Prof Ujjwal K. Chowdhury – Amity Mumbai, talking about Convergence in Media & Design Education

You have a significant experience in setting up campuses for the Symbiosis
group & running them successfully over the years. How do you foresee your
current responsibilities at Amity to be different in comparison?

Amity
is India’s largest educational group and is creating its newest campus in
Mumbai with a lush green 70 acres land at Panvel, and in the city which is
virtually the capital of Indian media and entertainment which has a total size
of 1.2 lacs crores revenue. Creating a media and design faculty in Mumbai Amity
from the scratch, the Mecca of Indian entertainment and style, will be an
interesting challenge. And, having this faculty along with management, law and
engineering will surely give a more holistic inter-disciplinary environment for
this work.

 2. What are your top 3 priorities that you
intend to implement for Amity Mumbai over the next two years?

Good
infra-structure of media and design which can finally cater to the practical
work needs of a thousand students, beginning with 200 now. Second, having half
a dozen of motivated focused experienced faculty members (some are already
here) and at least two dozens of top industry stalwarts as guests and visiting
faculty. Third, every course to run in full capacity within two years, with a
huge range of practical work (in advertising, journalism, films &
television, radio, PR and events, in case of media; fashion, photography,
animation, interior design in case of design).

Convergent media education has been a theme very close to your heart. What are
your views on this & how do you foresee the extension of this in an
ecosystem like Amity?

Yes,
convergence can be better practiced in an eco-system as that of Amity where
management, law and engineering are also studies on same campus as media and
design. There are many relevant business, technological and legal aspects of
media and design domains too. Secondly, large green campus with a good number
of students in hostel helps in experimenting and doing things which is crucial
in media and design domains. Thirdly, from a broad base of creativity with
business acumen and technological skills, moving on to a niche area of media
and design is possible much better in an environment as that of Amity.

It is an established fact that the MBA education scenario is plagued with the
skewed Demand-Supply balance. What according to you are the three things an MBA
aspirant of today should keep in mind before applying to a management education
program? What kind of innovative careers would you like to see evolving from
this campus over the next 3-4 years, given its proximity to the commercial
capital of the country?

With
regards to management education, my strong belief is that we are definitely
moving towards a new era of specialized media education (like retail
management, energy management, operations management, brand management, etc) as
opposed to the more generic four categories (like, finance, marketing, HT and
system). Also, management education will have more elements of CSR, corporate
governance, case-study and project-solving approach. Inter-disciplinary
approach will bring in fresh perspectives in business education ahead.
