The Indian Institute
of Technology, Bombay is one of India’s premier engineering institutions
which has a comprehensive graduate program. It offers post graduate and doctoral
degrees in Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics. Students can also pursue
humanities and social sciences such as Economics, English, Philosophy,
Psychology, Sociology and management studies. It also conducts innovative
short-term courses through continuing education and distance
education programmes. IITB is cocooned amidst lush greenery within
the hustle and bustle of Mumbai (formerly Bombay). It is located at Powai, a
suburb in north eastern Mumbai, between the Vihar and Powai lakes and is spread
over an area of 550 acres (2.2 sq.km). The Indian Institute of Technology,
Bombay (IITB), which was established in 1958, was the second IIT to be established (after IIT Kharagpur,
established in 1951). IITB’s foundation stone was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal
Nehru on 10 March 1959

The campus consists of clusters of buildings spread over lush greenery. The academic area comprises the main building, various departmental annexes and auditoria. The Infinite Corridor connects all department annexes. The hostels lie beyond the Convocation Hall. There are a total of 15 hostels, including hostels for female students. At a given time, the campus is home to more than 10,000 people: students, professors, and non-academic staff. The campus has two swimming pools, grounds for football, hockey and cricket and tennis, squash, basketball and volleyball courts. Central Library, Central Workshop, and Printing Press are also on campus. The OrthoCAD Network Research Cell was established in 2007 to jump-start indigenous research and development activities in orthopedic reconstruction systems. The campus also houses two high schools, one of which is a Kendriya Vidyalaya and the other is called IIT Campus School.

Research Programs Ph.D

IIT Bombay has 15 departments, 11 multi-disciplinary centres, and the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management. From its humble beginning with 100 students, today the Institute boasts of 880 seats for the undergraduate programme (selected through Joint Entrance Exam (JEE)), 280 seats for 2 Year M.Sc. programmes, 1000 seats for different postgraduate programmes and 450 for Ph.D. programmes every year.

The academic year is divided into two semesters, a spring semester and an autumn semester. Some additional courses are offered during the shorter summer quarter. All students admitted undergo a common academic programme for the First semester. The second semester consists of mostly common courses, except that a student must take one Departmental Introductory course (DIC) and another Departmental Optional Course (DOC). The institution follows the credit-based evaluation system.

Along with academic courses the institute also undertakes research and consultancy projects often funded by various national agencies like the Department of Science and Technology, Department of Electronics, Department of Space, Aeronautical Development Agency, Department of Atomic Energy, and Oil and Natural Gas Commission (ONGC). Many are also working on projects of national importance. A few projects are also undertaken for international agencies.

Cultural activities galore

The annual cultural festival Mood Indigo is usually held in the month of December .The annual Science & Technology festival of IIT Bombay, Techfest, is held in the month of January every year. Both these festivals are among the largest of its kind in Asia. Department vise festivals are also held -these include Radiance (Mechanical Engineering), Zephyr (Aerospace Engineering), AZeotropy (Chemical Engineering), Padarth(Metallurgy and Material Science Engineering), Aagomani (Electrical Engineering) and recently, Aakaar (Civil Engineering). The campus is also home to The Entrepreneurship Cell, which support the growth of startups across the globe. The institute also has an LGBT alliance club called “Saathi”.
