan.”

“The Maverick Manager Scholarship was constituted by IBA to identify and nurture talented students. The new entrants were not aware that they would be participating in such a contest even before they had adjusted to their new environment. Hardly a fortnight at IBA, and they were enthusiastic to participate in a contest that was to identify the latent entrepreneurial and managerial abilities in them,” said Mr Rakesh Bhaskar of IBA on the exercise.

“However, at the final round of presentations and interviews, it was evident that the best candidates in each category had been identified. These students were at their competitive best, fighting with their wits yet in a spirit of camaraderie. It was obviously the place to identify the hidden talents in many of these bright youngsters,” he added.

“The presentations were well done – realistic and well thought out. There were strong elements of strategic thinking coupled with a holistic approach. These could be made into viable business propositions with help and guidance. This was indeed a good start to their 2 year program at IBA where they would learn to further hone these innate skills. We wish these motivated and talented students a very bright future, who will do themselves and IBA proud. I am happy to be with the Pagalguy forum and explore more avenues for the students' cause.” he mused.

The team from PaGaLGuY thoroughly enjoyed the interaction with the aspiring MBA students and took away memorable thoughts with the promise of returning next year with a Maverick Manager Scholarship that is more encompassing in its scope and more rigorous in its selection.

Some of the bigwigs like Mr Jiggy George, Director, Cartoon Network, Aman Kothari, Head, International Marketing, Godrej & Boyce, Riddham Desai, Country Manager, Morgan Stanley will share memories of cutting chai and current market strategies in the same breath. Perhaps the most notable achievement was that Intaglio was recommended for ISO 9001 certification. Intaglio became the first and only business school festival in India to achieve the prestigious ISO 9001 quality standard. The audit and recommendation was made by Det Norske Veritas, one of the world's leading certification bodies.

image

Last year, Intaglio attracted a huge influx of enthusiastic participants. It brought together scholars from institutions such as Harvard, Kellogg, Dartmouth's Tuck, National University of Singapore and the Asian Institute of Management in addition to those from the other IIMs and other premier institutions across the country.

image

The list of sponsors included the who's who of Indian corporations. The Times Group was the Title Sponsor, while Tata Consultancy Services was the Associate Sponsor. Sponsors of individual events included Cognizant, UBS, ITC Limited, CNBC TV18, Bank of America, Philips, Outlook, Reliance Mutual Fund, GSK, rediff.com, Motilal Oswal, Mckinsey&Company;, SAP and Business India. The Cognizant sponsored lecture series “Reverberations” was well received and had, among other speakers, Rodger Desai – CEO of Rave Wireless Inc. but better known as the “Serial Entrepreneur”.

Furthermore, the Indian Oil Corporation Ltd. sponsored Cicero's Senate, which brought together top women achievers from various walks of life to debate on significant issues. Some of the movers and shakers such as Deputy MD of ICICI, Chief Marketing Officer Wipro, International Programme Officer UN, Senior VP Morgan Stanley, Global Decision Manager TCS and Senior GM of Eveready Industries contributed to an enriching session.

image

A wide variety of intensely competitive events, case study competitions and paper presentations were held on the entire spectrum of business functions such as finance, marketing, systems, operations, consulting and strategy. While IIMC managed to hold onto the prestigious “Swiss Knife” trophy for overall excellence in Intaglio, ISB Hyderabad pipped 2 IIMC teams to win the Quizzical event conducted by the renowned quizmaster Joy Bhattacharya. The team from NUS Singapore won the award for the best foreign team.

Euphoria's performance gave a fitting conclusion to IIMC's Intaglio 2005-06. The cultural night finale – Regalio - of the international B-school meet organized by IIMC saw all the participants and students dancing to the melodious songs which have rocked the nation over the years. After four days of intellectually stimulating games, quizzes, lecture series and host of workshops participants and the organizers got a chance to let their hair down and party till late at night.

