Q1. After 7+ years of experience in Analytics, what inspired you to Join academia, and how did this path of academia happen for you?

Ans: Right. So, speaking from my journey, I began my career with TCS’s data consultancy services. There, I took on various roles across different projects, both domestically and internationally, including stints in the US and UK. As a project manager and team lead, I closely collaborated with team members, sharing insights from my experiences and offering my functional and technical expertise. It was during this time that I developed a strong bond with my colleagues and discovered my passion for imparting knowledge. This realisation prompted me to transition into academia full-time.

Following my tenure at TCS, I delved into freelancing in analytics. Throughout this period, I maintained connections with directors and deans of various institutions in Delhi NCR. These connections proved instrumental as they extended invitations for me to conduct sessions for their students, ultimately paving my path into academia. I find great joy in academia, as I feel a deep connection with the youth of India, who embody the future of our nation. Contributing to their career growth and the nation’s future fills me with immense satisfaction. I view it as a significant responsibility to mentor and support the youth of India, making this journey incredibly fulfilling for me.

Q2: In your opinion, what are the top three latest trends in the business world that will significantly impact the demand for MBAs in the next 3 – 6 years?

Ans: When discussing recent trends, one thing that truly stands out to me is the rapid pace of technological advancements. It’s evident that digital transformation is sweeping across every domain and area of our lives. From the emergence of the fintech industry in finance to the impact of AR/VR in advertising and marketing, there’s a significant shift in working styles across operations, HR with HR Analytics, and more. This digital transformation has undeniably emerged as a prominent trend, and I believe it’s crucial for PGDM and MBA institutes to integrate this into their post-curriculum to educate graduates about industry trends. I’ve personally observed this change unfolding over the past few years, and it’s likely to continue, especially with the emergence of AI, generative AI, and other new technologies. It’s certainly one way to drive changes in the business landscape.

Another aspect that I find noteworthy is the increasing demand for hybrid professionals. While technical skills are undoubtedly important, I recognise the crucial role that non-technical aspects like soft skills and managerial capabilities play. Here, PGDM and MBA students showcase their managerial capabilities, enriching discussions around technical areas and effectively expressing their thoughts. This holistic approach to skill development contributes to meeting the requirements of hybrid professionals and shapes careers for PGDM graduates.

Moreover, I’ve observed a surge in startups numbers in India over the years, which has been further accelerated by the pandemic. Reports suggest that around 100,000 startups could emerge by 2025, with cities like Bangalore, Delhi, and Mumbai emerging as prominent startup hubs, offering numerous employment opportunities. Therefore, in PGDM institutes where entrepreneurship is emphasised in the curriculum, we play a crucial role in fostering this trend of startups and new ventures, contributing to the growth of businesses and the economy.

Q3: How is IBI ensuring that your students are prepared to navigate and thrive in the dynamic business landscape shaped by these emerging trends?

Ans: So, what we do at our business institute is maintain a curriculum that is highly relevant to technology and centred around industry needs. We continually adapt the curriculum design to meet the current demands of the industry, prioritising cloud computing, Python, and other tools and technologies, along with data visualisation, as integrated parts of our course structure. This approach ensures that our students stay technologically proficient and aligned with industry requirements.

In addition, we incorporate entrepreneurship courses into our curriculum. We actively encourage students with an entrepreneurial mindset to pursue their ideas further. We organise business plan workshops and competitions, where students receive guidance on developing and presenting their business plans. Those who excel in these competitions have the opportunity to showcase their plans at national-level events, such as those hosted at IIM Bangalore and IIM Kolkata. This exposure is invaluable in helping students learn how to effectively present themselves and their ideas.

When it comes to soft skills, we provide numerous sessions for students to enhance their personality and communication skills. Personality development and professional communication are areas of extensive focus for us, as we recognise their importance for success in the professional realm. Additionally, we offer certification programmes aligned with industry needs, covering topics such as cybersecurity, behavioural finance, HR analytics, marketing analytics, and digital marketing. These programmes are integrated into our curriculum or offered as non-credit courses, ensuring that our students remain relevant to the ever-evolving industry landscape.

