National Insurance Academy (NIA) was established in the year 1980 under the aegis of Ministry of Finance (Government of India); Life Insurance Corporation of India (LIC), General Insurance Corporation of India (GIC Re) and Public Sector General Insurance Companies – National Insurance Co. Ltd., The New India Assurance Co. Ltd., The Oriental Insurance Co. Ltd and United India Insurance Co. Ltd. as its promoters.
Currently the Governing Board of NIA has Chairman of LIC, Chairman-Cum-Managing Directors of GIC and Public Sector General Insurers, representative of Ministry of Finance, Government of India along with eminent independent members from Academia chosen for their unique contribution to the cause of Insurance, Education and Finance and other fields.

Curriculum design in such a way that it is a unique blend of Management and Insurance subject with emphases placed on both theory and practice
Students of NIA on completion of PGDM have exemption in Associateship examination conducted by Insurance Institute of India based on specific criteria. This gives them an edge over others in gaining insurance knowledge and good placement through campus selection