Traditionally, the Chartered Accountant degree has been considered the epitome of financial qualification in India. The reasons are much the same as why an MBA from an IIM is considered so good in the field of management education. But times are changing. The CA, although very relevant, is specific to India in much the same way as a CPA is to the US and leans more towards auditing. With India powering its way into the global finance arena, Indians can now be found in senior positions in the biggest investment banking companies of the world.

And one rung of the ladder that takes them to those heights is having qualifications that are globally recognized rather than being specific to countries. The problem with most such qualifications till now has been the necessity for candidates to travel out of the country to take the exams. Added to this were the prohibitive costs involved and a lack of uniform recognition around the world.

The Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) designation offered by the CFA Institute, an organization based in the US of A addresses a few of these concerns if not all. For starters it is respected worldwide. The CFA Institute, on its website, calls the CFA as the “gold standard” in financial education. Not without reason too. A Russell Reynolds study quoted on the CFA Institute website talks about CFA-charter holding individuals out-earning their peers by over 50 pc across experience levels. It also mentions that between a CFA and an MBA it is the CFAs who demand a higher average salary. Another source, the Financial Times in an article published in June spoke about how the value of the charter is even higher in Asian economies like India and China.

But all this excitement comes at a cost too. It takes an average of 20,000 rupees to take each of the three exams needed to be cleared to get the CFA designation. Add to this a one time registration of 18,000 and it becomes an exam where not passing can be an expensive proposition. So considering a market like India, how does this investment pay-off?

To answer this question let us try and understand what the CFA Program actually involves in terms of content. Roughly speaking, the CFA is something like a Masters in Finance (or an MBA in Finance), although the CFA tends to be more investment banking focused. Post clearing the exams the market will consider you fairly adept at the intricacies of finance like Financial Statement Analysis, Investment Instruments etc. All this is relevant in the financial services industry and these are the people that will most probably pick you up once you are a CFA charter holder.

The financial services industry in India is booming, breaking records every year for everything from foreign acquisitions to value added outsourcing. The sensex has its own tale to tell with markets booming. (The BSE Sensex of course has a way of reneging almost anything said about it in press so it might just have recorded a record crash by the time this article goes to press). In other words, the context has been set for India to become the financial services hub of the world not unlike London and New York.

The primary employment opportunity is with Investment Banks, Private Equity firms, Equity Research and KPOs. Each seems to value the knowledge base that the CFA seems to bring to the table. The good news is that you do not need to clear all three levels to be considered for jobs. Every level leads to an enhanced career path. Organizations like JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America Corp., Citibank, etc. are not only keen to take CFAs but also encourage their employees to take the exam with some of them even financing the course for employees. Salaries easily start from 6 lakhs p.a. for a Level I Candidate and obviously it just gets better.

The number of Indians going in for this exam is increasing at an incredible rate. Sample this: When the CFA Institute, based in Charlottesville, Virginia, first held its exams in India in 1993, there were two candidates who took the exam. This rose to 1,288 in December 2004 and close to 5,000 Indian students took the test on the 3rd of December this year.

Who should go in for the CFA Exam?

The qualification would make sense to people with a wide variety of profiles. The most interested might be BMS and BCom graduates looking to enter the financial industry with an international qualification or as an alternative (or even in addition) to the CA. MBAs looking to enhance their finance credentials almost always end up taking this route as an entry strategy in to I-Banks. And of course investment banking professionals still form the largest section of people taking this exam.

So what does it take to become a CFA Charter Holder?

Basic Requirements to appear for the Exam:

  • Have a U.S. bachelor's (or equivalent) degree, be in the final year of your bachelor's degree program, or have four years of qualified, professional work experience or a combination of work and college experience that totals at least four years
  • Meet the professional conduct admission criteria (during the application process, you will be asked to sign statements of Professional Conduct and Candidate Responsibility)

Examination Procedure:

All three exams are administered on paper, on a single day; the Level I exam is administered twice a year (usually the first weekend of June and December). The Level II and III exams are administered once a year, usually the first weekend of June.
Both Level I and Level II are entirely multiple choice with no negative marking, while Level III consists of a session of short-answer questions and a session that is multiple choice.
Exams are challenging, with only 34% Indian pass rate for the Level I exam in June 2006.