Q4: When discussing the MBA curriculum, the conversation often revolves around the impact of industry influence and students’ exposure to the real business world. In this regard, how is IBI ensuring the creation of skill experts ready to seamlessly transition into the industry upon completing their degree?

Ans: This is something that we, as faculty members, undertake. Initially, there’s extensive discussion and brainstorming about how we can structure the pedagogy to ensure that students receive all necessary elements within the programme. Achieving effectiveness and efficiency requires considerable effort. We continuously refine the pedagogy to prioritise practical orientation. This involves integrating more case studies and tools like Excel into our curriculum, as they are widely utilised across various industries and domains.

We recognise the rapid evolution of data analysis and therefore emphasise its significance in our courses. We engage in discussions to seamlessly incorporate it into the curriculum. Moreover, certain topics, such as cybersecurity and behavioural finance, are deemed essential for student understanding. While they may not directly align with the core curriculum, we offer them as non-credit courses or certification programmes. It’s crucial for students to grasp ethical considerations in technology and business, as well as the associated risks. Consequently, we ensure these topics are addressed alongside the core curriculum.

Q5: Can you provide insights into the recent programmes or initiatives undertaken by IBI in the past two years to enhance the competitive advantage among students, particularly in the realms of technology, innovation, and sustainability?

Ans: In the last two years, IBI has launched numerous programmes and initiatives aimed at ensuring our students maintain a competitive edge, particularly in the areas of technology, innovation, and sustainability. A notable initiative is our “Tech-Innovate-Sustain” campaign, which integrates state-of-the-art technology, fosters innovation, and advocates sustainability across various academic disciplines. Through this initiative, we’ve introduced specialised courses, workshops, and seminars focusing on emerging technologies like artificial intelligence, blockchain, and data analytics. These courses not only provide students with practical skills but also encourage them to explore innovative solutions to real-world challenges.

Furthermore, we’ve partnered with industry collaborators and research institutions to offer hands-on experiences and exposure to the latest technological advancements and sustainable practices. For example, we’ve organised industry visits, guest lectures, and hackathons where students interact with industry professionals, learn about best practices, and engage in real-world projects.

In addition, IBI has revamped its curriculum to embed sustainability principles across all programmes. We’ve introduced courses on sustainable business practices, corporate social responsibility, and environmental management to cultivate a mindset of sustainability among our students. Moreover, we’ve initiated campus-wide programmes promoting eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction campaigns, renewable energy projects, and sustainable transportation alternatives.

Overall, these programmes and initiatives underscore our dedication to equipping our students with the necessary skills, knowledge, and mindset to excel in an ever-changing global landscape while making meaningful contributions to society and the environment.

Q6. When a student considers an MBA or PGDM, one of the most important factors is the placement opportunities that come with it. How is IBI ensuring that you get the best possible placement options for your students?

Ans: Undoubtedly, comprehending the intricacies of the placement process holds paramount importance for all PGDM and MBA aspirants. At IBI, we prioritise providing quality placement opportunities and ensuring our students are thoroughly equipped to seize any opportunity that comes their way. From the moment a student joins us, we embark on profiling them. Each student is paired with a faculty mentor responsible for conducting a comprehensive skillset mapping.

The placement process significantly influences a student’s decision-making journey regarding their choice of college. Here at IBI, we commence profiling students right from the outset. They undergo a meticulous 50-day orientation programme before embarking on the trimester system of courses. Throughout this period, faculty mentors collaborate closely with students to identify their strengths and areas for improvement, bolstering the former and addressing the latter. This profiling process aids students in making informed decisions regarding their specialisation, a decision that often poses challenges. To aid students in aligning themselves with industry requirements, we conduct grooming sessions encompassing professional etiquette and organise mock group discussions, interviews, and aptitude tests. We aim to ensure students are thoroughly prepared before placement opportunities arise.

