Indian Police Service
Indian Police Service is one of the three All India Services (AIS). The other two AIS are Indian Administrative Service (IAS) and Indian Forest Service (IFoS).
IPS officers provide leadership to staff of state police forces and Central Armed Police Forces like CISF, ITBP, BSF.
Recruitment
There are three modes of recruitment to IPS:
- Direct entry through Civil Service exam conducted by Union Public Service Commission (UPSC)
- Promotion of State Police Service officers
- Through Limited Competition Examination conducted by UPSC

Role of IPS officers
- Maintaining public peace and order, crime prevention, investigation and detection. Intelligence collection, VIP Security, Counter-terrorism, border policing are also some aspects of policing
- They lead men and women in Khaki in State Police Forces and Central Armed Police organisations (BSF, CISF, CRPF, SSB, ITBP, NSG)
- They also serve in Ministries of Central Government.
- As vigilance officers in public enterprises like PSUs, Air India among others
Promotions
IPS officers get promotions on the basis of Annual Performance Appraisal reports and vigilance clearance and scrutiny of overall record of the officer.
