The Karnataka High Court on June 11 disposed the public interest litigation seeking cancellation of the controversial computer-based Common Admissions Test (CAT) 2009 exam held in November and December 2009, while directing the Indian Institutes of Management (IIMs) at Bangalore and Ahmedabad to ensure that the errors were not repeated again.
A Bangalore division bench consisting of VG Sabhahit and AS Bopanna asked the IIMs to accept a representation detailing the errors in the execution of CAT 2009 from the petitioner Harsha Shettigar and decide within two months what it plans to do in order to rectify them in the future.
In the petition, Shettigar had asked for cancellation of the blunder-stricken computer-based CAT 2009 and a demand for a retest in the paper-pencil format. Conducted by US-based testing company Prometric with NIIT as ground partner on behalf of the IIMs, the exam suffered computer virus attacks, mismanagement and delays at several centers across the country, leading the IIMs to offer a retest for a select few in February 2010.
