Most MBA and PGDM programs include a summer internship as an integral learning component. Summer internships are typically scheduled between the first and second year of classroom study. At most B-schools like TAPMI, the internship segment starts in the first week of April and is for two months.
Why Summer Internships are an Integral Part of the Curriculum
PGDM Summer internships provide management students with an opportunity to gain practical experience and exposure to practical business scenarios. Students can then:
- Relate to these real-world problems and apply classroom concepts to these problems
- Integrate their functional learning
- Use market research theories in business contexts
Most companies participate in the internship programs at B-schools since it allows them to get fresh insights or perspectives of stakeholders such as customers, channels and employees through the interns. They can study a problem or a new opportunity in detail while generating new ideas. Summer internships help companies to evaluate and implement internal or external processes/systems.
An internship takes students one step closer to their career destination. By working in an environment that presents a learning opportunity at every step, they develop the confidence to tackle business problems with the right frame of mind. It is an opportunity for them to learn how to apply classroom concepts to real problems.

Summer Internships and Skill Development
One of the key skills developed by students during summer internships is confidence. An internship exposes students to a new environment where they need to tackle actual business challenges without getting nervous. These internships help build the confidence of students and also prepare them for any job interviews they may take later. It is a learning curve that helps them approach their future career path well-prepared.
Summer internships are a chance for students to develop and hone their interpersonal skills and gain industry exposure and experience working in the corporate culture. An internship develops the right attitude needed to succeed in the corporate world.
Summer Internships are a Boost to the Career
The performance of students in the summer internship either translates to a pre-placement offer or helps them get a practical learning experience. This is beneficial for the companies giving the offer as they get to hire a talent they have already invested in. As for the students receiving the pre-placement offers, it gives them a chance to work with a company whose corporate culture they have already become familiar with.
An Opportunity That Also Comes with Challenges
While MBA summer internships offer invaluable experience, they also come with certain difficulties — both anticipated and unanticipated. Students may feel that the summer internship is not giving them any structured or meaningful insights into the work of the company as well as the industry. It is difficult to adjust to the sudden change of pace from handling case studies in the classroom to actual problem-solving in the real world.
However, with the right guidance and mentoring, students can overcome these challenges and benefit immensely from a summer internship. At TAPMI, students are assigned a faculty mentor to supervise and guide them during their summer internship. This helps the students make the most of their summer internship and use the learning to further their career dreams.
