A total of 156 seats remain vacant in the National Institute Technology (NITs) after the third round of seat allocation process conducted by Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA) 2016. The majority of vacant seats are from the NITs across the North Eastern states of Nagaland, Mizoram, Sikkim, and Agartala.
“We have proposed to the concerned officials of the Union Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD), to amend the admission process in order to fill the vacant seats of the NITs. If amended, the vacant seats will be filled during the sixth round of seat allocation,” said Asok De, Chairman, Central Seat Allocation Board (CSAB) 2016.
Half of all these seats at each NIT come under a ‘home state quota’ and are filled according to the reservation policy of the state where the institute is located. The remaining half come under the national quota and are filled in keeping with the national reservation policy of 15 per cent for the Scheduled Castes, 7.5 per cent for the Scheduled Tribes and 27 per cent for the Other Backward Classes
The decision to amend the current admission process is yet to be affirmed by the MHRD. If confirmed, these vacant seats will be allotted only to the students domiciled in the North Eastern states of India, and will not be allotted to students from other states”, said Asok De.
After last year’s seat allocation process, around 192 seats had remained vacant in NITs across the nation.