How much time, money?

There are two parts to the designation. Firstly you have to clear the three levels sequentially. Secondly, you have to apply for the charter by supplying the 4 year relevant work experience along with the three level clearances. Clearing the three levels takes at least two years. If you do not have any work experience then the entire process can take 6 years. The good news is that you do not have to wait for even 2 years to apply to companies. Clearing one level leads to a considerable improvement in the employment prospects in the financial industry. And after completing all three levels, it becomes simply a matter of time before receiving the Charter.

In the final scheme of things the CFA program has a few obvious advantages over the other degrees. The most important is that candidates can prepare and take this exam along with a full time job. With respect to the cost it is around one-fifth of the expenses of an MBA in India Add to all this the fact that it is a degree recognized all over the world and it all comes down to a pretty good option to consider when looking at financial markets as a career.

Fest O'Comm is a celebration of all fields that are related to communication—ranging from advertising, journalism, filmmaking and photography, to publishing, public relations and corporate communications. It has something for anyone interested in the media industry and even for those who are looking at completely different professions. From seminars to rock shows, the festival has it all and has never failed to thrill both its audience and speakers, year after year.

Held over four days, Fest O'Comm is a unique opportunity for students to rub shoulders with eminent personalities from the industry and interact with them through various workshops and competitions. Fest O'Comm 2007 is the culmination of Footprints 2006, which was a series of media seminars held in eight cities spread across the country.

This year, Fest O'Comm celebrates Tatva—the elements. And true to its theme, Fest O'Comm will feature the fervor of fire, the subtlety of water, the poise of earth and the omnipresence of air.

Similar to the four elements converging for the genesis of nature, and life thriving as a result of this confluence, the different elements of the communication world are coming together to bring the creative life force into action. Each element has its own significance and role in nature, akin to the four facets of communication, which cater to various needs of the society and business alike.

AGNI - Fire (Journalism): Ignites your mind
The field of journalism is similar to the element of fire as both symbolize passion and courage. It ignites minds and spearheads the voice of the masses.

JAL - Water (Public Relations): Mighty, yet subtle

Like water, the role of PR is to seamlessly blend with other communication processes. The beauty of a PR activity is in its subtlety. Yet, it is one of the most powerful tools and is garnering more strength and significance with every passing day.

BHOOMI - Earth (Advertising): Racing for the mind-field
Earth is the material part of nature, as is advertising wherein lies all the action. It is all about conquering the mind space of the consumers –the bigger, the better (no pun intended!).

VAYU - Air (A/V): Ethereal & omnipresent

As air is all-encompassing and still we can't hold it in our hands, just feel its presence. audio- visual is all pervasive, still 'larger than life'. It is an extension of our reality and simultaneously, a manifestation of our fantasies.

Fest O' Comm 2007 features a large number of workshops conducted by the who's who of media. Later in the day, the campus will be swinging to pulsating music and vibrant colors as the fashion shows, music & dance performances and the rock concert mark an end to the day.

There are competitions galore, like mad ads, painting and quizzes. The cultural events of Fest O'Comm are better, swankier and more innovative this time. One of the most important events is the fashion show. An event, which showcases the latest trends in fashion with the budding style gurus of the city, it has already generated tremendous enthusiasm in Pune, as well as from colleges from other cities.

A huge attraction at this festival is the Mr. and Ms. Fest O'Comm contest. Three challenging rounds will have participants competing for the coveted title.
Mr. and Miss. Fest O'Comm is an event, which will select the best of the best among the participants, not only on the basis of their looks, but also on their intelligence and overall confidence level.

Another crowd puller is the dance competition. This time, there will be both solo and group events. The former is a freestyle event, where everyone will have the freedom to take up a theme and choreograph a performance of their choice, while the group event has to be based on any one of the five themes of 'Tatva'.

