Special Class Railway Apprentices Examination – Details of the test

In the previous article on Special Class Railway Apprentices (SCRA) Examination, we looked at the examination in brief. In this article, let us understand the scheme and syllabus of the examination in detail.

This examination has two parts:

Part I – Written Examination

Part II – Interview/Personality Test

The Written Examination comprises two papers, the details of which are as follows:

Paper I     General Ability Test                             2 hours          200 Marks

                (English, General Knowledge 

                and Psychological Test)  

Paper II    Physical Sciences (Physics                   2 hours          200 Marks

                and Chemistry)

Paper III   Mathematics                                        2 hours          200 Marks

The syllabus of these papers is as follows:

General Ability Test: The English section consists of questions like spot the error, synonyms, antonyms, comprehension passages, fill in the blanks, etc. The General Knowledge related questions are of standard XIIth or equivalent level and encompass a range of topics such as History, Polity, Society in India, Economy, Taxation, Indian social system, etc. The Psychological section questions are designed to test a candidate’s basic intelligence and mechanical aptitude.

Physical Sciences: This section can be sub-divided into Physics and Chemistry related questions. For Physics, the syllabus consists of Length measurements, measurements of time and mass, Newton’s law of motion, Newton’s law of Gravitation, Mass and Weight, Pascal’s law, Temperature and its measurements, Wave motion, Reflection and Refraction of light, etc. The Chemistry syllabus includes components of Physical Chemistry, Organic Chemistry and Inorganic Chemistry, such as Atomic Structure, Chemical bonding, energy changes in a chemical reaction, Solutions, Electro- chemistry, Hydrogen, Group I, II, III, IV, V, VI, VII elements, Tetrahedral nature of carbon, Hydroxy compounds, etc.

Mathematics: This paper includes components of Algebra, Trigonometry, Analytic Geometry, differential Calculus, vectors and its application, statistics and probability, etc.

Personality Test

The Personality test carries a maximum of 200 marks. Only those candidates who are declared qualified as per the results of the written examination shall be called for the personality test. In the personality test, special attention would be paid to assessing a candidate’s potential qualities of leadership, initiative, general interest, intellectual curiosity, tact and other social qualities, mental and physical energy, power of practical application and integrity of character.