When it comes to placements, our objective is to secure the most favourable job roles from top industry players for each student. We maintain close partnerships with approximately 180 companies, understanding their needs and acquiring job descriptions (JDs) for our students. During pre-placement talks, industry representatives provide valuable insights into their work and available roles. Students nominate themselves for JDs they find intriguing, and a rigorous selection process ensues, comprising aptitude tests, group discussions, and interviews. We take pride in our track record of achieving a 100% placement rate for many students, with some even receiving multiple offers. We encourage students to pursue roles that genuinely resonate with them, even if they’ve already secured a placement, ensuring they find the ideal fit for their career aspirations.

In summary, our placement process is robust, with diverse companies offering promising opportunities. In the current academic year alone, we’ve welcomed approximately 180 companies, extending placements across various profiles.

Q7: What specific skills do you think current students lack, and how could having these skills benefit them? As student mediators, we’ve noticed a decline in curiosity among students to ask questions, likely due to the convenience of accessing information online. What are your thoughts on this trend?

Ans: That’s a very intriguing question. Regarding students as you mentioned, they often possess a wealth of knowledge. However, this abundance of knowledge also brings about a dilemma – the uncertainty about where to direct their efforts. While they may excel in multiple areas, without a clear focus, they may not attain their desired outcomes. This principle applies when analysing students’ strengths. We advocate for them to capitalise on their strengths rather than solely concentrating on their weaknesses. While addressing weaknesses is important, it’s equally crucial to excel in areas of strength. This leads to a sense of fulfilment and satisfaction in life.

Furthermore, it’s essential for students to effectively communicate their knowledge and ideas. This is why, at IBI, we prioritise communication skills. We’ve implemented changes to the curriculum, incorporating business communication courses in all three trimesters of the first year. We’ve noticed that communication plays a pivotal role in how students are perceived and how effectively they can articulate themselves. Therefore, we focus on enhancing both oral and written communication skills. By doing so, we ensure that students are well-equipped to confidently convey their thoughts and ideas.

Q8. In your view, what are the key strengths and unique selling points that can put IBI on the global map and gain recognition as a destination for MBAs?

Ans: From my perspective, what distinguishes IBI as a top destination for MBAs is a blend of compelling factors. Firstly, envision a faculty comprised of esteemed figures in the business domain, imparting their vast knowledge and industry insights to students. It’s akin to gaining exclusive access to the inner workings of the business world’s most coveted secrets. However, the allure doesn’t end there. At IBI, education transcends traditional textbooks and lectures. It’s a dynamic journey where classroom theories intersect with real-world scenarios, facilitated by our hands-on approach and industry partnerships. Picture immersing yourself in business challenges, equipped with the knowledge and bolstered by experienced professionals.

Furthermore, innovation and entrepreneurship are ingrained in the very essence of IBI. From nurturing disruptive ideas to offering the necessary tools and support to bring them to fruition, our institution empowers students to think boldly and act decisively. Yet, what truly sets IBI apart is its global perspective. Envision yourself mingling with peers from diverse corners of the globe, exchanging ideas, and immersing yourself in varied cultures. It’s not merely about obtaining a degree; it’s about cultivating a global mindset imperative for success in today’s interconnected world.

In essence, IBI transcends being merely a venue to pursue an MBA – it serves as a launchpad for aspiring business leaders, a melting pot of innovative ideas, and a gateway to boundless global opportunities. Therefore, if you’re prepared to embark on an exhilarating journey where learning knows no bounds, then IBI is your rightful destination.

Q9. In the ongoing debate about AI versus humans, do you consider AI to be a collaborator or a competitor for MBAs in today’s world?

Ans: Absolutely fascinating question! It’s not just our students who ponder this; it’s a question that resonates across the education sphere. With the rise of AI and its potential impact on job markets, the looming question arises: competitor or collaborator? Will it displace our jobs, or will it complement our efforts in the workforce? The crucial approach here is to embrace AI as a collaborator. Despite some viewing it as a threat, we must shift the narrative and perceive it as an opportunity. It’s all about staying ahead in the technological landscape. Proficiency in AI technology is paramount. Envision mastering this technological marvel!