A media seminar without the real feel of the industry would be unfair to the thousands of media aspirants attending the fest. A mock press called Fourth Estate will be organized which will act as a platform for the participants getting their fifteen-minute of fame!

Fest O'Comm will also play host to many other fun events like Dumb Charades and a photography competition. Another event that promises to be exciting is the Street Play competition called Broadway! The participant teams will be staging a play on a theme that will be given to them a mere half an hour before the play is staged.

The Sundowners, as the evening entertainment programs are called, have previously featured artists like Euphoria, Shivamani and the Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy team. This year sufi singer Kailash Kher and his band Kailasa are all set to rock Pune on the January 21,2007.

Every year, as an integral part of Fest O' Comm, Symbiosis Institute of Mass Communication confers Awards of Excellence in Media to distinguished personalities in recognition of their contribution to the industry. Over the years, the Award has been conferred upon Gulzar, Amol Palekar, Piyush Pandey, Kiran Karnik, Mahesh Bhatt, Ameen Sayani and Sai Paranjape.

Experts and media professionals shall conduct workshops and seminars on various topics covering present and future trends in media. One of the highlights of the event is the title of Professor Emeritus being presented to Mr. H. K. Dua, Editor-in-Chief, The Tribune.

On the Journalism Day, January 19, 2007 prominent journalists like H. K. Dua, and Vinod Dua, well-known anchor from NDTV will be among the luminaries addressing the students.
On the Audio-Visual Day, January 20,2007 well-known performers and filmmakers shall grace the festival. Danseuse Mallika Sarabhai; Sony's creative head, Sandiip Sickand; anchor and chairman of Encompass, Roshan Abbas are some of the eminent personalities who shall talk about the glamorous world of film and television.

On the MarComm Day, January 21, 2007, the audience shall learn the tricks of the trade from industry professionals like Balkrishnan, National Creative Director, Lowe; Deepak Jolly, Corporate Communications Head, Coca Cola; Sanjay Singh, VP, Public Affairs, TATA; Mahesh Chauhan, President, Rediffusion among others.

Come and witness the fusion of intellect with talent and culture with innovation, at Fest O'Comm 2007.

Colleges interested in participating need to register online before January 10, 2007. Every college is allowed a contingent of a maximum of 15 members.

In its launch year, Pune gave a grand start to IQ. Pune repeated this history for IQ where the line to enter the event extended to 100 meters outside the venue. For the first time the Armed Forces Medical College students participated in this event and also was one of the six teams to participate in the city finals. Symbiosis Societies Law College won this event.

Over 272 teams who participated in the preliminary round hailed IQ, at Nagpur. The hall capacity at the IQ venue in Nagpur was 600 and we had over 800 students pouring in to participate in the event. 70 teams (200 students) took the preliminaries (25 questions) squatted in the gangways, on stage and beyond the exit door. The preliminaries eliminated over 100 teams and took the event to its climax with the city finalists trying to tackle the questions IQ was throwing at them. The eliminated teams stayed back to cheer the intense competition between VNIT and SRKNEC. VNIT won the quiz on the second last buzzer question.

IMS Quotient at Kolkata did well too, with 85 teams participating in the finals in spite of a long vacation and repeated strikes. NUJS-National University of Judicial Sciences won the quiz. IQ, at Patna received a warm welcome from the student community. 240 teams registered for the event and awaited IQ to reach their city. The sharp-witted students put in their best effort to qualify for the city final. Finally, students of the Anugrah Narayan College proved themselves the best of the lot by winning the IQ in Patna.

A 10 day Study Tour to Australia for the National Winner along with their Institute Head plus a Rs. One lakh grant for the winning institute from the N.R.Rane Trust. A 2 day Goa cruise for the First Runners-up and bikes, laptops and i-pods for the other winners. The effect was similar to a new SRK blockbuster pulling crowds at a movie hall.

