“‘Depressed’ Indian IT worker quits for being paid too high a salary!
An Indian computer programmer left his job after complaining to his bosses that he was getting a very high salary.
According to psychologists, the feeling of guilt is a growing problem in India where there is a huge disparity in wealth.”
I came across this news last week and started thinking about the lives of software engineers i know, viz. my colleagues and college friends which resulted in following reasoning.
Are Software engineers paid too much high??
May be or may be not but they are definitely paid more than their peers in other sectors. Though, few public sector organisations and engineering firms are trying hard to bridge this gap but they still are far ahead than most of the other sectors. For suppose a fresh under graduate engineer in IT was paid 3-10 lpa annually where as a similar dental doctor was paid only 1.6-2 lpa, a pharma guy 1-1.2 lpa and the commerce, arts or B.sc guys were paid even less. This gap is creating a social and economic inequality in the society and also an inflated world for the IT professionals.
The life of these IT people changes dramatically after joining in an organisation. Now that they are earning good amount of money, their life style changes like an exponential curve. For a few, it ll get into their heads so much so that they more or less start behaving like spoil brats and feels themselves as the uber cool creatures on mother earth. Most of them become victims of the marketing strategies played by rich companies and their MBA grads. Thanks to the corporate banks for providing them the flashy credit cards with tempting offers like EMI and reward points etc, which resulted in higher spending power than their current income levels. They start buying only those branded clothes which suits their income levels and they make a blind eye to the fact that they are nearly spending double its worth just because of that brand’s label is on it.The electronic revolution by Samsung like companies made people buy different kinds of smart gadgets, which differ in size with similar functionality, repeatedly, with a life span less than that of their synthetic pouches. The alcoholic and food consumption confines to luxurious places with the so called “great ambiance” for some of them, again a marketing play by corporate giants.
