The need for salesmanship — from kindergarten to retirement — has made ‘talking’ the new breathing. Have you ever received advice about shutting up? I haven’t. Real, good ol’ shutting up. Not to be confused with listening skills, which is another topic.
Political heads of state, who’ve historically been sources of inspiration, make statements today where there’s no need for one. And end up as laughing stock.
A few months ago, someone suggested that I learn Spanish for better job opportunities. Here’s the best bit:
Quote: “Because they speak Spanish in all of South America. Well, except Mexico, where they speak Mexican. And of course North America is 50% Spanish! You should really learn the language.”
Wasn’t that a great addition to your general awareness? If only this person had known to shut up.
It’s certainly great to be an awesome talker. But there is no shame in shutting up either — the key is knowing when and where. If Gandhi were an audience at a physics conference, he would’ve known. If Buffett went to a cloud computing expo, he would know too.