From the West. To the rest of India.
The IQ had begun its quizzing run at Pune in 2006, with great success following suit. The city's 'lucky charm' quite naturally made it the Starting Point for IQ 2007 as well.
And boy, was it the right decision! IQ 2007 came calling and Pune answered with cheer, in unison. The city witnessed participation on a wider scale with colleges that stayed away from the quiz in 2006 also coming in. The Armed Forces Medical College was one such institute. Any trepidation of whether the IQ would be able to pull off a second run was blasted away by Pune's overwhelming response. From here on, the quiz organizers – IMS, got the conviction and courage to take the quiz across the country with full-hearted confidence. Confidence, in fact, would play a bigger role than envisaged in keeping the Quiz on track for the rest of its schedule. Here's why. The Quiz could only be held on weekends. And you had 4 weekends to cover 24 cities. This meant the Quiz would be entering multiple cities on the same day for the rest of its schedule. In fact, some days saw the Quiz running simultaneously in as many as 4 cities at the same time. What would give any professional event management team sleepless nights, IMS teams carried out perfectly well without any major glitches. What's the secret? Common sense, quick thinking and that attribute we talked about earlier, confidence.

House-full everywhere
The auditoriums were just not big enough to hold participants in any city.
Here are glimpses of what ensued in a few cities. In Nagpur, the hall capacity was 600 whereas the students numbered to 800 plus. As a result, the Qualifiers were held both inside the auditorium and outside. In Bhubhaneswar, not one but two halls, adjacently located, were eventually used to hold the qualifiers. Also, since one hall had a screen while the other hadn't, visual-based questions were dropped from the Quiz format. In Lucknow, one hall witnessed two Qualifiers, back to back, to accommodate all the entrants. Students took the Qualifiers in the aisles, on the steps, outside the auditoriums, and in some cases, even on the streets. And surprisingly, no one complained. Though the venues lacked on space, not one quiz enthusiast was sent back. In all, the IQ 2007 saw over 6000 teams participating, across India. That's over 18,000 students battling it out to be crowned India's Smartest 3.

The Art of Quizzing

A quiz is only as good as its Quizmaster. IQ 2007 deployed 8 quizmasters with the Grand Master being none other than Charanpreet. A huge hit with quiz takers in IQ 2006, Charanpreet scaled up the intensity and interest quotient of questions in IQ 2007.
So how does a Quizmaster choose his questions? The quick-witted, IIT-Kanpur and Iowa University MBA Alumnus had this to say “I choose my questions from every genre of life. There is a trick however, in the manner you choose your questions. If your questions are such that no one has ever heard of them, then you have a dead quiz on your hands. The beauty of IQ is, the answers to a lot of the questions are somewhere at the back of your head. The response I aimed to generate at the quiz was “Damn! I knew that. Think, Think!”

Grand Finale. Grand Locale.
Everything about a good sequel has to score over the predecessor. Everything including the ending. And the climax of IQ 2007 couldn't have been any grander. The 24 teams making it through the 24 City Finals were invited to Mumbai to get on board India's premium luxury cruise liner – the Superstar Libra for the Semi-finals and Finals. The closing stages of IQ 2007 took place over a 2 day cruise along the Mumbai-Goa corridor.
There were 3 Semi-finals, each witnessing fast and furious action between 8 teams to propel 2 entrants into the Finals. Many a time, spectators end up getting disappointed with a much awaited cricket or tennis final. With the IQ 2007 Grand Finale, there was no such possibility in the remotest sense. These were the 6 smartest student teams in the country and their wide knowledge and quick responses didn't afford anyone the time to loosen their nerves. The result was a nail-bitingly intense tie break. St. Stephens - Delhi and IIT – Madras tied at 100. NIT – Calicut at 95. Symbiosis Law College – Pune and IIT – Mumbai tied at 90. And NIT Trichy chasing the rest at 40. Incidentally, the IIT – Mumbai team had the same 3 students who won the first IMS Quotient in 2006. They were however, pipped to the post this year by St. Stephens – Delhi. That makes Arka Banerjee, Justin Thomas and Gautam Das the Smartest 3 Collegians in India.

So was IQ 2007 just a quiz?

