JEE which stands for Joint Entrance Examination is a competitive exam which can get you into top Engineering colleges in India. This exam is targeted towards the candidates who aspire to build a career through engineering and wish to get into one of the top colleges for engineering in India which are IITs and NITs. It is mandatory to clear JEE exams if one wishes to get into one of the above-mentioned colleges. Upon clearing this exam, you will be able to pave your ways into IIT, NIT or any other government-funded engineering colleges.
History
JEE was previously called AIEEE or in other words, All India Engineering Entrance Exam. This examination has been, from initial days, composed by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in India and has been introduced in the year 2002. This examination came into existence to help students compete in national level for entrance into various under graduation as well as design courses based on the AIEEE scores. There are a total of 31 National Institute of Technology (NIT) and 23 Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) which accept the score of JEE and provide admission based on the same.
Number of papers
The numbers of papers which follow in the examination are TWO. The first paper is for the candidates seeking admission in B.E. or B.Tech. The second paper is however for the candidate who wishes to be admitted in B.Arch courses. There are no terms and conditions related to being able to attempt only one paper. You can either write one paper based on the course you seek or you may write both the papers.
The form of writing the examination is OMR based as well as PC based mode. However, since this year i.e. 2019, there are no alternatives provided anymore and it is solely PC based test also called online mode. Exam pattern
There are various sections provided in the paper which have to be answered by the candidate and are going to be in the form of multiple choice questions. Through the process of Normalisation, JEE evaluates the final score from all the provided sections and contrasts competitive scores crosswise. This pattern is just like any other pattern which is generally followed by entrance exams of every other field. To sort out the deserving candidates, NTA will do so by deriving a percentile from the hereby normalisation process. This normalisation is a vast process and can be understood well by hitting various search engines.
Percentile scores are derived from the overall performance of each of the candidate who happens to appear and answer the exam. The final percentile hence derived from the entire performance is set to range somewhere from 100 to 0 for every session. It is essential to note that there is even negative marking for the wrong questions you attempt.

Cut off
There is a JEE Main cut off which states the required score which has to be scored by a candidate which would help him/her qualify for the NITs. This score also acts as a qualifying criterion to be able to answer the JEE Advance exam which would grant you admission in IITs. Every year the number of students appearing the examination ranges somewhere between 14-15 lakhs while only a number of 2,24,000 students are finally selected. Other information
This year the first JEE main Exam was held on 8th, 9th and 10th of January and was directed by NTA. The examination on all the days was held as two shifts over 258 urban areas nationwide and abroad. The scores for the same were released on 19th January 2019, which was, to be precise 12 days ahead of the scheduled date of the results announcement.

The application process for the next JEE (Main) examination will start by 8th February 2019 and will last until 7th March 2019 (1 month).
