JoSAA 2017: 5,915 seats vacant at IITs, IIITs, NITs, GFTIs after round six

Admission process for IITs, NITs, IIITs, GFTIs

The Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2017 released the list of seats vacant across all participating institutes after round six. Seat allocation is done on the basis of AIR (All India Rank) in JEE (Joint Entrance Examination) Main, and Advanced. Approximately 460 seats are vacant at the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs), and 5,400 seats at the Indian Institutes of Information Technology (IIITs), National Institutes of Technology (NITs) and Government Funded Technical Institutes (GFTIs). JoSAA is set-up by the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) to manage and regulate joint seat allocation for admissions to various IITs, IIITs, NITs, and GFTIs.

PaGaLGuY spoke to Ex-Chairman, JEE Advanced 2016, Prof KV Krishna from IIT Guwahati, about the huge number of vacant seats after round 6. “It is because JoSAA gave students an option to withdraw from allocated seat till round six. I think IIT seats should be filled by round seven. About IIITs, NITs, I think the Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) 2017 is planning to conduct special rounds after round seven to fill vacant seats across those institutes.”