The answer to this question is best articulated by IMS' Head of Marketing - John Gabriel “The IMS Quotient is more than just a hunt for the Smartest Collegian Trio. A successful student is a well-rounded individual, one whose learning goes beyond academics. The IQ provides students with the motivation to pursue, if I may coin the term, 'extra-academic' learning and also the platform to exhibit and celebrate this learning”. The IMS Quotient was a sincere endeavour from IMS to help nurture the passion for knowledge seeking in students across India. The road to fully achieving this vision will see many more IQs coming along the way.

A business school that blends the best of academics and hands-on industry experience to offer a one-year program that puts the advantage completely on your side. True to our baseline, “Learning for the real world”, our programs are tailored to make you industry-ready, with lessons by professionals from the industry as well as a solid bank of trained academicians.

imageSpanning every area that's making waves in our world today, from Retail to IT, from HRM to Marcom, from Marketing to ITES, CBS courses are the smart choices available to those with more than just plain old ambition. With lessons drawn from the business world around us, and training modules focused on the industry's requirements, CBS chalks out a route that goes far beyond a textbook, to make your learning not just relevant, but also useful.

As Jyotsna R. specialising in the Retail vertical says “I joined CBS to learn the nuances of management and pursue a career in Food Retailing, after studying Nutrition and Dietetics. This one year at CBS has changed my life in terms of the way I perceive things, and has also empowered me to take decisions and handle responsibilities. For instance, listening to people like Mr.Radhakrishnan, CEO, Hypermarkets, Reliance Retail, helped me appreciate much more, the strong link between textbook concepts and real world corporate practices. All the holistic learning I've had over this one year has made me realise the various dimensions of my personality.”

Classes follow no one pattern; they change hues and formats in order to best accommodate the constantly morphing demands of work. The carefully planned programs synergistically address two key concerns of industry: the acute demand-supply imbalance, and the chasm between the perspective and skill-sets that industry requires versus what management education institutions are able to create. Established to empower, rather than just educate, to fuel ambition rather than just feed it, even the campus reflects the vision and leadership of our distinguished captains of industry. That probably explains why 50% of our students got appointment letters even before they started classes.

In the words of Dean AS Srinivasan, “One basic criterion for admission to CBS is ATTITUDE. We place more emphasis on the candidate's attitude towards his/her chosen area of specialisation, since we strongly feel that this is what makes the difference between ordinary and outstanding performance in the real business world.

“Also, we believe that we should be developing real managers, not pretending to create them in the classroom, hence our motto - "Learning for the real world". Our emphasis is on industry leaders sharing their real world experiences, which can be related to management concepts. So learning at CBS is based on using best-in-class business practices to understand management concepts, rather than the other way around – using management concepts to understand business practices.”

The team behind CBS features some formidable names: industry professionals who have a combined work experience over 100 years, and knowledge to inspire and motivate each one of the students to excel in what they're best at. Mr. P.K. Mohapatra, President & CEO, Technology Business Sector, RPG Enterprises, Mr. J.N. Amrolia, Executive Director, Ashok Leyland, are just a few of the minds working behind the scenes at CBS. Their vision goes a long way in differentiating CBS form any other management program.

CBS offers 5 fields to choose from, 7 management specialisation options that are revolutionising the way people want and buy brands, and even the way economies are structured. Here's a quick look at them:

Human Resources Management (HRM), which has grown today to play a vital role in tomorrow's business world, spelling excellent career growth opportunities.

Marketing Management and Marketing Communication Management, ushered in on the new waves of liberalisation and globalisation that have introduced international brands in almost all product/service categories, opening up marketing in India to unforeseen levels of innovation and opportunity.

Retail, the next big thing that's headed our way, with unexpected growth witnessed in the recent years, with the establishment of international quality formats modified to suit the Indian purchase behaviour, entry of several domestic and international players, development of retail-specific properties and improvement in retail processes.

Telecom, the popular and much loved child of globalisation, greater deregulation, availability of cutting-edge technology and entry of major players, all of which have made the telecom industry one of the fastest growing and most promising industries in India.

