On Friday, 4470 additional seats are sanction by the union ministry across the country for government medical colleges. This additional sanction of the seta is to cater 10% EWS quota in the open category. Union ministry of health and family welfare approved 970 more seats to the government and civil medical colleges of Maharashtra state. Medical education minister also committed to allot 700 more seats to the privately-run medical colleges in couple of days.
State minister stated that the proposal will be cleared by the centre in next week and once it is approved state will be ready to sanction 600-700 more seats to the privately- run medical colleges.
As per the source, there are 11 private colleges with an intake capacity of 1850 students.As per the sources, this increase in the number of seats allocation in medical colleges is to balance the quota in the open category. As introduction of EWS category should be catered. Currently there are 78% quota including newly introduced 10% for EWS category. There is an additional quota for SEBC as well which is 16%.