This is where we ensure AI becomes our trusted ally rather than a rival. While AI can manage routine tasks, let’s not overlook the power of human decision-making and creativity. That’s our trump card. Ethical considerations, emotional intelligence, and the ability to forge personal connections—these are the qualities that distinguish us. AI simply cannot replicate the human touch. Let’s shape a future where humans and AI collaborate, where innovation flourishes, and where we lead the way. Let’s transform this collaboration from mere potential to reality, ensuring that education remains at the forefront of advancement.

Q10. In your view, what are the top five factors students should consider when applying to or selecting a B school?

Ans: So, definitely, that conclusion is among the aspirations of students. There are a few areas they should definitely consider. Firstly, they should look into the accreditation process of the institute they are interested in. Is it AICTE approved? Is it approved by the Ministry of Education, Government of India? What kind of reputation does it have in terms of faculty and alumni network? These aspects are crucial.

Secondly, they should inquire about the curriculum. Is it industry-centric? Does it align with the latest trends? Technology integration within the course curriculum is also essential.

Thirdly, they should investigate the certifications provided. Does the institute offer a global perspective? Are there any collaborations with universities abroad for research opportunities?

Moreover, they should assess the placement process. How are internships and job roles provided? Which companies visit for placements? Are there networking opportunities with HR professionals from various industries? Additionally, they should consider industry interventions in the institute. Are there corporate sessions and guest speakers from industry leaders? Do students have opportunities to connect with professionals from the industry before joining?

Q11. In light of India’s significant emphasis on education in recent government budgets, with notable allocations aimed at bolstering institutions such as IIMs, IITs, and the broader education sector, what do you believe are the primary factors contributing to India’s emergence as a leading destination for MBA programmes?

Ans: There’s a significant focus on the education industry, and I believe the expertise of faculty and industry professionals in various institutes plays a crucial role. We have a large rural youth population who have great potential to contribute significantly to the job market if provided with proper education and training. This is something that needs to be addressed, as it presents a substantial advantage for India’s youth. Many Indian people possess knowledge and potential, but they lack exposure to opportunities. PGDM institutes can play a vital role in bridging this gap and providing them with the necessary exposure and skills.

Another aspect is India’s recent focus on education, particularly in enhancing institutions like IIMs and IITs, which signals its potential as a prime destination for MBA programmes. The robust economic growth and thriving corporate landscape provide ample opportunities for MBA graduates. Additionally, India’s emphasis on skill development and entrepreneurship aligns well with MBA principles, fostering innovation and leadership. The country’s cultural diversity and heritage create a vibrant learning environment, attracting students globally. With collaborations between Indian and global universities on the rise, India offers top-notch faculty, resources, and networks for MBA education. Overall, India’s commitment to education, coupled with its dynamic business environment and global influence, makes it an ideal choice for transformative MBA experiences and professional growth.

Q12. In 10 words or less, describe an MBA degree in today’s world.

Ans: MBA is basically – a capacity building programme which develops enhances the leadership abilities and knowledge.

When asked about her definition of success, both in personal and professional growth, Dr. Sachi emphasises that success is a highly subjective concept, varying from person to person based on their individual perspectives. For her, success boils down to a feeling of contentment and satisfaction at the end of the day.

“It’s about whether I’m achieving what I set out to do and making a positive impact on others’ lives. If I can contribute in the ways I’ve envisioned and bring about positive change, that’s where I find my success.”

However, she acknowledges that success means different things to different people. It could involve reaching career or personal goals, experiencing financial stability, or simply being able to provide for one’s family. Achieving these milestones brings a sense of fulfillment to many.

“Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is another crucial aspect of success. While some may prioritise their professional pursuits, others strive to find harmony between their personal and work lives. Ultimately, success lies in finding that balance and giving equal importance to both aspects of life. For me personally, success is synonymous with contentment and satisfaction. It’s about feeling fulfilled and making a positive impact, rather than just achieving external markers of success.”