Information Technology, one of the largest industry verticals. In India, constituted by two key components of software and hardware business. Today, IT has become synonymous with rise of the Indian Software exports industry and has the distinction of having created the maximum amount of jobs in India in the past 5 years and today employs over 500,000 professionals.

All of these areas are spurred on by the youngest of minds and the sharpest of intellects. Naturally, they create endless opportunities for students to dive in and have the most fun, even as they learn the skills and know-how to perform well in their jobs, right from

Day 1

Ask Deepak Rao about a typical CBS class. “After 23 sessions on learning to make choices between 'efficiency' and 'responsiveness' in designing a supply chain, we had a really great learning experience with Prof. Raghavendra Ravi in his session on Supply Chain Management.

“…watch out for technological development with all your senses wide open. Technology may help you achieve both. Dell Computers is a classic example,” Prof.Ravi said, just before he distributed the case study for classroom discussion”. Deepak's experience captures the new norm. Education that's informative, empowering and more importantly, a great way to further your interest in an area and capitalise on your natural aptitude.

That's where education is headed. To greater heights of relevance, effectiveness and enjoyment. So if it's a meaningful learning experience you want, combined with a place that gives your plans for the future the perfect launch, step in to CBS. And discover that the best time to make a smart decision for your career is now.

'Shaping careers, building lives', the organization's vision, gives direction to every activity organized. Keeping the CAT aspirants as the primary focus, IMS, allows all the non-IMS students to take one of the SimCATs. The Open SimCAT is held across the country, at more than 100 venues, multiple venues for every test location. IMS picks up multiple venues for Open SimCAT to allow maximum number of students to benefit from the test.

Best of the talented minds take the CAT every year. Preparation for this particular test doesn't mean rote learning and taking notes. The CAT concepts once learnt need to be put to test. The real preparation begins when the CAT aspirant understands where he stands vis-à-vis the competition.

The Open SimCAT has immense reach. Held across the country, the test has the largest base of CAT aspirants taking the test. The test gives students a chance to get a flavor of real competition. Open SimCAT simulates the CAT scenario to an extent that the test is held at the same venues as the CAT. The simulation is absolutely CAT-like, so as to enable students to better deal with the test day fear and anxiety.

IMS has been observing the CAT and dealing with the students for past 30 years. The experience and expertise allows IMS to design the SimCAT papers closest to actual CAT. The evolving significance of management education and the corresponding effect on the CAT test paper pattern is taken into consideration while designing the SimCAT papers.

Last year, the Open SimCAT was a huge success amongst the student community. The IMS' test setting team crafted the paper so innovative in terms of structure and pattern that the Math section had poetry in it. The paper was a googly for all the test takers. The CAT changes every year, no one can predict it. Acknowledging these challenges, Open SIMCAT 2006 with its exceptional format prepared students for the unseen, the unexpected. The test with its format made students shockproof.

Bolstered by the positive student feedback, IMS has scheduled the Open SimCAT for July 22, 2007. The test gives National Ranking, Percentile; powers students with the knowledge of their position in the talent pool. Detailed analysis, in-depth section wise feedback of the Open SimCAT gives the test takers a direction and helps them prepare for the CAT systematically.

Open SimCAT is a must take for all the CAT 07 aspirants as it will give them a chance to experience the CAT one time before the actual CAT. The test would be relevant to the CAT 2008 aspirants in many ways too. Getting into a high repute B-School has become even more challenging with the increasing competition. To experience the CAT, students need to be in their final graduation year. But, CAT aspirants today prefer to start their preparation earlier than that. In their sophomore year itself, students start readying themselves for the CAT. Open SimCAT 2007 will give them a chance to experience the CAT sooner than they actually can. IMS, a student centric organization has always believed in giving value to the students and they will continue to do the same by making Open SimCAT available to the CAT aspirants for free.

