The Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) in 2014, realized the need for a national ranking framework for all the institutes of higher education in the country. The 16-member committee established for this purpose identified a set of measurable parameters that could be used as metrics for ranking institutions. The National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) was created based on the suggestions of this core committee. The framework contains five parameters that capture the essential quality indicators which assimilate to form a quantitative rank for an institute. The parameters measure factors like resources, quality of research, stakeholder perception, outreach and inclusivity among other things.
Department of Management Studies, IIT Roorkee stood 8th in the 2017 NIRF Management institute rankings, out of 542 other participating institutes. The individual category that measures the quality of Research and Publications (RPC) saw DoMS, IIT Roorkee rise to the 2nd position. This was due to the immense importance given to trying out new things at the institute and merging an attitude of experimentation into the course curriculum. Ranking high in a category like Outreach and Inclusivity(OI) which measures the diversity and social aspects of an institute signals the diverse mix of students from various states and cultures of the country that are currently pursuing an MBA from here. The true test of an education imparted by any institute is the work done by its alumni once they graduate, this is aptly captured by the Graduation Outcomes (GO) parameter which takes into account start-ups by alumni, median salary and further work in academia. DoMS, IIT Roorkee performed extremely well due to the talented managers and entrepreneurs that constantly walk out of its gates each year. The combined performance of these metrics saw DoMS, IIT Roorkee break into the top 10 management institutes in the country.
