I realise how difficult it would have been for Shoojit Sircar to come up with the idea of ‘Vicky Donor’ for Indian public, given we Indian people have apprehensions talking about the word ‘Sex’ in public or in person too, leave apart a bold concept of SPERM DONATION. A major section of youth contributed to the success of movie on box office, but rarely do such miracles happen. It is quite a challenge to talk about any such issue with such a class that people do not get offended or feel it’s going over the top or crossing the line.
Even today when any news about Rape or sexual harassment comes over any news channel, parents feel uncomfortable watching the channel in front of their grownup children. The problem lies herein. How else can parents let their children know what these things actually are and what they can cause?
Another area of cynical doubtfulness is ‘Porn’. Again, as many people have pointed out earlier, parents want their children, the ones in their late teens, not to watch porn at all. Ever. Yet, they expect them to know all about sex and family planning after their marriage.
Coming over to the youth, there is still a major section of them which thinks it’s not okay to be open about one’s sexuality. It’s a taboo for a lesbian girl to say she’s lesbian, for a gay guy to say he’s gay. Trans-genders are in even worse situation. Anyone who supports such people is himself/herself labelled so. Media uses a mockery tone to describe such people. Students make fun such students around them. It will take time, I know, but it’s almost time now. Even the government has passed law permitting homosexuality in 2009. Yes, the sleepy government we blame for dragging issues, laws and permissions. And we still need time.
And finally when it comes to pre-marital sex, many eyes are bound to pop and hang out .Like you can literally stop a couple from doing it. The adult ones I am talking about. You need a paper and a couple of signatures to have sex. That sure sounds a bit ridiculous to me.
India has its own culture and ethics. But they sure do not come in way of being modern. The lamest thing people do is to take the name of culture and say that such things (talking openly about sex whenever required) do not imbibe Indian values. We have shame and respect as tools of our ethics. The answer to such people should be-“Indian values are way beyond such stereotypes. Clueless and less informed people like you need to get you head cleared and mentality broad minded.” Some may buy this stuff, some may not. But the ones hanging in between and making it difficult for others to accept are the ones called narrow minded. And they make the word INDIA sound narrow minded too!