The Open SimCAT was designed to make the students CAT-ready. The CAT can be tamed by those who manage to remain composed under any given test scenario. While conceptual clarity and management aptitude are the requisites for taking the CAT; poise, confidence and presence of mind are instrumental for succeeding at the test. Open SimCAT format checked the CAT aspirants on all these areas.

The IMS' Academic Innovation Wing last year had crafted the paper so inventive in terms of structure and pattern that the Math section had poetry in it. “I am a non-IMS student and while giving this paper I really felt that I was giving CAT: for the reason that it was a completely unexpected paper,” said Nikki, another SimCAT taker. Last year's Open SimCAT became popular with the student community for the shock it gave them.

Hence, bolstered by all the positive student feedback on last year's Open SimCAT, IMS has scheduled this year's SimShock for the 4th November 2007.

To better assist the CAT aspirants across the country, IMS allows the non-IMS students to take the SimShock. SimShock is a must take for all the CAT 07 aspirants as it will give them a chance to experience the CAT one time before the actual CAT.

The test would be relevant to the CAT 2008 aspirants in many ways too. Getting into a high repute B-School has become even more challenging with the increased competition. To experience the CAT, students need to be in their final graduation year. But, CAT aspirants today prefer to start their preparation earlier than that. In their sophomore year itself, students start readying themselves for the CAT.

The SimShock this time will be shocking enough to make news. The test will power the students with the knowledge of their exact standing amidst the thousands preparing for the CAT. To register for the SimShock you can visit the nearest IMS centre or you can register at the venue to get cracking. For further details you can click on this link http://www.imsindia.com/simshock/.

The Beginnings

Dr Kiran Seth, a young graduate from IIT Kharagpur, was studying for his doctorate at the University of Columbia, when he chanced to attend a Dhrupad concert by Ustad Nasir Aminuddin Dagar and Ustad Zia Fariduddin Dagar. When Dr Seth returned to India to teach at IIT Delhi in 1977, he involved the students and SPIC MACAY was born.
The initial activities of SPIC MACAY were confined to IIT – Delhi. Soon, however, other schools and colleges started asking for similar activities to be initiated in their institutions. Artists began to give of their time for a very nominal honorarium - they too were convinced of the need to sensitize young men and women to our cultural heritage. The movement spread in Delhi and, over the years, across the length and breadth of the country. SPIC MACAY today has 200 chapters, a number of them overseas.

SPIC MACAY Today

SPIC MACAY conducts two major activities each year called FEST and VIRASAT simultaneously in many cities and towns of India. The FEST series takes place in the months of January to April while the VIRASAT takes place from July to November While the FEST series is largely focused on Indian classical music and dance; during VIRASAT we expose students to a wider variety of art forms like Yoga, meditation, theatre, folk arts etc in addition to classical music and dance.

SPIC MACAY concerts now for the past many years have become regular features in Mumbai's music calendar. In 2007, having completed 30 years of existence, the movement enjoys tremendous goodwill among the artist community as well as schools and colleges. The organization has found patronage from both Government and Industry. The recently concluded series of SPIC MACAY, Virasat 2007, had over 30 lecture demonstrations exposing various art forms like classical music, classical dance, folk arts in schools and colleges across Mumbai.

FEST 2008 promises to be a treat to music lovers across Mumbai with an impressive line up of artistes. Vocalist Shubha Mudgal, violinist Dr N Rajam, flautist Ronu Majumdar are few other names in the enviable list, SPIC MACAY has lined up for this series. The series will go on till 20th of March with concerts to be held in many schools and colleges across the length and breadth of the city. Some of the venues are IIT, NITIE (both Powai), UICT (Matunga), Anjuman Islam (VT), IGIDR (Goregaon), ITM (Khargar), Bal Bharati Public School (Kharghar).
SPIC MACAY has weekly meetings in every city where the volunteers meet to discuss ides, share experiences. It is also a platform for new volunteers to associate with the movement. The meetings in Delhi are held every Saturday at Lady Irwin College from 4:00 – 6:00 pm while those at Mumbai at UICT, Matunga on Saturdays from 4:30-6:30 pm. We welcome interested people to join us there.
